Hey guys I'm going to start university next year and I'm gonna need a laptop for school. I don't need it for games but if it could play WoW on medium settings that would be a huge plus. I have a part-time job and I make $600 a month. I'm down for macs but they are expensive. Never had one before tho so I'd be a huge noob with the OS. Thoughts?

Btw im in canada so if ur gonna link stuff keep that in mind.

You can't go wrong with one of the latest 13 inch macbook pros. Trust me, it takes like two days tops to get used to the interface and operating system. It's really not that different from windows.

Yea dude they look great. Lotta money but I'm down to save. I already have $500 saved up.

Yeah I'm looking for one as well, just a cheapo though as I've got my desktop for gaming. Just need it for documents and internet really.

Go with a Macbook if you want a cheaper model maybe wait a couple of months and get the updated Macbook air or the 13" pro

Apple does give student discounts. Go to the education store on the left hand side of the page.

I'd wait for the upgrade Macbook Air to come out and decide on whether you like 11" or 13". I'd go with the 11" if you'll be taking it around. 13" if you won't.

You could order the Macbook(white)
from Amazon for $930 no tax

For the basic Macbook? That sounds like the pro. You should get $100 off for a student discount.

Macbook Pro. You get a student discount, a free iPod, a free printer, and Macs hold their value better than just about anything. Just check out their resale values on eBay or CL if you don't believe me.

Hmmm when is it supposed to come out? Also yea it's going to go everywhere with me. Is 13" really that big and clunky? I want a laptop by at least september.

Yeah really, you can basically sell your mac every year and get nearly all the money to buy a new one.

It doesn't come with a free iPod anymore.

LoL @ "WoW on Medium" on a 13" MBP. I am typing this message on a 13" Sandy Bridge i5 MBP right now and if the OP is planning on gaming at all, this isn't the laptop to buy based on the cost.

It's the typical answer but I say go for a macbook. They are expensive but worth it in my opinion. The current 13" pros should be fine with Wow.

Well WoW doesn't have a medium setting...but it's just fine on "Fair" on a 13" MBP.

Is the 1000 dollar 13 inch Macbook Pro good enough for normal things? I'm required to have a mac for the school I'm transferring to this fall so I'm looking at my options.

are you bringing into lectures? battery life? what other games you might play? what software do you generally use? ask those questions first will give a better idea on what you looking for.;

windows 7 or mac Osx are both good and sturdy.

It's the best/most bang for your buck Mac you will find. No one I've ever talked to has had a problem with it. In fact, I don't know why you'd buy anything other than a Macbook Air if you're going the Mac route.

For all of my life up until last September I always had a PC. When I started using Mac all the little nuances and WTF moments that you get with a PC where gone. Do yourself a favor and get the Mac. I still have to use PC for work and absolutely loathe it.

MBPs are still overpriced. Definitely worth a premium but not the value something like an iMac is.

13" isn't that big and clunky. It's probably the ideal size for many. I'm more of an 11" guy because I prefer a small footprint. Check both out yourself at an Apple store.

Because a Pro may be better suited. As it stands I couldn't stand having an Air. Not even with upcoming sandybridge. I need a larger HDD size without tt costing me a lot of extra money, I also use my optical and firewire. Thunderbolt isn't really viable yet and I don't want to have to carry around external HDD's for storage.

Also I prefer the design of the Pro over the air.

Unless the 13inch has 256GB standard, 4GB of RAM also then I'd have to upgrade and that would cost $$.

i noticed how a lot of people on here said the macbook keeps it values well and you can basically get a new one every year. so my question is, where do you sell it beside ebay and craiglist? i tried to look up ebay but it seems a lot of hassle with the buyers getting the short end of the stick while craiglist is pretty scary when ur dealing with a $1000 dollars with a stranger in a public place.

I am definitely in the eating crow camp . Been PC(work and home) for my entire life. Been using a Macbook Pro for two weeks now and its amazing.

Bought a 2009 27inch iMac last Feb.
i7 2.8 GHz Quadcore
8GB 1066Ram
1TB HDD
512MB Graphics

Sold it on eBay 3 weeks ago. For 250$ extra bought the 2011 27inch iMac. (2 Gen upgrade, 2009-2010-2011)
i7 Quad Sandybridge 3.4Ghz
8GB 1333 Mhz RAM
2TB HDD
2GB Graphics

I figure if I do this every year, or every other year I'll always be up to date and spend the equivalent of a new machine over the same 6 year period I would normally wait to upgrade to a new machine, without ever falling behind. iPhones and iPads work the same. Sell your iPhone for 300-400 and basically pay just the upgrade price.

Sold my iPad for 100$ less than the new one cost me this year also.

eBay :)

I just got a soy vaio sa for school. I haven't received it yet, but it seems very nice. The best part is that the battery is 7.5 hours and it's only 3.8 lbs. Also, with the battery slice attachment thing the battery goes to 15 hours!

If you want I could tell you how I like it after I get it in a couple of days.

Wait out as long as possible, ie aug or sept, then see what's out there. Personally I'd go for the new MacBook airs, which are widely expected to launch with lion next month.

-Have a good standing account with eBay.
-Have applecare.
-Require insurance & minimum buying price
-Add photos and videos of the machine on and working which look nice and appealing, not crappy photos that are in messy rooms and have bad reflections ect.
-Make the listings look professional
-Get back to peoples questions ASAP

+1 from me. Or a Sony Vaio (sorry can't recommend a certain model). Also almost forgot but I hear Asus laptops are really good.

Regardless, you make a thread about laptops in Neogaf and you will 100 replies with Macbooks. Hell even if you say I DONT WANT A MACBOOK people will still try to shove it down your throat.

Hasn't really done anything about the siege mentality, though.
