I'm at work in Japan and my fellow teacher is planning a trip to LA in the summer. She wants me to recommend her hotels in LA (she'll have a rental car) for her and her family. Criteria is that she's looking at $100 or less a night for 1 room and she'd like to be somewhere safe because she has little kids with her.

She's also looking for recommendations of things to take her kids to do around LA. I'm thinking of the Aquarium that's either at Laguna beach of Long Beach (haven't been there in 10+ years so I don't remember the location; I'm from OC). So any recommendations here would be great too.

Thanks,

Avoid downtown LA at ALL costs. Their best bet would be to find a nice hotel maybe in Studio City or Universal City, perhaps even Canoga Park (which is about 20 miles away from downtown shit-hole LA, but still pretty close to all of the good stuff).

Downtown isn't nearly as bad as it used to be since they've started bringing events, stylish lofts, and all the activity on broadway.

That being said, there probably isn't that much for a family to do down there yet. I'd go with Santa Monica, it will be cheaper than Beverly Hills/Malibu and it's still a really trendy area with lots of restaurants/shops/actitivies plus it's right on the beach.

There is nowhere safe in LA.... NOWHERE!!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA~

Southbay (Redondo Beach vicinity) ain't too bad, and it's halfway between downtown LA and Orange County. Or they could try Pasadena, which also can be nice, and not too far from downtown LA.
