Need opinions about a MacBook I just bought

I was wanting the new M1 Mini or Air but came across a killer deal on a 2019 MacBook Pro so I bought it. It will be a basic general use computer but I would like to occasionally edit Mavic 2 video and video/pics from my phone and Canon 6dmkii. The MacBook is the base model with a quad core i5 and 8 gigs ram, if it is capable of casual use 4k video editing I will keep it, if not ill sell it and get the M1 Mini or Air. I only paid 500 for it and it only had 39 cycles on the battery, so I don't think I would have any trouble getting my money back if I wanted to

I'm using the same machine, purchased Oct 2019, and with the T2 chip is still leaps and bound faster at rendering h265 videos than most newer laptops. Also, you can fire up bootcamp and have Windows at hand for those obscure .exe programs from time to time, which M1 can't do even with Parallels atm.

EDIT: Also, battery life's still strong after almost 2 years, it lasts me all day for simple internet browsing, even longer when streaming Netflix (with Safari), also you can hook up more than one external monitors which, again, M1 are not able to do for the time being.

I have a 2019 MacBook Pro 16" w/ 1TB ssd, i9, 16gb ram. I would trade it in for an M1 chip if I could get a decent deal on it. I don't render video though.

The m1 chip legit?
VERY legit. I had a spec’d out 2019 16” MacBook Pro and just switched Jobs and got a 13” m1. I’m a commercial video producer and LOVE this thing. 4K editing in premier (the newest update to support m1’s natively) feels MORE fluid, less dropped frames, and the fan barely ever turns on, and the machine stays cool to the touch the whole time. Only issue I’ve had with it is it requires a little tinkering to get dual external 4K/60 screens working right, but a fix is coming for that.

Seriously the Intel machine was a fricken heating element on my lap, it was worth the upgrade just for that. The loss of boot camp is fine to me as I have a 5950x/3090 gaming PC that I Remote Desktop into for any pc needs.

The 16” Pro M1 is going to be nuts. I wish I could have waited for it, but sadly had to get the laptop immediately.

$500 for that is a REALLY good deal, OP. It’s got the bad butterfly keyboard, but they’ll replace that for free up to 4 years from the original purchase, so you should be Golden.

I would sell it if you like it or want to get into Apple. The M1 seems like a good deal if you can swing it.
I don't ever think its a good idea to get a base model Apple. EG 8GB of RAM models.

I bought the 2018 MBA with 16GB of RAM and 500GB hard drive and its great even now.

When you buy Apple you are getting a great screen and quality hardware (albeit the keyboard is sketchy on my model and yours)

I'd say if you really like it it may be worth it to get the Mac Mini or Air. If you are happy with it and it meets your needs you aren't going to find anything comparable for that price. You just can't find the quality screen and hardware in a laptop.

It is a good deal but It sucks when you can't upgrade RAM. Everything else there are work arounds but can never get that RAM back.

The girl sold me this hyperdrive usb c dongle for another $20, that is something I would definitely need if I keep this. Looks.like it would break the ports of the ends or the dongle easily if you bump against something, insane that the "Pro" doesn't have but the most basic and fee ports

Interesting replies here. I was considering upgrading my 2017 macbook pro to an M1 system in the not too distant future. I didn't realise you couldn't attach it to an external monitor presently. Seems like a pretty big oversight on Apple's part, that. Especially considering people mainly use these machines for creative purposes.

If you got that for $500, that's a good deal. I just run macOS in my VM. Bummer you can't upgrade the RAM, still a decent machine.

Apple laptops get replaced every year 2022 will be better than this years. I wouldn’t trust laptops they’re nice but are overpriced, who the hell are they for? Are you willing to find a desktop computer lab? Think about anytime you need a laptop and if there’s a tablet or pc present. This is coming from someone who made the mistake of buying an Alienware 15 R3.

Are you serious , ”who the hell are they for “ ? That has to be the dumbest question I've seen in a while, and then you wonder why people think your a bot.
Every laptop gets updated yearly, just like every desktop ...duh.
Just because your clueless with laptops doesn’t mean they all suck like your shitty ass AW, and that was your first mistake you got fooled by the lame ass bling/RGB lighting and didn't research on performance and thermal throttling that R3’s AW are prone too.

OP I would of just bought the M1 powered Air , it would blow away you i5 model and have better resale value down the road.

I listed this on Facebook for 850 or would trade for an M1 mini or Air and already have a guy wanting to buy at my price so I might just go ahead and sell it and get the m1 Mini because I would like to be able to use a monitor. If I could hook the Air to a monitor I would rather have that since it is portable

Yes you can connect the M1 Air to a external monitor if you have a USB adapter

For photoshop i need the 16". Is there any news when M1 16" are being released?
Macs tend to get new releases in spring or summer lately. It's rumored that Apple's got an announcement event coming up in April, and they might announce a few new machines then, but I dunno if the 16" MBP is on the menu. If not, then they'll announce them at this summer's WWDC. The new machines will probably use a newer and faster M1X or M2 chip.

The 2019 13“ Pro has the obsolete butterfly keyboard mechanism which is prone to breaking and has a 4 year warranty program provided by Apple, which starts on the day of the original purchase of the device.

So if the person bought it in 2019, your warranty goes boom in 2023.

That‘s why you get anything pre-2020 thrown at you for cheap, cause they‘re devices with an expiration date set by hardware design choices.

It is an objectively good piece of hardware that performs well in benchmarks.

As a potential buyer, the main things left to consider are if you think the price/performance MSRP is justified, and if you like or dislike the Apple hardware ecosystem.

M1 is the way to go.

the Air M1 is an insane machine. will also be getting myself an M1X iMac whenever they come out.

wouldn’t be touching any Intel Apple machine knowing they gonna be abandoned.

When you use a different docking station or adapter does the macbook have to be opened and can you use a mouse and keyboard?
