According to sources, billions of people live in New York City, and another 398 million move in every day. But we know so little of our beloved town, even when we claim to be true New Yorkers. This is the first of a series of surveys I want to run for New Yorcheans to help their neighbors and vice-versa in discovering more of the city.
Ideally, you can try one new location per week, which should be a tiny percentage of the choices available if we get good participation, and still get something out of the experience.
So this week we'll start with the simple stuff: food. Follow the format, but please feel free to add a couple of bonus choices that don't fit it:
1. Favorite Chinese food
Joe's Shanghai
136-21 37th Ave. (off Main St.)
Flushing, NY 11354
718-539-3838
comments: Do what everyone else does and start with the steamed buns, their specialty. They have 2 other locations, both in Manhattan. I've only tried the midtown one and found it (much) pricier but (slightly) less delicious. This location only accepts cash.
2. Favorite non-chain burger place
not enough experience to tell you, but I enjoy that
"Great American Burger" place on
6th Ave. and 32nd St., right near the Mid-Manhattan Mall
3. Favorite authentic Mexican food
again, not enough experience; enlighten me!
4. Favorite seafood
not a big seafood guy ):
5. Favorite Latin-American food
Cabana
107-10 70th Rd.,
Forest Hills, NY
comments: It's supposed to be a Cuban-themed restaurant, but I'm not well-versed enough in their food to tell you how authentic it is. Either way, it's freakin' delicious. There's another location in South Street Seaport, but the food here seems to be prepared with more care (and it's the original location).
6. Favorite cart food
Meh, I'll go with the mainstream choice of
the Halal guy at Rockerfeller Center, who's there only at night, I think, and
around 6th and 52nd, but I hope someone can correct me.
7. Favorite salad place
The Food Exchange
on E. 59th St., off Lexington Ave.
comments: A large salad will run you $8+ but after you pick a protein and 3 other "luxury" items (avocado, artichoke, egg, cheese, and more) you get an unrestricted number of other toppings, including different types of legumes, veggies, crispy noodles, fruits, and much much more. Definitely worth checking out if you like your salads. Oh, and it comes with 2 awesome pieces of bread, many times cheesy bread! Don't go in the late afternoon to evening, though, 'cause the lunch crew will have cleaned most items out by 3 o'clock or so.
8. Favorite (any) chain restaurant (specific location, please)
Chipotle Mexican Grill
150 E 52nd St, New York, NY
(212) 755-9754
comments: I've only tried about 3 of the city locations, but this is my favorite.
9. Favorite pizza
Joe and Pat
1758 Victory Blvd
Staten Island, NY 10314
(718) 981-0887
comments: There's a chance I'm getting this wrong, but there was a pizzeria I went to once in Shaolin that had the best pizza I've ever tasted. I'm 70% sure this is the place, but I can't commit fully.
10. Favorite Italian food
teach me
11. Favorite sushi/Japanese
Mainly because of the atmosphere, I love the sushi place on the 4th (?) floor of the Mariott Marquis in Times Square. Tasty dragon roll!
Bonus: Favorite subway location
Northern Blvd. and 80th St.
Jackson Heights, NY
I live near there, so I've built up a thing with them. Plus they take care to make the sandwiches and the ingredients are fresh, as opposed to some other Subways around here.
Bonus: Favorite breakfast
this is actually a request, because I'm looking for a good breakfast place (although I realize chances are I won't live or work near it)
