NeoGAF NYC Resident Survey #1: Food

Status
Not open for further replies.
According to sources, billions of people live in New York City, and another 398 million move in every day. But we know so little of our beloved town, even when we claim to be true New Yorkers. This is the first of a series of surveys I want to run for New Yorcheans to help their neighbors and vice-versa in discovering more of the city.

Ideally, you can try one new location per week, which should be a tiny percentage of the choices available if we get good participation, and still get something out of the experience.

So this week we'll start with the simple stuff: food. Follow the format, but please feel free to add a couple of bonus choices that don't fit it:

1. Favorite Chinese food

Joe's Shanghai
136-21 37th Ave. (off Main St.)
Flushing, NY 11354
718-539-3838

comments: Do what everyone else does and start with the steamed buns, their specialty. They have 2 other locations, both in Manhattan. I've only tried the midtown one and found it (much) pricier but (slightly) less delicious. This location only accepts cash.

2. Favorite non-chain burger place

not enough experience to tell you, but I enjoy that
"Great American Burger" place on
6th Ave. and 32nd St., right near the Mid-Manhattan Mall

3. Favorite authentic Mexican food

again, not enough experience; enlighten me!

4. Favorite seafood

not a big seafood guy ):

5. Favorite Latin-American food

Cabana
107-10 70th Rd.,
Forest Hills, NY

comments: It's supposed to be a Cuban-themed restaurant, but I'm not well-versed enough in their food to tell you how authentic it is. Either way, it's freakin' delicious. There's another location in South Street Seaport, but the food here seems to be prepared with more care (and it's the original location).

6. Favorite cart food

Meh, I'll go with the mainstream choice of
the Halal guy at Rockerfeller Center, who's there only at night, I think, and
around 6th and 52nd, but I hope someone can correct me.

7. Favorite salad place

The Food Exchange
on E. 59th St., off Lexington Ave.

comments: A large salad will run you $8+ but after you pick a protein and 3 other "luxury" items (avocado, artichoke, egg, cheese, and more) you get an unrestricted number of other toppings, including different types of legumes, veggies, crispy noodles, fruits, and much much more. Definitely worth checking out if you like your salads. Oh, and it comes with 2 awesome pieces of bread, many times cheesy bread! Don't go in the late afternoon to evening, though, 'cause the lunch crew will have cleaned most items out by 3 o'clock or so.

8. Favorite (any) chain restaurant (specific location, please)

Chipotle Mexican Grill
150 E 52nd St, New York, NY
(212) 755-9754

comments: I've only tried about 3 of the city locations, but this is my favorite.

9. Favorite pizza

Joe and Pat
1758 Victory Blvd
Staten Island, NY 10314
(718) 981-0887

comments: There's a chance I'm getting this wrong, but there was a pizzeria I went to once in Shaolin that had the best pizza I've ever tasted. I'm 70% sure this is the place, but I can't commit fully.

10. Favorite Italian food

teach me

11. Favorite sushi/Japanese

Mainly because of the atmosphere, I love the sushi place on the 4th (?) floor of the Mariott Marquis in Times Square. Tasty dragon roll!

Bonus: Favorite subway location

Northern Blvd. and 80th St.
Jackson Heights, NY

I live near there, so I've built up a thing with them. Plus they take care to make the sandwiches and the ingredients are fresh, as opposed to some other Subways around here.

Bonus: Favorite breakfast

this is actually a request, because I'm looking for a good breakfast place (although I realize chances are I won't live or work near it)

I don't think Joe and Pat's is even the best pizza on Staten Island, though I know other people that like it. IMO, better pizza can be found at:

Denino's
524 Port Richmond Ave
Staten Island, NY 10302
(718) 442-9401

Grimaldi's
19 Old Fulton St
Brooklyn, NY 11201

(212) 481-1999

6. Favorite cart food

Random Dirty Water Dog Vendor :)

9. Favorite pizza

(212) 964-3269

10. Favorite Italian food

Luna Piena
243 E 53rd St,
New York 10022
Btwn 2nd & 3rd Ave

11. Favorite sushi/Japanese

Sake Bar Hagi
152 West 49th Street, lower level
(212) 764-8549
Comments: I visited Tokyo last year and going down to Hagi brings a damned tear to my eye, it's the most authentic Japanese place I've been to in the US.

If Sushi is more your thing:

Haru
205 West 43rd Street (Cross Street: Between Broadway and 8th Avenue)
New York, NY 10036-3913

Adding a catagory:

Thai
Q
108-25 Ascan Ave.
Forest Hills, NY 11375

Comments: Phenominal, this place turned me on to Thai Food.

that place is RANCID. right off the top of my head i can rattle off four better burger joints -

Shake Shack (closed till March 1)
Madison Square Park

my review - a unique combination of sirloin and brisket that is equivalent to hot, greasy sex in a potato bun. i've waited over 40 minutes on line for their wares.

Blue Smoke
116 E. 27th St

my review - Danny Meyer's other food sex destination. offers the same brisket-sirloin mixture as ShakeShack, but comes in a different bun and can be ordered rare/medium-rare.

Lure Restaurant
142 Mercer St.

my review - if you are stuck below, say, 10th street, this is the best burger you'll find in Manhattan. the waiters might roll their eyes since you're ordering a burger at a seafood restaurant, but **** them. it's worth it.

Royale
157 Avenue C (East 10th Street)

my review - if Danny Meyer didn't exist this would be the best burger place in the five boroughs for me. Huge, flavorful patty, an amazing brioche bun that soaks up a good deal of the meaty, fatty goodness, and a dive-bar decor. great stuff.

I've never heard anything good about those $20 all you can eat sushi joints.

I grew up there, but don't have many 'favorites' cuz the standards in general are pretty high.

Favorite Italian (their sauces are the thickest, most flavorful sauces I've had so it's not 'authentic' style):
Umberto's Clam House
178 Mulberry Street
Corner of Broome Street
New York City, NY

Last time I went there, I was moving in a chick who was new to NYC so we walked to Rice to Riches after:
37 Spring Street
between Mott and Mulberry St

Best Chinese Bakery:
Fay Da Bakery
82 Elizabeth St.
New York, NY 10013

Sam Pan is a couple of stores down from Duane Reade...the next block over from Rizzos..

its not the best chinese restaurant in the world.. but for typical Chinese takeout, they have the freshest and best tasting food.

You have got to be ****ing kidding me..... they are generally considered (by most everyone I know and by chowhound.com) to be some of the worst chinese food you can get in the entire United States.

My choices:

Best chinese:

111 Mott St. Hands down the best soup you can get in the city. And it's cheap enough and large enough quantities that you can get soup and try something new, eat half of both and still spend < $7.

Best italian:

Gino's in Bay Ridge... 5th and 74th or 75th I think.

Best pizza:

Grandma's Original in Brooklyn.... Nicks on Bleeker in Manhattan.

Best hamburger:

Skylight Diner on 34th and 9th

Best Mexican:

The city doesn't have much good mexican... but on 10th and 49th in Manhattan, there is a Mexican bodega and in the back, there is literally a hole in the wall that a little old Mexican woman stick her head out of when you go there.... they have tacos and that's it I believe. But these tacos are un-****ing-belivable. I lived in Texas for a year and never had anything close to as good as what they serve.

Is that the restaurant with the yellow bags? If so, I knew a bunch of Chinese people that would buy dishes there for dinner.

1. Favorite Chinese food

Don't really eat chinese

2. Favorite non-chain burger place

I know its cliche but for the price you still can't beat Corner Bistro west 4th and jane $10 = burger beer and fries.

3. Favorite authentic Mexican food

like the burritos at this joint in east village godamn I can't remember the name

4. Favorite seafood

Neptune Room 84th and amsterdam

5. Favorite Latin-American food

Cafe Habana no contest Prince and Elizabeth try the corn its unreal.

6. Favorite cart food

the Dosa cart on Washington Square South

7. Favorite salad place

Don't do this

8. Favorite (any) chain restaurant (specific location, please)

Rosarios' no question the best plain slice - orchard and stanton

10. Favorite Italian food

I don't think so.. I ate there once (never again) and don't remember any yellow bags. And there weren't any Chinese people eating there.. for a restuarant in Chinatown, that's a BAD sign.

1. Favorite Chinese food

I used to like #1 Chinese on Ave. B before it changed names. The dim sum at Chinatown Brasserie on Lafayette is great.

2. Favorite non-chain burger place

I'm mostly veg, so I'll answer based on veggie burgers- Shake Shack's mushroom burger is great and so is the veggie burger at 7A.

3. Favorite authentic Mexican food

Mexicana Mama on Hudson is incredible. They opened a second one on either 10th, 11th or 12th (can't remember) near University.

4. Favorite seafood

Blue Fin at the W Times Square is good (the 'rents love it) and so is Mermaid Inn on 2nd Ave in the East Village.

5. Favorite Latin-American food

+1 Cafe Habana

6. Favorite cart food

don't do cart food.

7. Favorite salad place

I actually like the Whole Foods salad bar.

8. Favorite (any) chain restaurant (specific location, please)

Burritovillie (a local chain) on 2nd Ave and 9th St., Better Burger on 8th Ave (air fries!)

9. Favorite pizza

Grimaldi's, also the vodka cream slice from Pomodoro in Noho is shocking

10. Favorite Italian food

Max on Avenue B-- cozy, affordable, really delicious

11. Favorite sushi/Japanese

Don't really go for sushi, but the rolls at the aforementioned Blue Fin are quite good and inventive without being garish (Sushi Samba I'm looking at you.)

Bonus: Favorite subway location
No

And I can't believe you did this topic without Best Brunch

Five Points, NoHo Star, Clinton Street Bakery and (yes, even though the crowd can be obnoxious) CoffeShop at Union Square

I recently moved to New York (west of the tappan zee), and we make John's Pizza near times square a tradition anytime we're in the city. That being said I despise actually going into the city and far prefer my suburban lifestyle (I was at 5 ave. and 42nd all week for computer training last week).

1. Favorite Chinese food

Yummy House
76 3rd Ave. (Bet 11 & 12 St.)
New York, N.Y. 10003

Designer chinese food. Lunch menu is very cheap, me and my colleagues go there at least twice a week for lunch. They got some nice spicy, fried dishes. Dinner plates are humongous.

2. Favorite non-chain burger place

I don't do american fast food.

3. Favorite authentic Mexican food

Paquitos
143 1st Ave 9th
New York, NY 10003
212.674.2071

They got other branches. For fast food, this is the place to go. Great burritos, tacos and whatever. They have some very spicy sauces. Serving amount is huge.

Burritoville
Uh...next to the movie theater in chelsea...23rd and 8th i guess...they have other locations.

This is better than Paquito's. Don't be afraid to try the catfish burrito. Yummy!

4. Favorite seafood

I love sea food, but I don't preffer any particular restaurant for it. There's a diner in Brooklyn called "Mirage". Kings Highway and E8th street. I love all of their stuff. For $11 you could have a stuffed hen w/ sides. It'll fill you up. But getting back to the seafood, I had the whiting here, it was a HUGE chunck of lightly fried fish. Savory and juicy, so big I had trouble finishing. Great sides, huge quantities. This diner is a must for Brooklynites.

5. Favorite Latin-American food

Not quite that familiar w/ particular latin restaurants.

6. Favorite cart food

Shwarma place/cart around 53rd and 7th. Every weekend you'll see a HUGE line all around the block, and i kid you not, it's for the shwarma. WTF! PPl stand around in freezing cold for this shit. I'd much rather go to my fav. small restaurant in the west village across the street from "off the wagon".

7. Favorite salad place

Park avenue and 17th street, right next to the ultra posh (and ultra lame) lounge "Underbar" at the W hotel.

Good variety, will cost around 8+ w/ a drink. But they got fresh hot food, salads, cold stuff, burritos and sushi.

5th avenue and 14th.

Better than the park avenue one. Two floors. Great fish, along w/ the regular salads.

8. Favorite (any) chain restaurant (specific location, please)

Chipotle Mexican Grill
150 E 52nd St, New York, NY
(212) 755-9754

Same as you. I love Chipotle.

9. Favorite pizza

Pie by the Pound
4th ave, between E13th and E12th.

Don't really like Pizza that much. PIE is nice because of the minimalist trendy decor, and that they are weird. Thin crust long pizzas, that they sell by the pound. You point out how big of a portion you want, they cut it, weigh it and sell it.

Great variety, and quite tasty!

10. Favorite Italian food

teach me

11. Favorite sushi/Japanese

Yama
University place and 17th, corner. Hard to find, its a basement, with a small sign!

HUGE chunks of fish. Very fresh, sometimes they cut the actual fish portion right in front of you. De-skin it and so on.

Not very elegant, but good sushi, excellent prices.

GEIDO
331 Flatbush Ave (Cross Street: Carlton Avenue)
Brooklyn, NY 11217-2813

My fav. sushi place. nice atmosphere and authentic, tasty sushi that wont rob your wallet. Try the spanish mackarel sashimi specifically, they make it so well! They spread some zinger paste and crust on it. So tasty. Get the sushi deluxe and a hot sake, you're good to go.

Bonus: Favorite subway location

too many locations to mention, i work in union square so any that's close by...there are about 3 off the top of head.

Bonus: Favorite breakfast

this is actually a request, because I'm looking for a good breakfast place (although I realize chances are I won't live or work near it)[/QUOTE]

Erm, seems like you want stuff in queens, and i'm not too familiar w/ places in queens. check out diners man.

There's a nice mexican place in brooklyn. cortelyou and E14th or something...i walk there. Great breakfast. Bagel something. Brooklyn Bagel may be.

Other stuff:

Planet Thai
Williamsburg
Awesome food at awesome prices.

Malaysian Restaurant
Nyonya
(718) 633-0808
5323 54th St.
Brooklyn, NY 11220

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME. the gilapia is a must try.

Officially I can't participate in this survey, but I just want to say that if Island Burger over on 9th and 52nd (or so) doesn't get a mention, I will be sad.

(Seriously, some of the best burgers I've ever had.)
