Netflix has slowly been getting into the business of making original movies, but it's all been smoke and acquisitions — until now. The company has announced the release schedule for its first set of films, and they're coming this year.

Arriving on October 16th is Beasts of No Nation, the new film from True Detective director Cary Fukunaga. The film will be going live on Netflix, and is still set to open in select US theaters — very likely a qualifying run for any potential awards consideration at the end of the year.

The first of four Adam Sandler films being made for Netflix, The Ridiculous Six, will debut on December 11th.
Sandler, Terry Crews, Rob Schneider, and Nick Nolte all star in the film, which will be beating the 70mm release of Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight by a couple of weeks.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend will be released on Netflix in the first quarter of next year, with a theatrical release in China and a planned domestic IMAX release.Yuen Wo-Ping , a filmmaker and stunt coordinator who's worked on everything from Once Upon a Time in China to Kill Bill, is directing.

Following that in March of 2016 is Pee-wee's Big Holiday, the collaboration between Paul Reubens and Judd Apatow. According to Netflix's description, in the film "a fateful meeting with a mysterious stranger" kicks off Pee-wee's adventure, and while I'm not going to say that they're making a huge mistake if that stranger isn't Chairry, they're making a huge mistake if that stranger isn't Chairry.

Wait what? I thought CTHD2 was a cheap cash grab, but Yuen Wo-Ping?

Hype at maximum.

Will we have to have cleavage showing in order to watch these?

For some reason I thought The Cobbler was on of Sander's Netflix movies but it turns out it was jut a theatrical bomb that ended up quickly at Netflix.

Hm, who thinks Sandler might be setting up with Netflix because Sony is fed up with him and his holiday home video's, eh, "movies"...

It is a cheap cash grab. My buddy worked on it in post, said its hot garbage. Yuen Wo-Ping showed up for a few days to "work" on it in post. Then was never heard from again.

I'm really surprised they agreed to a four film deal with Sandler. I know his last few movies haven't total bombs from what I understand, but it seems pretty clear that his appeal is starting to wane overall. Maybe his films stream really high on Netflix, though.

You can thank the people that search for his movies and stream his movies.

This. That's a dramatic move, it's obviously based off data that families with Netflix are searching his name for some comedies like crazy.

Ain't no one IN THE WORLD watching Hannibal. It's a flop that lived longer than it should have, accept that it's joining the graveyard with other fan favorites y'all. You ain't special. Hannibal's going down.

I may be mistaken, but wasn't Hannibal averaging 2-3 million at some point, at least early on? Not much for network ratings, but had it been on cable it probably would've survived pretty easily. Didn't happen, obviously, but still

I, for one, am totally excited about the Sandler films. He is comedic gold.

Yeah I'm not a huge fan but I think his films are a fun watch, though they are a bit hit and miss with me. Not sure if you were being sarcastic but I'm fine with these movies being made.

I'm in for Beasts of No Nation. Fukunaga is great.

Rest of the movies in that list I could care less about though.

A lot of this looks promising. They can go crazy with the cash grabs all they want so long as they keep providing quality content as well - and that doesn't seem to be an issue.

the fukunaga film sounds great but i hope it doesn't limit the theatrical release too much because i want to see his work on the big screen.

i think they're a good match. sandler is probably waning only in the sense that going to the cinema is expensive and becoming more of a big event like going to a concert for people, which doesn't lend itself to a simple comedy compared to jurassic world, but relaxing and watching on netflix seems like the perfect fit for what he does.
