Netflix to expand to UK, Ireland in 'early 2012,' looks to challenge Lovefilm

Well it looks like Netflix's rumored UK launch was a lot more than just a rumor. Today, the company announced that it will indeed expand to the UK and Ireland "in early 2012," promising to offer unlimited streaming on PCs, tablets and mobile devices at a "low monthly subscription price."

The company didn't say what that price would be, nor did it offer any details on available content or supported devices, though more details will be announced closer to its launch. We're also expecting to hear more from Netflix during its Q3 earnings conference call later today, when we should find out about the impact of its recent price hike and Qwikster turnaround. Whether or not its foray into the UK can loosen Lovefilm's grip on the domestic market, however, remains to be seen.

finally, now we need just hulu and im set

are all the shows universal on netflix or region locked? always wondered.

Pretty sure they are region locked.

Canada Gaf has been saying they have a sub-par selection.

They're going to have to offer up something really good to make me want to switch from LOVEFiLM.

I'm ready! Managed to be able to use it for a couple on months in the UK when it first hit the Xbox in the US.

Here's hoping they have a decent launch catalog.

I'm going to go ahead and assume they aren't offering mail rentals? I don't really care, it's just that they would only be competing with Lovefilm in the streaming sector, where I feel Lovefilm generates very little revenue.

I know you brits cant wait to watch our Office.

lol :D

Lovefilm are shite when it comes to streaming content so it'll be good to finally have some competition around.

Sad thing is I imagine most HBO stuff will be tied to Sky subscriptions which will hamper the service somewhat.

I doubt they could offer me much in terms of TV. Their movie selection would have to be exceptional to make me consider. The Sky streaming app gives me access to hundreds of movies.

Actually, I wouldn't mind checking out a few episodes of the Zig and Zag era Den

I hope we get some of those quirky things, although I would be happy if some of the BBC stuff is accessible over here - I could see them getting a bit finicky (like with iPlayer)

Get http://unblock-us.com/ and have Netflix now, says the happy Netflix user in Australia

Unblock-us also do UK redirection so there may be some way we can choose which Netflix we want as I expect them to have different libraries, but then I also expect the US library to be superior so if they leave that as default I won't complain.

Commence epic Amazon Netflix wars.

Better come with all the good content of US Netflix and HD streaming. If not then no buy, I'll stick with lovefim.

that would be something too, if amazon uk do prime streaming like they do in US, and are able to offer the same variety of content that could be pretty big too

i thought lovefilm was netflix owned. glad to here that they're not, maybe they'll actually try now there's competition.

Lovefilm are owned by Amazon so netflicks will have to offer something special to compete. More competition the better though.

We don't even get HBO on Netflix in the US.

LoveFilm's service is okay but could do with being cheaper.

Between Netflix and Tesco's potential new service I smell a PRICE WAR!!!!!
