Netflix Partners with Starz to Add 2,500 Titles

Netflix has signed a deal with Starz to make more than 2,500 titles from Starz Play available for instant streaming, at no additional charge for Netflix unlimited customers ($8.99 per month and higher subscriptions). The first 1,000 titles should be available on the Netflix website soon, and include Spiderman 3, Enchanted, Ratatouille, Pirates of the Carribbean: At World's End, Superbad, No Country for Old Men, and more.

A sneak preview of the new Starz series Crash will also be available, and new episodes will be available on the same day and date of release.

Good stuff, they're really improving this service very fast. Just the other day they made a deal to get currently airing CBS/ABC/NBC TV shows on Netflix Instant Watching and now this. THey're starting to get a pretty decent library now and with the upcoming Xbox360 update allowing you to stream these to your TV I can see myself using it a lot more.

HOLY SHIT! NEWS OF THE DAY!~

Now if they'd only support OSX already, or at least lower our rates, it's kind of not fair.

They promised this (along with support for other browsers like Firefox) before the end of 2008 IIRC. They are waiting on Microsoft's Silverlight I think.

Someone tell them to get season 2 of 30 Rock up there. >:(

Agreed. Just got into the show through Netflix and it's pretty good so far.

There are a lot of shows that I wish were up there. I would be more than happy to pay a flat fee to watch movies, just as I do with music with the Zune service.

I don't know much of the details with the Netflix partnership with Microsoft, but I would assume that it entails also providing more and more content with their service, which is always good.

The Roku Player was already a great value, and this is a big step up.

There always was a strong classics library on Watch Instantly, but a drought of newer content. But now they'll have more recent selections than even the substantial Starz On Demand section on my digital cable.

And lately Netflix has been announcing some major shit, like the NBC/CBS/Disney channel agreements for same-week programming & back catalogs. In addition, Roku is going to open the box up to other web-based video like Hulu, etc, which will be even better.

The last few weeks have seen Netflix building a great holiday push for the Roku and the Watch Instantly equipped Blu-Ray players. :D

EDIT: HOLY SHIT THE NEW STARZ CONTENT JUST WENT LIVE:

Arrrgh I just used my bonus disc (from the free trials) on a movie that was in this package :(

There is a link for a "Starz Live TV Channel" on the page as well, does that mean you can watch the channel for free on netflix too? (I'm at work and can't check)

The 8.99 package is getting to be downright stealing at this point.

Not a Netflix subscriber yet, but may sign up when the new Xbox dashboard hits later in the year. Having instant view built in and access to this stuff is going to be cool.

fuck yea this is awesome
the current netflix streaming catalog is like 99.9% terrible

Even though I've yet to watch anything streamed, their selection is pretty good, I think. Plenty of independent, foreign and classics, obscure and otherwise; there are even films that aren't available anywhere on DVD. The downside is that they seem to only have the streaming rights for a limited time on some films, so they aren't always going to be viewable.

All this Disney and CBS stuff from the Starz deal is what I couldn't really care less about.

Why do I have to pay 8.99$ to stream Superbad alone in Europe when it's unlimited on Netflix? I mean, I know *why*, but still. Is there even anything like this in the UK?

I can pay 25$ monthly to see 25 shitty movies (out of 25) here in Scandinavia, where half of those titles gets changed each month, that is some GREAT OFFER or not.

Europe really needs to get this shit together to stop piracy, an offer like this here would help so god damn much.

This is so beautiful. Just think, ten years ago I'd be at the mercy of cable schedules and driving to blockbuster. Now I get whatever I want, when I want it.

I tested out a few of the new Starz selections on my Roku box and the quality is consistent with the regular Watch Instantly catalog, just fine.

The only difference you'll notice is a brief Starzplay logo at the beginning that lasts a few seconds. This rox.

Wow, this is way beyond what I was expecting even once the Netflix/X360 deal activated. Talk about value added.

Not sure if anyone posted this yesterday, but this is pretty cool as well...

Netflix API open to all: let the developing begin

http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/30/netflix-api-open-to-all-let-the-developing-begin/

Good news, developers of the world -- the Netflix API will be open to all starting tomorrow. As of October 1st, absolutely anyone can self-signup by visiting the read link, and while details are a tad sketchy at the moment, it sounds like this could hold some serious promise. The API itself allows access to data for 100,000 movie and TV episode titles, is completely free and (most importantly) allows commercial use. In other words, it's kosher if a bright developer out there somewhere feels like "creating an iPhone app to sell for $0.99 (Netflix's words, not ours)." On the technical side, the API includes a REST API, Javascript API and ATOM feeds, and it also uses OAuth standard security "to allow the subscriber to control which applications can access the service on his or her behalf." It's time to get creative, folks.

I am fapping furiously all over my Roku. Big Trouble in Little China....Robocop 1&2&3...Stephen Segal in 5 minutes of Executive Decision. All over my face.

Edit: Man this is like a 80's and 90's action movie fan's wet dream.

Bumping this, but it looks like CBS now has their recently shown TV shows because Heroes Season 3 is up with the first three episodes. It also looks like CBS, NBC, ABC, Disney, etc. put up some of their back catalogs as well.

I want to know why the movie Fear of a Black Hat is censored. It's supposed to be rated R and within the first couple minutes they censor the words "dick" that show up on the screen by using a computer generated hat to cover the word up along with a goofy sound so you can't hear the announcer say it.

What is going on with that?
