To be released August 5

The animated feature, which had been scheduled for a March 18 theatrical release, will now go to the streaming service instead.

Netflix has picked up Paramount Pictures’ domestic rights to The Little Prince, the new animated film based on the 1943 book by Antoine de Saint-Exupery.

The film, directed by Mark Osborne, an Oscar nominee for Kung Fu Panda, premiered out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival last May and has grossed roughly $80 million overseas, where it was handled by various distributors. Last month, it was awarded France’s Cesar Award for best animated film.

Little Prince combines 3D computer animation and stop-motion, and has a voice cast that includes Jeff Bridges, Rachel McAdams, Paul Rudd, Marion Cotillard, James Franco and Benicio del Toro.

Saw that in the other thread. Shame it's not going to theaters, but it's better than nothing, certainly.

Huh, Was there any word as to why it was pulled from theaters? and if not would a netflix purchase of the rights be the reason? I wonder what the movie was tracking to do business wise in the states and Paramount saw an easy cash out through Netflix vs what they would get with a theatrical release.

One word: Zootopia.

The obvious (and probably correct) explanation is that Zootopia was likely going to murder it and Paramount offloaded it.

Just the other day, I was showing my sister the trailer for the film as she had no idea of it existing. When she said she wanted to go see it, I had to tell her the bad news about Paramount dropping the film at the last minute. So this is great. I'm visiting my Mom next month, and she's a HUGE fan of the original book, so hopefully it'll be on the New Zealand Netflix by then.

I still don't know why Paramount got cold feet?

I know Zootopia is killing it, but what if kids and family want to watch another family friendly film?

Movie executives make such bizarre decisions.

I'm glad to hear that someone picked it up. A friend of mine worked as a sculptor for the stop motion animation and was crushed when she found out that it was being dropped - the local newspaper even ran an article about her involvement in the film.

Yeah, I won't pretend to know how it works, but....we already saw Zootopia, and my family is always on the lookout for a new excuse to hit the theater together. My parents were planning to come along as well. It seems to have good cross-generational appeal.

I'm wondering why they didn't just push back the date a month or two.

How could they not have faith in that? Its looks amazing and the sort of animated movie that does gangbusters.

Thank you Netflix! It's like if an animated movie isn't from Disney, Pixar and DreamWorks, then distributors has zero confidence in the film.

Said it in the other thread but glad to see it's still making it stateside, even if it's not in theaters. Can't wait for an official date.
