The new issue is out now. We've got the goods on Half-Life 2: Aftermath (and beyond) and SiN Episodes. We go hands-on with Day of Defeat Source and Lost Coast. Valve honcho Gabe Newell outlines Steam's future and talks extensive shit on Microsoft's 360 and Vista, as well as Sony's PS3. We introdce EGM-style Afterthoughts coverage with a BF2 post-mortem and info on Special Forces. Good stuff.

Is this on newsstands or just subscribers?

I want to read up more on Aftermath. :D

And what does that mean a new Half LIfe game every 3 months? If Aftermath episodic content and not a true expansion?

As hopeless as the idea of it ever happening is, have they finally given ANYTHING new on TF2? It would be nice if they would finally just come out and say it's canceled

Tons of stuff you've never heard anywhere else about Aftermath, and yeah it's episode 1 in a series of continuing content. : )

We tried, and they're still not willing to talk about it. Certain hints I got, however, point to it happening. Let's just say that as a former longtime TFC clanner I had given up hope--now I've got it back.

that's reassuring I had pretty much given up all hope as well. it's hard not to when they keep setting a time period for when information will be given only to have it pass by with nothing

I'll definitely pick that magazine up. Since I picked up the WoW trial, CGW is now easily my favorite PC magazine out there.

So Valve talked about the 360 huh? I'm praying to God that they port CS: Source to it. I have it on PC of course, but I'm just so much more skilled with a controller than a mouse. Any word on that?

Is BF2: Special Forces as stupid as it looks?

I don't think it's a bad idea...BF2 was way too vehicle based for my tastes. It's an amazing game by all means, but I like to do combat on foot more than it was possible in BF2.

It's possible but I highly doubt it. Gabe doesn't sound like he wants anything to do with next-gen consoles at this point, but then things change. Also, you can imagine his take on the hard drive scenario.

I got the new issue also, and between all the valve stuff, WW2 section, and BF2: Special Forces, i am realizing that i need a better computer.

Right...if you've ever played Mashtuur, Karkand, or Sharqi in 16-player maps, the potential is obvious. Really, it's Splinter Cell meets Battlefield, more emphasis on derring-do and less on whoring the big war machines.

Just read the interview.. nothing that exciting is revealed about Aftermath at all. They're keeping it under wraps. What was interesting was that Aftermath is supposed to be the first of many episodes released for Half Life 2. They currently want to get out a new episode every three months (of course, this is Valve...) and once a year they'll release boxed version of everything they put out that year.

Then towards the end of the interview Gabe rips on Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, because he doesn't seem to think any of them are heading in the right direction (also gets in a dig about how the 360 is going backwards without a hard drive). The right direction is apparently World Of WarCraft.

Gabe seems to be angry at the videogame industry in general. He's always ripping on just about everything. Valve ported Counter-Strike to the Xbox, so I'm really hoping that they do the same with the next generation of CS...And port it to the next generation of the Xbox.

So, FartOfWar, is it correct to assume that those supposed "leaked" slides of Half-Life 3 on the Xbox 360 are bunk?

The slide is legit, but it never said anything about xbox 360. The slide was about XNA.

You didn't find the Hydra talk interesting? The bits about Alyx's new powers, new grav gun uses, vehicles, context sensitive cooperative A.I., all that.

Also Suaveric, what did you think about DOD's built-in user-based evolution, simultaneous Steam versions, and the "end of monolithic engine updates"?

I didn't read the DoD stuff. I thought it was interesting that there are two versions of Steam running right now, but that's all behind the scenes stuff, no one can tell.

And it was nice to hear there will be more grav gun things and more interactions with Alyx, but I expected as much. Actually, I thought we'd be playing as Alyx, this was the first I had heard otherwise. So we will be playing with Gordon again?

One other point I was surprised at was that they didn't consider the expansions to the first Half Life games canon, but all of the expansions to the Half Life 2 will be. So missing these episodes means (I assume) missing big parts of the official story.

i haven't gotten the latest issue of CGW in the mail yet, but weren't they suppose to have some info on COD 2's MP?

Yep, but it turns out that COD2's mp is more or less the smae as COD1's. None of UO's tanks or arty, and they scrapped plans to have squad leaders who issued plays prior to matches a la NFL playbooks.

Definitely pick up CGW for exclusive screens and hands-on with Aftermath (and Lost Coast). Nice issue for the only other PC shooter that matters this year. :)

Starting Monday, 1UP will kick off its companion piece "Steam Punks," a Valve cover story, which will feature exclusive screens of all the games (Aftermath, Lost Coast, DoD, SiN, HL2 Xbox direct feed), videos, hands-on, as well as the full Gabe Newell video interview.

Plus, an exclusive comic by the creator of Apostasy (http://www.phwcomics.com/index.php?pid=12&cs=13) called Apostasy Zero which details the moments that lead up to his Garry's Mod-made epic.

It will be schweet.

As much as I love Gabby and Valve, he needs to STFU and get to work on the next gen. He may not like it, but it's reality, so fucking deal with it.

....

It means that the slide was about XNA games, and did not imply that HL3 is on Xbox360.

JEEEEZ </napolian dynamite>

It's their own damn fault. They just spend 40 million to make Half-Life2 and more importantly, the SOURCE engine.

Thing is, the SOURCE engine doesn't gain anything from multicore CPU, as it's basically a single threaded engine. So in order for them to get any performance out of the new consoles, they need to recode a pretty big portion of it to take advantage of the additional cores. Valve made the wrong decision and it's going to be an expansive one for them...
