New Data Shows Steam is Now Over 50% Larger than PlayStation

Thats fine. I'm fine with that. But don't away, your laptop has been stolen. What are you gonna do now?
That 11900K just went up in a puff of smoke. What ya gonna do now?

Well in this case use my older (2020) Ryzen 7 4700U laptop with 32gb ddr4 cl20 3200 + Vega 7 and then just use my backup i9 10900 to swap in for my 11900k? Hell if I'm that desperate I can fire my 4790k system up again, it's still more capable than people realize.

But to your point, a new pc build around $1,000 is still more than enough to play every game and if we want to get more.. the used market still exists.

Ya, Gabe just sent 850 million to build a new sea research yacht.
Sir Gabe is allowed to do whatever he wants

Imagine all the people over the past 20 years saying "PC is dead" finally eating crow, properly. Glad I've been onboard with Steam since day one, easily one of the best platforms to use. Mind you the below is not my original account but it's my current one.

I'm so butthurt I lost my 2006 account, would have loved that 20 years is service badge instead I'm at 16.

Nonsense. Monthly users != "larger" in any sense.

Revenue is the real metric, and there are a ton of free to play games on Steam.

By these standards mobile is "larger" than both of them.

Edit. Of course mobile is larger than all of them in all metrics of measurement.

In a crazy turn of events, at least some of us were banking on MS to release a new "console" that would let us leave PS and switch to Steam.

Unfortunately, I don't think that's gonna happen anymore though.

Feels like a reasonable estimate to me.

Users online and in-game are made available by Valve, and it seems reasonable that those should track somewhat with MAU.

July 2021:
Users online: 25M
Users in-game: 7.1M

July 2026:
Users online: 41.3M
Users in-game: 13.8M

Users online growth: 65%
Users in-game growth: 94%

132M MAU 2021 * 1.65 = ~218M MAU.

The outsized growth in online:in-game-ratio is interesting. Idle games maybe?

Mobile gaming is bigger than Steam and PlayStation combined - both by number of users, and by revenue. You can even throw Xbox and Nintendo in the mix for good measure, it doesn't matter.

The most ironic part is that Steam is the one that killed physical media on PC and built its entire empire on its death.
The first part of the statement is completley false and borders on delusional revisionism.

Retailers are the ones that attempted to kill physical media on PC (and PC gaming as whole, as they were on it) by progressively robbing it of any meaningful shelf space to favor consoles in the early 2000.
Steam is just one of the first that came out with a solution to that problem.

To be fair, people are much less likely to boot up their PS5 and not play games on it.
I mean, my very own PS4 Pro did almost nothing but play Youtube videos for the three years or so I owned it (before it died in a thunderstorm).
I briefly played a handful of exclusives on it from time to time, half of which I ended up rebuying on PC as soon as Sony ported them.

If you think that media consumption (netflix, prime video, youtube, etc) through a console is a rare phenomenon I don't know what to tell you.

Who would have thought giving superb service and not shitting on their customers would work out this great.

Digital was always the natural development for PC with or without Steam. Buying DVD drives somewhat made sense back in the day, but BD drives? No one bought BD drives... so what would physical have looked like with 100GB+ games? The last physical game we got was Flight Sim 2020 and it looks like this

Fastest install time with an internal drive is like 6-7 hours.

I just hit 16 years too, last month. I didn't login to my Steam account for years due to console gaming, but of course my games were still there the day that I did. Sony probably would have deleted my account. Now, as of around 3 years ago, I'm back on Steam probably around 90% of the time. And I don't see myself leaving again given the current state of consoles. It's PC + Nintendo starting in 2028 for me.

I hope we one day return to a point where some AAA games can be made for PC, without being crippled by having to accommodate inferior platforms.

I get what you mean. I also sometimes use my console just for media consumption. What I'm saying is, the PC being a multi-function device makes it much more likely to be used for things other than gaming simply because it does a lot more. I use my PC for Stable Diffusion, UE5 training, drafting work documents, gaming, etc. My PS5 has been mostly idle for months because there's nothing it does my PC doesn't do better.

PC also does media consumption and better than consoles too.

It was already dying with or without Steam existing.

I was there when Steam was still very tiny, and retail PC games were already getting shoved into an ever smaller corners at shops, with the biggest chunk given to MMO sub/currency cards in the mid 2000s.

MS needs to release an XBOX Steam machine that is more powerful at a reasonable price. They have the ability to do so with the Strix Halo APU.

I originally had a "day one" account I opened the very first day Steam started just as an experimental service hosting just Counter-strike. Before they even sold anything on it.
I lost it over time because when HL2 released and I gave the copy to my brother asking him to go home, activate it and download the game, the moron somehow managed to create a new account that had my userID and password swapped instead of using the existing one.

Given that at that time HL2 was basically the only meaningful purchase I had on it (except CS and HL1 that at that point were incredibly cheap to replace) I abandoned the original account and decided to keep the new one.

Easy piracy was ravaging PC gaming. Physical could not compete with piracy. If you were buying physical at this time, it was basically on principle only. You were paying to get a worse experience than piracy, typically.

Steam's real test was having to compete with piracy. That it was able to do that made it a foregone conclusion that it would finish off physical, but it's not like it killed an otherwise healthy physical market.

Same for me, I had an original account for HL2, forgot about it until 2007 when I was starting to ease into digital on PC, and the email attached to it was from some older ISP I had.

Couldn't be bothered, and made a new account then. I do wish I had the 20 year badge though.

Steam games are too expensive, it needs a cashback system.
Steam's cashback system comes in the form of Steam Trading Cards.

Or just pay for them using a credit card with cashback rewards, if you have one.

31.1m in Europe, then extrapolating to 198m globally based on bandwidth. No idea how accurate that is. This only really works if people's downloading habits are the same in all regions.

I've no doubt Steam active users is higher than PS but I don't really have any faith that this is an accurate estimate.
You think people's "downloading habits" vary between regions?
Like, people in China download only half of each game compared to Europeans who download every game five times for shits and giggles?

Can you elaborate?

Look, I hate Sony right now so I don't want to do this. Nope.

MAU is not the metric that tells us anything here.

In the other thread(about PC gaming ending if the prices stay up) some users mentioned that of course most PC gamers have shit PCs and so they won't be affected and the new steambox is way better than most PC gamers rigs. So if you have 10 million people playing minesweeper for free, it's not the same.

Not fungible. Not apples to apples. Sony still sucks. Bring back physical.
