How does one figure out the regular zoom rating (like, 10x) from the mm rating?
A rough estimate is to divide the larger number by the smaller number. So an 18-70mm lense would be ~3.89x zoom.

how much does it cost?

The EOS Digital Rebel XT model is offered in two kit configurations: with and without Canon’s high-quality EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom lens. The estimated street price for the zoom lens kit will be $999* while the estimated street price for the body only kit will be $899*. The original Digital Rebel will be available at the same time for a reduced estimated street price of $799* for the zoom lens kit. Standard accessories in both camera kits include a battery pack and charger, software, manuals, interface cables, neckstrap and Canon U.S.A. limited warranty. The EOS Digital Rebel XT camera will be offered in both the stylish brushed silver patina and the sleek Canon matte-black finish.
The funny thing is it was going to be unveiled next week but it got leaked yesterday and forced Canon to announce it early.

The 35 mm equivalents are better measures than the zoom rating because they tell you precisely what you're getting. A 5X zoom will tell you the range of the lens, but it won't tell you how much tele or wide angle you really have.

Can a camera expert tell me how it compares to my Cybershot F717

Better :)

1MP(?) more. Higher ISO settings. I'd guess (without knowing the Sony well) less noise at higher ISO. Lens variety. Faster high-end shutter-speeds. More responsive shutter (less shutter lag).
Real (non-electronic) viewfinder.

Those are just a few of the things that the D-Rebel (or pretty much any DSLR) offers over something like the Sony...

That's good. www.dpreview.com is a great resource for learning about digital cameras. You can pick up a lot of techinical knowledge by reading through a few of their reviews. And if you know what most of the terms in their glossary mean, then you can look up the specifications page for any camera you are curious about and quickly get a good idea of how it compares to yours.

lacks enthusiasm.
Oooooh, the black body looks so tempting. I'm absolutely satisfied with the pictures my DigiRebel takes, but i'd be lying if I wasn't interested in this. I'm really surprised to see the price the same as the original Rebel. Nikon's response should be interesting...

nice!

I'm look forward to picking up an older gen rebel when the price drops after this one comes out.

Been wanting a digital SLR for a while now.

If the last round was any indication, they'll release something that costs more, yet can't do ISO 100.

its a tossup, apparently canon is playing catchup in the framerate department, and nikon ISO. but nikons usually cost more (a lot) for the same class as opposed to canons.

I don't think many Nikon users are too worried about the lack of ISO 100. From what I've read, the noise at 200 is very acceptable (though higher than the Rebel at 100). On the flipside, the noise at higher ISOs is supposed to be lower on the D70.

With this announcement and aggressive pricing, it's getting harder to put my finger on what I will get if I can ever afford it... the D. Rebel just dropped to $1000 here in Canada. The Pentax *ist DS (possibly my first choice given legacy lenses, if I can find the damn things -- can only find my 28 and 50mm primes right now :( ) is about $1200 and the D70 (which uses the same sensor) is $1600.

For my purposes, the D70's out of the running, but I've used the Rebel (fairly extensively) and like it, though my pre-existing PEntax equipment is a big plus for me. Never mind fairly good availability of quality, older lenses.

300chf ain't shit to me
I'm seriously considering getting a good camera in the near future, and this one looks beautiful. Right up my alley.

That's a really good point, too.
