I was browsing the Playstation store for the Live from Playstation app when I stumbled upon something called the Network Media Player. Thinking that it might be a very simple PSMobile app, I was surprised to see that it was published by SCEE. So I gave it a download which came in at about 60-odd megabytes.
Starting the App I was greeted by a charming blue kangaroo holding a Vita. Could this be the new (or old?) Sony DLNA mascot?
The main app screen allows you to select a server from the list of selected servers you searched for earlier.
There is an option for Videos and Pictures but I haven't checked them since foobar2000's plugin only seems to support music.
So all in all this might be bit of a preview for what is to come on the PS4.
Edit: Apparently the game came out on Wednesday 29th October on the EU store and is also available on the Asia stores, just not on the US store.
Here's a link to the app on the UK store:

The next screen requires you to select a DLNA server after searching the local network. I'm using the UPnP plugin for foobar2000 which got picked up without any issues.

Standard UPnP browsing which was quite fast when scrolling through, much faster than the good ol' PS3. There is the option to copy to memory card.
Music playback screen. Unfortunately the app can't play music in the background but I think that's on account of the small amount ram the Vita has.
There is also an alternate browsing view where items show up as folders:

According to the PS store it supports H.264 Baseline/Main/High Profile Level 4.0 @ 1920x1080/30p and and just JPEGs.
