New EDGE scores (MGS3, Mario Power Tennis)

You know nothing about the game and I would say you haven't even played it if this is the basis for your argument. If you have played the game, then the part which is in bold is an incredibly ignorant statement.

Sorry, just because you dont like my opinion doesn't mean I haven't played the game. In case you missed it, I did say that I LIKE MGS3 - I just don't understand what about the gameplay makes it better than, say, Halo 2, Half-Life 2, GTA:SA, or Ninja Gaiden...all of which imo are far better games this year. Those four games play better, and are simply more fun for me. I absolutely, honestly think MGS3 gameplay is kinda boring, I most likely won't ever replay it like the aforementioned games. But I enjoy the ride while it lasts. Seriously, why don't you tell me what's so great about MGS3 that it deserves goty over those others?

How many of you posting in this thread actually read the magazine?

I once suggested to Edge that they should put scores on their articles as well, so people could just go straight onto the internet and argue about them without having to do all that reading shit, but they never took me up on it.

I'm surprised that they would be reticent to do so, since all anyone seems to care about is integers.

New Edge! 7546985476954879654876547865978659786597!

No way! 84396554879657865978659786597658! Bastards!

Whoa, I like that search engine. And the system comparisons, haha. Xbox, doh! Mega Drive rulez!

Wait, they gave Gunstar Heroes a 6? Shit.

So Mario Tennis, Virtua Tennis and VT2 all got an 8? I wonder what MPT did wrong by comparison? Is there less progression between MT64 & MPT than VT and VT2?

I'm guessing it's a case of "We hate power moves and feel like it ruins the game!" Anyone care to confirm?

Even so 5 is a weird score. Grab three friends, play exhibition, knock off power-shots and you have one of the finest 4p games anywhere. I agree that the power-shots and gimmicks are quite poor, in fact the mind boggles as to how they were left in the game, but the game is immensly fun in multiplayer.

Saying that though I don't actually think it's as good as MT64, you seemed to have a greater degree of control on the N64 game. I lost my copy but I'm going to try and hunt one down because I'm very curious if this is the case.

Single Player - Agree
Multiplayer - You can turn them off, so disagree.
Can't you turn them off in single player?

Damn it... my favourite N64 game better not be ruined on the GC, i've been waiting 4 years for it =\

Not for tournaments, you cannot; and it doesn't ruin it, necessarily. But, to have to go through the tournaments with them is not always fun.

I find the control over shots to be much greater in MPT. I found that in MT64 Boo was the only character who could curve any shots, and now I find I can use most characters to do so. Just my two cents.

No you can't. :(
It gets very annoying when going through the single player game in doubles, it's not unusual to have upwards of 5 or 6 power-shots in one rally. Really makes the sp game a chore.
If on the otherhand you will play a lot of mp, then it's definitely worth getting.

I see you don't have any friends, too bad! :( :(

Or, if you're like me, and create detailed storylines by yourself, it's worth getting.

Started out with Bowser Jr. and Bowser, but Bowser was never letting any shots through, so I went to Wiggler...same problem. Then to Petey...same problem. Then, went with Yoshi, and despite his insolence in never staying in the front or back, I get to hit the ball a bit more and all is welll. Been playing singles now, no power shots...some tough stuff. Just for single player, playing Pro Star Opponents is plenty challenging.

Yoshi has been my partner for the past few days as well, you're right about him as well. He's always jumping between the baseline and net, if he wasn't so cute I'd smack him one.

Pro can offer up a good challenge, some rallies can go on for an age as well, making things that little bit more tense. Have you unlocked Ace yet Memles? Bloody difficult stuff, I'm struggling big time at the moment. I'm breaking in a new player though, unlocked the star of Paratroopa 2 days ago and he's my new player of choice. Love his lunge, almost jumps half the court, fast little fella as well.

Paratroopa is too damn WEAK.

I think by Pro I meant Ace...the highest difficulty is what I've been playing on. I can never discern between the names.

Using Bowser Jr., I can pretty well control Ace. When I first start playing someone new, I usually drop the first set. Some characters can be beaten with combinations of lobs to force them back and give me a chance to rush the net, and then drop shots when they rush the net that they tend to make unforced errors on. Others don't fall for either, so I have to adjust the way I play. Recently had a little 5 setter with Mario that was a barnburner, though. Went the full 5 sets, pulled off an extremely tight victory.\

If you want a challenge. Go into a Doubles match against Petey Pirahna and Wiggler, both on Ace. Got raped in the first set of that one. What a match.

Yes, the fact that I enjoy Mario Tennis single player means I have no friends. :P

Oh well, i'm still getting it as soon as the PAL version comes out, I know i'll still enjoy it.

fellas, fellas, fellas.
what you fail to understand is that 7 is NOT an average score for EDGE.
5 is average.

unlike your north american understanding and public perception. you guys seem to think 7 is 5...

anyways, the mgs3 score is unfortunate, but the camera does indeed hold it back....

I'm also wondering what people see in this game, GAF GOTY? It's good and enjoyable but, it's kinda boring actually and the gameplay is not too much different from MGS2. Honestly I think people are blinded by the awesome cutscenes and are are not actually judging the game for the gameplay. The cutscenes ARE awesome, but really I found myself just wanting to see the next cutscene over having much fun with the game itself. Halo 2, Half-Life 2, and GTA:SA are all infinitely better GAMES.
Where do I fit into your equation? I don't think the cut-scenes are all that special (though entertaining). MGS3 would get my "vote" because of the gameplay, which I've found to be significantly better than MGS2 (level design + CQC).

And now I'm going to make a fairly precarious argument. MGS3, more than any other game, is enjoyable to the extent that it is what you make of it. For one, if you play the game on anything other than Hard, you're immediately limiting your experience. And otherwise, it's possible to make it through the game without utilizing half of the equipment or potential strategy. And for that, Konami unfortunately places a lot of the responsibility on the gamer. Unless each person WANTS to get the most out of the experience, it likely will not happen.

People understand that, it just seems to majority feels Mario Power Tennis is an above average game. More a 6 than a 5.

The Power Shots are what add a great deal of strategy to the game. Even fucking EGM fucked up the purpose of the Power Shots in their review. One of the writers claimed the game was glitchy because you could hit a ball even after it passed you, to which I say "You're fired mother fucker". The point of power shot is to either save a missed return if it's out of reach, or wait until your opponent just used his power shot, and then use yours knowing he can't return. I've played extensive 4-player, and out of the eight or so people taking turns nobody fucking complained about the power shot. Fucking Edge. Fucking EGM.
