I've been VERY careful not to spoil this for myself, but is this basically FFVII told through a movie, or is it more of a follow up or prequel?

I did see the trailer at E3, but it was all so cool it became an immediate blur in my mind.

Advent Children + Crisis Core + Dirge of Cerberus is FFVII-2.

All signs point to Crisis Core being the sequel to Before Crisis and another prequel to FFVII, except starring Zack and featuring anime FMV sequences in the style of the Before Crisis ads and Last Order.

So Before Crisis + Crisis Core = FFVII-0, and Advent Children + Dirge of Cerberus = FFVII-2.
