New GunGriffon: Allied Strike Updated Impressions!

I've played the PS2 and Sega Saturn versions and loved it! Picking this up on the 15th! :D

Tis’ the season to blow stuff up, considering that both Microsoft’s MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf and Tecmo’s GunGriffon: Allied Strike are both coming out this month. In fact, with the amount of anticipation surrounding MechAssault 2 leads the question as to why Tecmo decided to release their mech-based combat title in such proximity. The answer is that Tecmo believes they have put together a solid combat/action title that capitalizes on the cult following of the classic Sega Saturn series with the hopes of broadening that audience by attracting some MechAssault fans that just can’t hold out a couple more weeks until Lone Wolf is unleashed. From what we have seen so far, Tecmo’s wild card just may prove to score more than a few points as their style of gameplay is a good blend of fast paced action of MechAssault with a few subtle sim-style elements without the overly laborious gameplay of Steel Battalion.

Briefing

As one might expect, GunGriffon: Allied Strike it set in a post apocalyptic Earth where hostility has overtaken any remnants of peace and the hope for a promising future has become more of a nightmare than a dream. Most all of Earth’s resources have been depleted and the remaining powers that be are caught up in a never-ending struggle to control what little is left. GunGriffon: Allied Strike puts players behind the controls of the most powerful machines that have stormed across the Earth’s surface as well as flown through the air. Players will assume the role of a renegade soldier who joins forces with an anti-tank group with the primary mission of taking down all enemy tanks. Piloting their “HIGH MAC,” which is short for High-Mobility Armored Combat System, to take on the countless numbers of other HIGH MACs, tanks, choppers and any other mechanized warriors that have their sites set on the fields of battle. GunGriffon: Allied Strike will feature 13 missions that have a wide range of mission goals from destroying fortified bunkers to protecting cargo transports from lifting off from an airfield under siege. The action will take place in a number of areas of Asia such as Uzbekistan, Burma, and South China. Each location offers players a unique set of environments that range from mountainous landscapes to barren deserts that leave the field wide open for plenty of long range combat.

Man - this game is getting NO love at all -

downloading the movies now - This has been on my radar for a while now, but with no hype whatsoever, I was getting worried. Thanks for the post.

I've got my eye on it too. GG1-2 were excellent, but Blaze was total crap.

Are the PS2/PC versions of this game still in the works, or is it Xbox only now?

wow - the first movie i downloaded has some kick ass explosions - and the speed /framerate looks nice. This may edge out Mechassault2 for me.

I loved the Saturn Gun Griffon games, but, seriously, Blaze absolutely annihilated my soul. Just didn't do anything for me.

I too am a fan of the GunGriffon series! I still love the intro to GunGriffon1 on Saturn. I even imported the sequel and played the help out of it. I even imported Gungriffon 2 and played via the Saturn link cable. I wasn't thrilled with the direction the series took with the PS2 versions. More arcadey and faster paced with awful controls. I plan on picking up this game and MechAssault2. The more mech games the better. I'm just glad we're finally getting more info on the game. I just hope it's decent and will scratch that destructive itch. With online play as well, I won't get my hopes up but I expect to be pleased.

So while we're on the subject, the Saturn imports... is there just a Gungriffon 2 or is there something else too other than the first game? I recently rebought the first game on US Saturn because I loved it so much and playing Steel Batallion obviously took a lot of influence from it.

Online co-op sounds awesome (I think i read it's included - on TXB) - more games (halo2, cough cough) need to implement that option.

MechAssault2 will probably take a back seat with me for a while - on account that it's coming out after Christmas. But GG is looking like it's going to fill that void nicely.

There were only two GunGriffon games on the Sega Saturn. If your looking for something similar but fun check out the Moblie Suit Gundam games for the Saturn. I can't remember the full name of the trilogy, but I enjoyed the heck out of them. And I know two of the versions were compatible with Saturn Twinsticks. I'll remember the names as soon as I get home and look at my collection. ;)

Twinstick support in GG2 didn't quite do it for me. In fact, I had a better twinstick setup for it when I made one myself.

Skipped out on Blaze, but I might look into this one.
