I have absolutely no details on what's new about them (other than the obvious new design (Mini-style controls)), but I assume they will be smaller and have bigger HDs. Hopefully there will be some other cool new features like wi-fi capabilities.

Wireless connections to a PC or Mac running iTunes would be great, but realistically I think all anyone should expect is another capacity boost and the redesign.

Apple to announce new iPods Monday

By Nick dePlume, Publisher and Editor in Chief

July 17, 2004 - Apple will announce new models of its standard 'white' iPods on Monday, Think Secret has learned.

According to sources, the company plans to unveil thinner, sleeker white iPods with a major announcement on Monday, July 19. While the enclosure will be the same general size as that of current iPods, it will be thinner; it will also have a new scroll wheel of different style and look.

Awesome.
Please have longer battery life!

Color screen would be nice...but ah well.
My cellphone has no color, is nice and small, and pretty basic...and I love it!

Make them all white and get rid of the silver back, that would be nice.

User replaceable batteries would get them my vote as well.

Well, that's lovely. I just bought a 20GB iPod a few days ago. I friggin love it.

Same here, I love mine too, but I would be a little angry if the new Ipods have 30 hours batteries, 40 gig HD, and cost $300. I realize that with electronics whatever you buy will soon become obsolete and shitty, but I hate to buy something at the end of its phase at full price.

:(

I think I'm going to buy one. Looks like they have a new shuffle option like the party mix, or just made it so it isn't buried in the menus.

I'm happier with the look of my current iPod (exactly the same as the one in God's Hand's photo), which I've had for 10 months - but I'll be pissed if these new ones are cheaper and have major new features.

That Shuffle Songs thing could easily be added to all iPods, with just a Firmware update, I'm sure. I mean they added new games, added support for AAC (which is a pretty big thing considering all you had to do was download new firmware) etc..

Finally a design that trumps the 2nd gen. I hated the line of buttons from 3rd, it was a step down from the more intuitive circle config. Gotta admit that while the UI was still more functional than anything else I tried, it was lacking in options. On-the-fly playlists please.

I will buy one to replace my 2nd, which has been an absolute soldier since Jan '02, serving as both inseperable audible friend and courier of "sensitive" data.

Bah, I say if it suits your needs then go for it, and ignore any technological advances. I don't think I'll ever have more than 15 gigs of good music, and the 10 hour battery is plenty.

I wonder if Jobs is getting pissed off that the last 2 revisions of his products have been released by magazines before he can announce them - first Time and now Newsweek. You'd think he'd just stop giving them photo ops early if he wants stuff to stay secret. Might as well announce them Monday at this point.

If this doesn't have wireless headphones+wireless data transfer, heads will roll.

There has been no evidence to support any wifi in them, so if they have it - its been a well kept secret.

Well there isn't going to be any press conference or anything for the new iPods, this was the main source of their unveiling. So I guess it doesn't really matter.

And the rumor now is a $50 price drop across the whole line. 20, 40, and 60 GB would be the lineup.

That would put the 4 GB Mini at $250 and the 20 GB at $250. I guess that would mean a $50 drop on the Mini as well.

What's the deal with wireless being the big new feature? If people are complaining about the battery life now, wireless (in WiFi or Bluetooth) definitely won't help matters.

see what I do, if I have a pair of pants or shorts that have a great pocket for my pod, and I know I'll be using them together a lot, is cut a little hole in the pocket so I can run the wire down my collar, into my pants and into the pod completely out of view. It helps that the current set of shitty headphone's I'm using has a really long cord. But this way the wire doesn't get snagged on shit if I'm doing yard work.

BTW, I know that they changed how the in-line remote works for the 3rd gens, but does it ever pull out? The remote for the 1st and 2nd always pull out half a milimeter, very easily, and the remote stops working after that. It makes the thing useless.

Just a list of evident changes:

Pic from http://www.engadget.com/ which is an absolutely awesome site if you're into consumer electronic news...

Wish List:
-better battery life
-lower price

If Apple can promise those 2 things, the new iPod will be mine the second it hits Canada!

I've heard the wheel will remain totally touch sensitive. It's not a click-wheel like the iPod mini. You tap it to command a button, and you hold it to scroll.

Thank god for that 4 year replacment plan i got at best buy. Oops my old ipod suddenly doesnt work anymore, time to upgrade.

That's what I did when the 3G iPods were released. Worked perfectly. Though there actually was a real problem with my 2G iPod, so maybe that helped.

I'm definitely not trying it again right now, though. Maybe I'll try it when the 5G iPods are released (as of this December, I'll still have 2 years left on my plan).

Oh god, I was THIS close to getting an iPod before the end of the month. Thank the lord this is happening now..I didn't expect new iPods till the end of the year. This looks nice..though looks aside, i'm most interested to see if they're doing anything with capacity/battery. I remember reading a few months ago that Apple had started ordering 60Gb mini-hds from Toshiba..

Seems like there will be no 60GB-models.

wow..they are actually making them cheaper. I'm surprised, and impressed. However, I think it's possible they're holding the 60GB-model as a surprise for their own announcement...the price drops on the 20 and 40GB models could well be to make way for a new high end model at 499. Getting rid of the 15GB model at the low end could also be indicative of a higher capacity model pushing the 40GB and 20GB models down the chain. We'll see on Monday..

12 hours battery life. The improvements nice and I probably will be jealous, but the changes are a lot less dramatic than the 2G to 3G jump and I wouldn't stop loving my current 40gig iPod.

Jobs would be so angry with this leak. It's just like what happened with the iMac, or was that TIME magazine?

I don't think the iPods are going up to 60gig, but that just means Apple may be using those drives for something else. mmm...I can't wait.

Why would Jobs be upset? This isn't a leak. This IS the annoucment. It was rumored that the annoucment wasn't going to come from Apple itself, but rather from an "out of the odrinary" place (meaning not a press conference or something). This fits the bill perfectly.
