Today Miyamoto spoke to a Japanese radio station. Here is the interview:

Organizer: Miyamoto San, hello. Thank you to return in our emission. You one are accustomed and we thank you. First of all, that would like to say to your fans today?

Miyamoto San: The question is very vast. Hé well, I hope that they are well, that they have fun with our games. It will be the case I think with our new creations. We sought new things, new directions. Simpler, more direct.

You find that today's games are too complicated?

I am made take a little with my own trap in this question since it is me which designed the controller of Nintendo GameCube! The ways of playing do not depend inevitably on the controller used. A complicated controller can accomodate a very simple and instinctive game to play. Mario Sunshine uses all the buttons but remains one of the most pleasant and easy to handle games. I will like to leave in this kind concept: accessibility. Nintendo always works in this direction.

You thus say that the controller of Game Cube is too complex?

Do not make me say what I did not say (laugh). I did not say that it was too complex, I think just that one can still improve it. And also ways of playing and the controller. But Mario sunshine is well adapted for the controller of the gamecube. The young people have much fun with this game, everyday in the world.

Why wait so many time before releasing a new mario? This wait is frustrating for the players.

Mario is a concept, it always was it since the departure. We always seek new ways of playing, to create something again. We are spirit to prepare something special for the Mario future, of never considering. You will understand, when you see it, that one cannot release such a game immediately. The new Mario game will surprise much people. Trust us. I think that it will open with a new way of having fun. There will be a new character at his side.

Will Mario 128 release on Révolution?

Yes, of course! It is not a surprise anymore, but it will be famous, obviously. It will not be the only surprise of the next year. We thought the Revolution compared to this new type of game. It is there for much in the design, like Mario 64 in its time. But we can't direct our new console only towards him! We work on expensive under development, very impressive products and pushing the interactivity very far. Games of a new era.

New Zelda delayed, it is not very good news...

... I stop you by saying to you that one needs that you have patience, really! Trust us! It will undoubtedly be the Zelda last such as one connait it today. I am occupied personally as, more as in Wind Waker. I will not invest myself any more as much as in that one. We want to make best Zelda ever left. Richest and more the melancholic person. We really improve it in a few months, much more than in one year one year ago! Because now that very finished, all that we make above is faster to build. Perhaps we have an idea of last minute but...

To release on Revolution?

Euh... It is announced on GameCube...

In any case, you like to preserve the mystery at Nintendo !

We will give much details soon. We like to make surprises, it is true (laughter). While our players sleep, we are digging us the head on our next concepts. But while they play, and well we play too!

It is what for you the future of the play-video, in 20 years?

The retroone (laughter). The consoles will reach a ceiling with the next generation, there, in a few months. The future will be perhaps the play with multiple possibilities and unlimited data, by Internet. If we do not limit the number of giga of a play - Internet in is able, not theoretical limit, why not imagine a true virtual universe, where all the players would cross? The play only at its beginnings, is compared of it with the cinema. But all the revolutions are not made that each 20 years I suppose! (laughter again).

Thank you for this discussion, Miyamoto San. With soon.

for the good of the english speaking world, I'll translate that properly. Look to this post for the edit in a few minutes.

Host: hello Mr. Miyamoto, thanks for coming on our show. Anyway, What would you like to say to your fans today?

Miyamoto: I'd like to say many things. Anyway, I hope they're well, that they're having fun with our games. I think this is the case with our newer creations. We've been looking for new things, new directions. Simpler, More direct.

Host: Do you find that games today are too complicated?

Miyamoto: I fall into my own trap here, because it was I that designed the Gamecube controller! The way a game is played is not only dependant on the controller used. Even a very complicated controller can be used to play the simplest and most instinctive of games. Mario Sunshine, for example, uses all the buttons, but remains one of the easiest and most enjoyable games to control. I'd like to continue in this direction. Ease of access. Nintendo is always working toward this goal.

Host: So, you are saying that the Gamecube controller is too complex?

Miyamoto: Don't put words into my mouth (laughs). I didn't say it was too complex, just that we can still improve upon it. The ways to play as well as the controller. But Mario Sunshine is very well adapted to the Gamecube controller. Young people have a lot of fun with this game all over the world.

Host: Why wait so long to release a new Mario game? This wait is no doubt very frustrating for players.

Miyamoto: Mario is a concept. He was since the very beginning. We're always looking for a new way to play, to create something thats new. We're currently working on something very special for the next Mario, something never seen before. You'll understand when you see it that (we can't release such a game right away?). The new Mario game will surprise a lot of people. Have faith in us. I think that we've come up with a new way to have fun. (this part of is tough to translate, so don't take it too literally) There will be a new character at his side.

Host: It will be released on the Revolution?

Miyamoto: Yes of course! This is no surprise. But it will be renamed of course. It won't be the only surprise of next year. We've designed the revolution around this new way of playing. It had alot to do with its conception. Like Mario 64 in its time. But we can't make the console revolve entirely around Mario! We're making games that are high budget, very impressive and that push interactivity very far. Games of a new era.

Host: The Zelda delay is not very good news...

Miyamoto: I will interupt you to say that you be patient. Have faith in us.This will no doubt be the last Zelda game as we know it today. I'm personally involved. Moreso than with Wind Waker. I will not invest myself more in a game than I am in this one. We are trying to make the best Zelda ever released. The richest and the most melancholy. We've really improved it in a few months, much more than in one year, one year ago. Because now that we're more or less finished, everything we add is much faster to create. We may have a last minute idea but...

Host: Will you defer it to Revolution?

Miyamoto: Um... Its announced for Gamecube.

Host: Anyway, you sure like your mysteries at Nintendo!

Miyamoto: We're going to be giving out a lot of details soon, but its true (laughs). Even while our players are sleeping, we're wracking our heads over our next ideas. But while they're playing, we play too!

Host: What do you see for the future of video games in 20 years?

Miyamoto: Retro gaming (laughs). Consoles will reach a barrier in the next generation, in a few months. The future might be games with multiple possibilities and unlimited data via the Internet. If we don't limit the number of gigabytes of a game, using the Internet which has no theoretical limit, why not imagine a virtual universe where all players sould cross paths? Games are still young compared to cinema. But revolutions only happen every 20 years I suppose! (laughs again)

Host: Thank you for speaking with us Mr. Miyamoto. But could you please tell us the secret to the revolution?

Miyamoto: Ok. Its Owls.

Holy broken English, Batman!

Good read, though it didn't really tell us anything significant that we didn't know.

Babelfish translation proves useless yet again. We can only guess what he actually said.

Any one here have any grasp at all of the French language? Please, give it a better translation.

I had this boring dream last night where I was looking up Zelda's release date on gamestop.com or something, and it was listed as July. And it made me very sad.

There will be a new character in Mario128? hmm... If only I knew the character is a true new character and not something like the Aquac (Spanish name for the water-pack)

Like to see a better translation of the bit where he talks about Mario 64. Seems like he is saying the Mario 128 is tied into Revolution as much as Mario 64 was on the N64. So it's going to demonstrate a new type of control, maybe even a new type of game.

Ah - I thought the article was in Japanese, I didn't bother to look.

I can translate French :D I'll work on the meaty parts of the interview first :)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why wait so long to release a new installment of Mario? The wait is frustrating players everywhere...

Mario is and always has been a concept title from his birth. We are always looking for new ways of playing with him, manipulating him, to create something new and unique. We're in the midst of preparing something special for his future, something you've never seen before. You'll understand when you first see it why we can't quite release it right away. The new Mario game will surprise many people. Give us the benefit of the doubt. I think we'll present you with a new way to have fun. There's even a new character by his side.

Mario 128 will be released for Revolution then?

Yes, of course! It's no surprise, but of course we will rename it, obviously. That won't be the only surprise of next year though. We based the Revolution around this new type of game. Mario 128 played a large role in the Revolution's conception, much like Mario 64 in it's time. But we won't just be focusing on Mario. We're working on some very impressive games which push interactivity to the max. Games of a new era.

The new Zelda, it's not really good news that...

Please allow me to interrupt you by saying that you will have to be patient, really. This will be, without a doubt, the last Zelda game as you know it in its present form (Maybe he means the concept?). I worked on it personally, moreso than Wind Waker! I haven't invested nearly as much time into any game recently as I have this one - and I won't ever put this much time into a game again (That's the gist of what he said, basically, he's working really fucking hard on TP). Our goal was to make the best Zelda game ever. The most rich/satisfying and melancholy. We've really improved it in just a few months. Everything's coming together much quicker. We may have some last minute ideas...

You're going to move it to Revolution?

No, it is a Gamecube title.

In any case, you want to preserve the air of mystery around Nintendo?

We will be revealing many details soon. It's true, we do like surprises (laughs). While our gamers are sleeping, we're busy thinking up new ideas. But while they're playing - we're playing as well.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll get to the rest when I can...

That's actually what he says. I know because I have a Spanish translation which is better than the English one.

I have faith in both Mario and Miyamoto. Both have been in creative slumps but I have a hunch (and I hope) that their Revolution work will astound us.

What? Pikmin and Nintendogs aren't creative now?

Thanks for the translation edit, that made a lot more sense. I guess you loose something when you go from Japanese to French to English!

Definitely. Some of the things didn't make much sense in French translated from Japanese (i.e. "This is the last Zelda game as you know it."), so I doubt they make any more sense now that they've been translated three times over :p

This sounds fake to me. Those aren't the types of questions Japanese interviewers would ask.

Can anyone source the original Japanese version?

This sounds fake to me.

That crossed my mind as well, some of the responses seem a bit out of character.

Do you find that today's games are too complex?

I might be setting a trap for myself by responding to this since I was the one who designed the Gamecube controller. I find that the 'methods of playing' a game do not depend heavily on the controller used. For example - A complicated controller can be properly implented and used in a simple/instinctive game. Mario Sunshine used all of the Gamecube controller's buttons but remains one of the easiest, most responsive games to control. I would like to continue with this concept - the ease of access, the ease of use. Nintendo is always working on this.

So are you saying that you find the Gamecube controller to be too complex?

Don't start putting words in my mouth (laughs). I didn't say I thought it was too complex, I just said that we can always improve on it. Improve ways of playing as well as improving the design of the controller. But I do believe that Mario Sunshine is well configured for the Gamecube controller. Kids enjoy themselves everyday with the game, all over the world.

Please allow me to interrupt you by saying that you will have to be patient, really. This will be, without a doubt, the last Zelda game as you know it in its present form (Maybe he means the concept?).

I interpret this in two ways:

1. Zelda Revolution will be a drastic change due to the interface and controller.

2. Miyamoto:"Fuck you gamers. I'm going back to cel shading."

My full translation is up there now. But because I'm an attention whore, I'll paste it here too.

Well it's going to be bloody easy to tell if it's fake or not, assuming reports of seeing Mario 128 in 2 weeks are true.

He doesn't really say anything.. It's like Kojima saying 'I'm in for a MacChicken now'' and people replying with 'OMG MGS4 TEH PWN!'.. or something.. or not

never mind

As was said before, the new character at his side comment could have been mangled in the Japanese to French translation, so I wouldn't take it as gospel yet (that is, assuming the interview is even legit).

I worked on it personally, moreso than Wind Waker! I haven't invested nearly as much time into any game recently as I have this one - and I won't ever put this much time into a game again (That's the gist of what he said, basically, he's working really fucking hard on TP)

What the hell does he mean by that? Suerly they wont stop making Zelda games.
"as we know it today," pal. So they're going to change the formula.

Its far too early for me to get worried about the Zelda news now, we've yet to see what exactly is so special about revolution and if its something as special as Miyamoto is making it soun then any change in the series would be welcomed, but I would prefer to see Zelda stick as close as possible to its roots. Playign through each of the 3D Zelda's has been so much fun. OoT, MM and WW have been some of the best games from the last two generations. If Nintendo decide to change Zelda's winning formua it might be a bad thing, but its too early to judge since we have only seen so little of Nintendo's next gen plans.

Hi I want to know what user Paladin of 1080up.org knows. I ask because he and others apparently know something but the MODS at the IGN boards aren't letting any topics arise from what he knows. Did Paladin come here and tell anybody since he also posts here I believe.

Are you talking about Paladin69 or something? I remember him from a long time ago.

He doesn't know shit. Though he was a nice poster who usually wrote well thought out posts.

All I bloody want is a good, simple Mario game. Super Mario Bros 3 is not one of my all time favourites because it was incredibly innovative, or "fresh", but rather because it was a fun game.

So basically we're just supposed to wait and see.

That's news.

I didn't get a fake vibe from reading that, but who knows. The comments are vague and uninformational enough to sound true to me.

It's always wait and see with Nintendo

Thats why it is definately not good to get ones hopes up, even though its tough with all the rumors and speculation that goes on around here.

There was a Kaentai69 here long ago. Anyone remember him?
