New Pope elected. Young (76), and from South America. Takes Pope Name "Francis"

His social justice stance is the Catholic Church's stance on social justice.

Which is uncomfortably progressive for some.

He seems much more concerned than the last pope. He's gonna openly talk about it I hope.

I'm a fan of his 'all people deserve a basic standard of living' policy but I strongly oppose his 'gays are the devil' policy.

Same.

Modern Catholics are pretty Left minded apart from the obvious.

I mean, have you ever been to Mass? The welfare for the poor is the very first concern brought up in the prayer after communion.

Anyways, the new Pope rejects liberation doctrine.

Ehh I think they do it more out of an abundance of ego. They see themselves as above the rest of South America. They complimented me on my Spanish (which the call "Castellano") when I was there, and I explained that with my proximity to Mexico growing up, I learned a lot from friends...to which they tutted, expressing that Mexican Spanish and their Spanish were totally different languages (they're not at all).
But there still is a certain second class tension towards more Indigenous peoples and immigrants. This is a common problem in Latin America.

As a Practicing Catholic I'll give my first takes, because I think some people might be curious to hear our perspective (You might not be, but ah well)

Well, it's huge to see an Argentinian Pope, one of the Italian Cardinals (sorry I forget which one) had said earlier that they (The Conclave) need to look at our Brothers outside of Europe, particularly in Latin America.

Pope Francis I is likely not because of Francis of Assissi, but more likely Francis Xavier who was a great Jesuit and missionary.

Also, this is kind of surprising, this was the first time a new Pope recites the prayers with the people on his first appearance, Our Father, Haily Mary and Glory.

Another take was his refusal to wear the red cape (I don't remember the proper name right now, Sorry!) in contrast to both Benedict XVI and John Paul II, who both wore it. It looked like he just wanted to be very humble about this.

Thank you those of you who aren't exactly of my faith who are being respectful, haha even some of those jokes have made me laugh quite a bit. This is, quite a historic moment.

Thank you for taking you time writing fellow GAFfer.

He also seemed a very humble person. I'm not someone who goes to the church on sunday or... ever to be honest.

But I do like the story and I do respect all religions. I have my faith but most of the things I try to find myself as I gather questions, on my own (I understand it's not the best way, but there's a chance to change this).

This surely is an hystoric moment

The one thing that needed to have the new pope, was that change

I really liked his speech even if it was short, it hit the point quickly and was a good sign of things to come

Thanks for sharing your thoughts

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
As someone who recently has been trying to go back to the church and go to mass on a somewhat weekly basis I'm pleased with the pick!

Even though I have no religious beliefs whatsoever, I think this is a good move!

I have no idea whether or not he will be living up to his personal views, but methinks his beliefs are an improvement. He takes a sober standpoint (not wearing his pope-scarf etc.) so yeah, good for him!

Bring it on, change!

Religious institutions should be respected,

Not really. There's no use in the modern world for an institution whose sole purpose is to promote faith and ideology over facts and reason.

This is such a silly parade if you consider what a pope is supposed to represent. If it didn't terrifyingly affect so much in the world, it'd be laughable that this is even a thing in the 21st century.

Your modern open-mindedness is truly something to be respected.

I'm pretty certain a Quebecer did that. Nobody in France writes "merde" as "marde". Anyway, that's another topic.

Grats to the new Pope.

Cardinal Ouellet was more keen at covering up abuse by other priests iinside Quebec than serving justice.

I am happy that Ouellet did not become Pope.

Who was the youngest Pope ever? Pope John Paul II was only 58 at the start of his run. I am not Catholic, but I was a pretty big "fan" of his.

EDIT:

Or of modern times I guess I should say...

Even as a muslim i think that Pope John Paul II was a awesome dude. Million times better than that german dude.

Not the thread for this.

Abortion and euthanasia

Cardinal Bergoglio has invited his clergy and laity to oppose both abortion and euthanasia.[8]

Homosexuality

He has affirmed church teaching on homosexuality, though he teaches the importance of respecting individuals who are gay or lesbian.[citation needed] He strongly opposed legislation introduced in 2010 by the Argentine Government to allow same-sex marriage, calling it a "real and dire anthropological throwback".[9] In a letter to the monasteries of Buenos Aires, he wrote: "Let's not be naive, we're not talking about a simple political battle; it is a destructive pretension against the plan of God. We are not talking about a mere bill, but rather a machination of the Father of Lies that seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God." He has also insisted that adoption by gay and lesbian people is a form of discrimination against children. This position received a rebuke from Argentine president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, who said the church's tone was reminiscent of "medieval times and the Inquisition".[10]

Relations with the Argentine government

On April 15, 2005, a human rights lawyer filed a criminal complaint against Bergoglio, accusing him of conspiring with the junta in 1976 to kidnap two Jesuit priests, whom he, as superior of the Society of Jesus of Argentina in 1976, had asked to leave their pastoral work following conflict within the Society over how to respond to the new military dictatorship, with some priests advocating a violent overthrow. Bergoglio's spokesman has flatly denied the allegations. No evidence was presented linking the cardinal to this crime.[11]

Lol, people were saying that in the 17th century too.

As an American, I have always viewed Argentinians as true South Americans and not as displaced Euros, and I appreciate your fine alpaca products.
Thanks lol
