I'm pretty certain a Quebecer did that. Nobody in France writes "merde" as "marde". Anyway, that's another topic.

Grats to the new Pope.

I know that, i live there. ;)

But the way he wrote his post, it's like he thinks that because of the language bs going in Quebec(and believe me, many of us also think its bullshit. Our government is just full of dumbasses), it's not surprising someone from there did that, even though anyone could do that shit.

Anyway.... moving on. Not the point of this thread like you said.

But they're not hispanic, at least they don't consider themselves as such

EDIT: I don't think Latino is even a good description of Spaniards either

Nowadays the term "Latino" is used for refer the Latin Americans, even though they are not the "original" Latins. And despite that Spaniards, Portuguese, French and Italians are Latin Europeans, they're not normally called "Latins", much less "Latinos".

"Latinos", coming from "Latinoamericanos" refers to all the Latin Americans, and of course does not include the Spaniards.

"Hispanics" refer to everyone who has Spanish as their native language.

So, Spaniards are not Latinos (not in the "modern" sense of the word) but they are Hispanics.

PS.- And Spaniards do consider themselves Hispanic, as the 12th of October they celebrate the Hispanics' Day.

So I've been reading about popes and such...

I was looking up the Argentinian antipope, pope Alexander IX, and all I found was this twitter:

https://twitter.com/itsamarty

Which... I guess this guy's really into minor-league Catholocism (AAA Catholocism? I dunno).

And then this:

Link
https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!searchin/alt.recovery.catholicism/Alexander$20IX/alt.recovery.catholicism/M6gPW2bhWlk/GjF4EvnnLJcJ

Which seems to be anti-pope fan-fiction?

Seems like a good, experienced choice coming from a region that will be happy for the recognition. Slipping past the media-favorite names like our own Dolan, O'Malley, and the assumed-easy-in Italians. Demographically, it is entertainingly convenient that he is of specifically Italian extraction, but not unexpected that a South American might be white in general.

So much trolling and disrespect in this thread... oh well, I guess freedom of speech before anything.

It bothers me a bit for the only reason that, no matter what people believe or not, everyone should show at least some respect to each other. Nothing else.

While some of the trolling is over the top, you are damn right about freedom of speech before anything. The whole reason the church is in the shape that it exists today is because the early church suppressed the ideas of many of the followers of Christ and called them heretics. They then made a consorted effort to destroy knowledge and individuals who did not conform to their ideas. So yes, go freedom of speech!

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
About to talk to one of my best friends about this. He was born in Peru and has dual citizenship with Italy. He's lived in the US for years though, and studied to be a Catholic priest at the seminary in Rome.

Figured he would have a good perspective on all of this.

Nothing new around here. Us Catholics have tough skin though. Turn the other cheek and all...

centuries of guilt and corporal punishment tend to do that, plus the liberal policy towards alcohol. Of course it did other things. Nuns for example.

This was an interesting choice. Of course an Argentinean. The bridge between Europe and the new world, plus not so uppity as to go on an inspired reformation, hence his troubled past. So is this guy going to be a controller, or will someone else be pulling his strings. It's so disappointing to be looking at the Church with such cynical eyes, but this is where we are.

They also have science department and such. Yeah church deserve critiques and all. I just wish people would do it with respect, but I guess it's too much to ask.

It only bothers me because there are protected classes on the forum. I'm over it though. I just ignore it. The people that think they are being edgy and clever, aren't.

I believe that his views on homosexuality, abortion, and euthanasia will not affect policy. But if he focuses on poverty and equality, I hope those views do affect policy.

Criticizing the Catholic CHurch is nothing new. I just ignore it. I'm sorry but I find it more surprising when people are respectful on the internet than not.

Plus, if that's their opinion let them have it. I mean all their doing is bragging about their own ignorance.

I think it's crazy that this guy is such a humble, humble man because...he cooks his own meals. That blew my mind that someone actually said that on television with a straight face. Medieval times out of touch.
