Much better character designs than SO3.

And this character is going to rock, his expression is hilarious (the guy in the back).

kinda bland. maybe plays better but after SO3 It's kind of hard to anticipate anything from Triace.

Those hands are so PS1. :lol Heh, i'm just kidding. That character in the background on the last two pics look interesting. I wonder if that expression is perpetual.

If the game plays as well as some people are saying, it should be one to keep my eye on.

The game is reminecesent of Dew Prism and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles in style.

I'm gonna pick it up when its released this week.

Will Bebpo be getting this?

Yep. I mean I think Tri-ace is really creative and is trying to make huge rpgs with great gameplay systems...just that they keep failing :P But hopefully they're learning from their mistakes and RS will be top-notch.

In the end though, Digital Devil Saga 2 gets priority over everything ;) so I won't be part of the RS disussion for a week or two.

And please give us impressions on that one as well ;)

I'm getting used to the visual style... graphics are very good though, better so far than pretty much anything else on PS2 (except maybe SO3). Battle system makes it or breaks it for me.

I really really like the style and the graphics, especially in motion, sometimes i wonder if it wasnt CG. Much better than square's new romancing saga with chibi characters and huge heads.

I am a little concern how they're handle so many playable characters, story wise, and if they'll all feel unique in battle.

Definitely liking the looks of the game more and more though.

Indeed, looked similar for me since it was shown for the first time.

OOOOOH. Nice; if they bring this over, and this is packed in as a free pre-order bonus, I am very interested. Is Sakuraba doing the OST for this?

How are they "much better" than anything? They're freaking terrible.

Still, the game itself seems interesting. Maybe I can mind the characters.

Don't mistake design for style. While I like both the style and the design of the characters, I can see how people can dislike the style in which the characters are drawn and but not the actual design of the character.

I really dig how it looks, as someone said, reminds of Dew Prism/Threads of fate.

It's cute, and the costume design for the characters is nifty, works for me.

And Iwadare rocks, Sakuraba is nice and all, but... I mean, he's freaking everywhere.

I love the watercolor-ish look of this game..

I'm pretty sure it has a chance of being released in the west..

i would give the odds as 1:1. not that i've heard anything, but SO3 sold like 250K at least. it doesn't take a genius to figure out squenix will put this out here.

Unconfirmed scores from Dengeki PS2:

Radiata Stories (PS2, Square Enix): 95 / 95 / 90 / 95
Another Century's Episode (PS2, Banpresto): 80 / 75 / 80 / 70
Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner 2 (PS2, Atlus): 90 / 85 / 85 / 80

Hell yeah, good to see the Japanese gaming press giving good reviews. Say what you want about Famitsuu, I don't remember any time they were REALLY off base, except I hated Vagrant Story (ducks).

The music on the site sounds really good... I wasn't excited for this game AT ALL, but it may end up surprising the hell out of me.

I looked at some of the screenshots as well. The towns and the such are really beautiful. I guess since all I've seen were battle screenshots, I wasn't too keen on the game. The game's maps really remind me of BOF IV in style. The only thing I'm not too keen on right now is the design of the characters, but everything else may make up for that.

This game is AWESOME

It's hard to believe any of the Star Ocean people worked on this game as it's a complete 180.

--Light, humourous, fun story in the vein of Grandia 1 / Shadow Hearts
--Nicely written dialogue. I haven't laughed this much since SH2 and RS may be even funnier.
--Amazing visuals. This is easily the best looking rpg on the market. Backgrounds are dreamlike and everything outside of battles runs at a rock-solid 60fps. The world art is just gorgeous.
--Music is excellent. Thank god for no Sakuraba, Iwadare is putting out his best here.
--Cutscene direction is very good. Camera angles, pacing, using musical cues; everything here is done just right.
--Insanely polished, even the menus are fantastic. Easy to access full maps with almost no loading.
--Main character is great. No angst, no quietness; no he's just a kinda dumb funny kid.
--Great voice actors: Main guy Jack is played by the actress who does Naruto in Naruto. Jack's role almost seems like it was written for her as Jack basically = Naruto.
--Clothing: Looks really impressive and I look forward to equipping many pieces over the game.
--Did I mention that the game is really funny? ;)

stuff that I'm not 100% blown away by:
--Battle system is really simple but maybe that's a good thing. You don't have any control over your cpu characters at all so it's just 1 person fighting. The fighting is pretty much just block the enemy's attack and counter or attack on your own and hope the enemy doesn't block and counter you. The lock-on works good, but when you're not locked on it can be a little frantic between enemies. Even the stats are simple (attack, defense, dodge, luck). I think going simple is a good idea to counterbalance the problems from SO3.
--Loading into and out of battles. Not bad, not good. Loading everywhere else is great.
--Time system: Kinda like a mini-shenmue. This is cool except when you looking for a NPC and they're not at home so you have to look all around town for them ^^;; You can rest at inns to kill time.

Lastly as a note for importers the text never pauses. Cutscenes go like movies with no stops, but even if you just hit circle while looking at a desk the text will disappear on it's own in a second or two. So be warned if you're a slow reader.

Put about 2:30 hours into it and so far I can see where the Jpn magazine scores are coming from. IMO this is such a high-polished high presentation product that it should be up there with FFXII and KH2 as one of SE's huge titles.

PS. Tri-ace sucks, please tell me who 'really' made this game :P

Wow, everything sounds fantastic! Can't wait to play it!

Backgrounds are dreamlike and everything outside of battles runs at a rock-solid 60fps.

Wait, are you saying that battles are straight up 30 fps or that they run at 60 fps but with some slowdown?

Also, does the game support 480p like SO3 did?

Sonova bitch...

Here I was thinking it would be no problem (based on the dialog presented in the screens), but a setup like that will be problematic for me. If I get caught on anything (which I most certainly will), I'll be thinking about it while the next bits show up and I'll end up falling way behind. I guess I'll have to wait for the US release (which I'll have to f*cking import -grumble-).

Oh well, that likely means better presentation...

Thanx for the impressions bebpo - the game sounds amazing!!

Let me get it straight - the game has cinema-like cutscenes like FF and not the irritating SO3-like cutscenes?

Boo!

Anyways, Tri-Ace does not suck :p

Star Ocean 3 was going good until that stupid storyline plot twist. God, that's like the worst plot twist ever. I stopped playing at that point.

...but Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean 2 are still amazing games, which deserve your respect, especially VP.

Battles run around 30 but slowdown is normal anytime someone attacks. It's kinda wierd because there can be a cutscene with like 5+ characters and it'll never drop from 60fps but a one on one battle will have slowdown at 30fps.

The game supports 480p and 16:9 displays.
