I can definitely see playing this and soaking up the atmosphere "in motion", but screens make it look very strange.

Does this have a custom character creation or what? And if so, can you make your character not look like a douchbag?

The lighting is pretty good. I like how the explosions cast shadows...

...but the car headlights don't, unfortunately. :P

But some of the interiors look butt ugly as they're unfinished, and the characters like the women walking outside look horrible. Technically they are high poly...and the lighting on them is great...but the art...ouch!

Online multiplayer may own us all if it's done right.

If they had a city wide CTF mode...I'd crap my pants in anticipation.

i think these screens look like shit but at the same time i read this from the teamxbox preview:

The visuals are shaping up, although we’ve been told they are only at about 60% in the build we saw. That means no depth of field, no anti-aliasing, and stuttering framerate. The final game will hit 30 fps, which is impressive when you consider the size of Southern Cross and the amount of activity.

Well, some of those screens have definitely some AA on them and the framerate can't make a difference in screens.

:p

If I were to use GTA for the PlayStation 2 as a benchmark, certainly this can be considered a graphical improvement. Whether it qualifies as a real next-generation jump remains to be seen, but these screens suggest enough muscle to show a lot on screen when you play this game. But that's not saying much considering the jump between the PS2 and the 360, is it?

Xbots expect a credible GTA competitor for the 360 out of this game, but I fear it will have all of GTA's weaknesses and few of its strengths. It, like its more credible competitor, may be a jack of trades and a master of none, and it may well lack the (predictable, for some even lousy) satire and feel in its quest for 'respect' and all that jazz. That's maybe where this game is headed when THQ releases it for the Xbox 360; it's a socially tactless, even atrocious game where you run over bitches, shoot cops and flash your underwear to anyone in eye's view, with absolutely no real value as a game compared to what people think GTA did for its genre. You can call me Jack Thompson for all I care, but that's what comes off for me about this game in particular.

I hate the characters standing stance in this game...but that's not the only reason I'm skipping this game, never a fan of GTA, nothing new here either...
looking forward to crackdown.

From what i've seen it's very customizable as far as you character goes.

And to all the haters, this game doesn't belong in the same category as all those other thug ripoff games. From the gameplay they've shown, it seems like it will be analagous to GTA the way Splinter Cell is to MGS. Just as SC was better in almost every concievable way, so might SR. ;-) But seriously it looks like it might be good enough to develope a name for itself.

there is just something really...stupid about the look of this game. It looks like the generic ass renders you used to see advertising 3D art schools in the back of NextGen magazine.

Its the lighting and the bland color pallet... the textures arnt very impressive.

Looks very good, IMO. Though, I agree with the sentiment that all of the thug-sims are getting a bit too much now. I want a smart villain game, where you can still be a thug, but it's more about making smart choices to create your own criminal empire...not one that is totally pre-scripted through a fairly linear tree of decisions, events, and story-points/cinematics. I want to play a game where I can orchestrate a fairly complex heist. Personally, I'm looking forward to Crackdown a bit more, but this is going to be cool just for multi.

looks bad? seriously, just look at this. the lighting. the shadows (on everything), the textures, the background detail. its waaaaay better looking then anything else of the same scale. i'm not a fan of the generic as hell gangster theme, but technically, it looks solid to me (for 1st gen 360)

You people are crazy saying this looks bad, its leagues ahead of everything in its genre.

The interior of the thrift store is dodgy, i'll give you that.

THUG simulators NOT NAMED Grand Theft Auto NEED TO DIE. I wish that they would put THE PLANES back in the game as like downloadable content for those of us who have a 360/HD (since thats why they were taken out apparently).

I liked GTA for the same reason I liked Mario 64, Pilot Wings, and to a lesser extent goldeneye, it let me explore/play with in a sandbox world.

I mean who here wouldnt like GTA Tokyo game :D

Hmm. I guess having only GTA wouldn't be so bad. I don't really care that GTA's popular, but the market is being saturated with shitty thug games, and that's what's pissing me off. We need more sandbox games in other non-urban settings.

I Agree, it's kind of like the figher syndrome of the 90s. One game makes a splash, and then we have a bunch of copycats. When what makes gta special, (to me at least), is the sum of its parts, and a lot of that comes from the funny writing kinda satire in the game, something that seems lost on these copycats.

Metal gear had *somewhat* similiar impact, or I at least notice getting pissed off more by half assed "stealth" moments in games now, then before it came out...

None of these cover the problems with this games visual style...... It looks horrid. :-/

Why does that blue car look like its roof is reflecting the yellow lines on the road? o.o;;

Looks great to me, pisses on GTA and the amount of damage, physics (explosions AND clothing) and obviously the online mode are all extremely appealing.

"Sloppy Seconds Thrift Store" could be right out of GTA, though I guess that just makes them copycats?

You didn't really get an idea of the humour of GTA until you got into the game, the screens and videos always highlight the actual gameplay rather than the humour.

No about 100 other things do. But hey the physics and online play will tide me over fine untill GTA next gen.

:)

You people have way too low standards. The Xbox 1 can almost provide graphics like this. And you are embracing this so-called next-gen game.

The PS1 could probably provide graphics like GTA3 but it would be fucked if you decided to move or drive a car or crash into anything.

Background/environment textures look pretty nice, but the character models look really strange and awkward, cars look ugly as hell. Plus just give up with the thug theme already, there's like 100,000 games on the market that do this exact same thing, and yet none has even come close to topping the GTA series.

Yeah but, Im sorry have to say this. This is a perfect example of an o.k. engine and bad art/design direction. This world looks dead and pale. Getting a game world to look as alive as the one in the GTA series is quite an accomplishment. And these guys are obviously nowhere near that.
