New School Music Thread

DeafTourette

Perpetually Offended
In this thread, we're taking music from. 2000 - Present

Post your favorite songs in the last 25 years... Any and all genres because I refuse to believe there's no good music out there past 1999

I'll go first:

And I like the cover of this song as well

This really reminded me of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song and New York Undercover

Despite being the furthest thing from my wheelhouse I gave Sabrina Carpenter a shot after hearing a couple of her catchy tunes on the radio, ended up making a little six track / 18min playlist from Short N' Sweet. At first it's just corny, straightforward pop music with some catchy lines but most of the tracks have some interesting little melodic lines and runs in them that kinda subvert expectation. Even the autotune feels creatively and fittingly implemented as opposed to just being a blanket application to correct bad singing. A pleasant surprise!

I've been listening to Alice In Chains a lot, so a peppy little palette cleanser is good sometimes, lol..

...this kinda flows nicely and "Coincidence" is a good finisher.

As mitch1971 mitch1971 mentioned above, these modern albums are dynamically compressed up the wazoo for Streaming, Hi/Std-Res Download & CD; and so is this (it has a DR of 6, when a similar pop album in the 80s or early very 90s would have been 11-14). So I need to get a vinyl copy at some point (while the format has less dynamic range, they're usually cut with greater competence out of both care and necessity, and more often than not they use a less compressed deliverable of the master).

"It Takes A Lot To Know A Man" | Damien Rice - My Favourite Faded Fantasy (2014)

"Up All Night", "Strangest Thing" & "Thinking Of A Place" | The War On Drugs - A Deeper Understanding (2014)

"My Name Is Ruin" | Gary Numan - Savage: Songs From A Broken World (2017)

"Breathe Me" | Sia - Colour The Small One (2004)
...also from the Six Feet Under finale.

What the hell happened to dynamic range in recording?
Everything is made to be played through a phone, or in ear headphones at most.

Who still has a big speaker set up?

Old people, that's who.

Just like video, if it's all on a 5" phone screen, who cares about quality?

They used to play The Beatles on crappy mono record players, but it was still recorded with dynamic range.

Music is still recorded in state-of-the-art studios. Film is still recorded digitally in 8 -16k. People care.

Kinda cheating as it's John Mayer channelling Journeyman/24 Nights-era Clapton & Toto alongside Greg Phillinganes, complete with a CBS Nice Price sticker on the cover,...but it did release in 2021!
