Well, if it's the latter it looks like Sonic Team has a better Model 2 emu up and running than AM2.

They did, that's one of the reasons why they included Bean and Bark in Fighters Megamix, but not Sonic & Co. Even though Bean wasn't a purely original creation (he was adapted from Dynamite Dux), those were still "their" characters.

Actually, I remember there being some concerns about pulling it off on the Saturn, especially bits like Amy's Flying Carpet level.

It likely would've just turned out like VF2/FV with 2D parallax backgrounds. Amy's stage would've been redesigned to be stationary like Shun Di's in VF2.

I hope they removed the load delay when time-warping in Sonic CD... but then again, it's probably just emulated. =/
