New Star Wars RTS

Title: Star Wars Empire At War
Developer: Petroglyph
Release: Fall 2005

Not much is known about it yet, but it will feature ground and space battles in a RTS setting. Apparently it will take place two years before A New Hope with some ROTS crossover.

Has Petroglyph done anything before? Anyone ever heard of them?

Yeah, lots of ex-Westwood there. It could be good.

You gotta be kinding me. I can tell you what this game is going to be about, Spice Harvesters and Jedi rushes. If Lucas wants to do a really good RTS they should have went to the guys who did Hegemonie(sp).

Some pictures... I love and still play Galactic Battlegrounds every once in a while...

2D and especially 3D RTS (HOMEWORLD) have moved far beyond Westwood era RTS. Could certainly be good though.

The team is basically the entire original Westwood team, all back in Las Vegas where they started. I think the last game they made was C&C Tiberian Sun. This is not the team that made Red Alert 2 and Generals (and now working on Red ALert 3).

If its full 3d space battles then count me in...cant be sure if it is or not from those shots.

Homeworld with turbolasers = sex.

Is the engine being built specifically for this game, or is it a licensed engine? (Galactic Battlegrounds was little more than a graphic mod for Age of Empires, and it suffered as a result).

There's a feature on it (and other upcomign SW games) in the new CGW

here are some of the interesting bits:

20+ worlds to conquer
non-linear campaign
bonuses to owning planets
income from planets
space combat on 2d plane
multiple targets to select from on ships (target shields/hull/etc)
if you lose too many troop transports in space you have to wait for reinforcements
troops get xp
troops on planet are persistent (have to think about reinforcement)
hero units (vader is example)
passive characters grant bonuses (mon motha is example, more income)
there is base building and space stations
custom engine (better than generals engine it is claimed)
joe bostic leading project (dune 2, c&c)

ugh, Westwood hasn't ever made a balanced RTS, ever. And balance is by far the most important factor in the longevity of an RTS. This game is just going to be another craptacular part of the Star Wars lineup.

I can't stress this enough: I want a SRPG with the Gladius Engine running int the Star Wars universe. And I want that ASAP!

Well, this game looks sexy too.

Homeworld has been out for years and yet we still have to suffer through 2D Space Combat. I thought Homeworld did a great job of making 3D combat very easy to control and offered so many strategic options. I was kind of excited about this game until I read the Space Combat on a 2D Plane thing.

Yeah i love HW (more than HW2, the fighters were so much cooler in the original) but i miss the frenetic laser fire of the star wars universe.

Shame this is only 2d.

Rebellion + Force Commander + Westwood = this

I'll be honest, I loved Star Wars: Rebellion. Force Commander sucked though.

tiberian sun and espically ra2 were pretty balanced.
