New Super Monkey Ball? - Monkey Ball Adventures (PS2)

First time I've seen this...

Talk about unexpected - the next instalment of Sega's spherical simian simulation will go by the name Monkey Ball Adventures and is being developed by Lego Star Wars creators Traveller's Tales.

It's story-based and not unlike a platform game in design. To wit: there are five themed worlds and different balls to discover, including a wooden one that lets AiAi, MeeMee and chums roll over water. There will also be sections where the monkeys get to fly over to new areas, just like the Monkey Target mini-game. Speaking of which, a bunch of party games and puzzles are being chucked in for good measure.

It's not too clear what formats it's heading for at the moment. We know it's on its way to PlayStation 2 and PSP though - the Official PlayStation 2 Magazine broke the story - and we reckon that GameCube is a reasonable bet. Sega support the system more than most publishers do and it's also where the series began, lest we forget.

Why is Sega so afraid of supporting the console that's given them most of their sales? I don't see why they wouldn't make this a Cube game.

That being said, I don't want a Monkey Ball platformer.

Well it was unveiled in a PS2 mag, but not officially announced yet. I can see them releasing it on all 3 current platforms like Sonic Riders.

I wouldn't really care what platform it was on, but I think the Cube controllers are really the best for the Monkey Ball games..

Different ball types? Talk about overcomplicating something... This game was so great because of it's simplisity! I'm guessing they will also water down the difficulty of the game. /sigh

it's an ADVENTURE.

Between this, the shoddy MBC ports & the "eh" DS version Sega sure will kill any buzz the series had for it going into SMB3. :lol

Ahhhrrrrghrghrgrhrgrhrghrgrh!

I daresay it'll be good if it's from handled with care like Lego Star Wars, but goddamnit Sega.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Traveller's Tales make technically polished but poorly playing pieces of shit! The exact opposite of what Monkey Ball is about.

SMB3 better still turn up on Revolution at launch.

sounds crap

well, the game concept would've sounded wonderful if amusement vision was doing it, because everything they do is wonderful naturally. traveller's tales bring the puke.

I'm reserving judgement till I see video

This is one game that should NOT be expanding into other genres.

Seriously, a fucking adventure game about monkeys in balls? Sega, you suck. Learn to make new games.

There is no better platform than GameCube for Monkey Balls and no worse than PS2 tbh ^^. I hope Traveller's Tales doesn't fuck it up, because it's such a great franchise. When I look at games such as Sonic 3D Blast... yuck.

Give the fucking thing chance.

Jees!

If it aint broke don't fix it?

The things there were talking about doing in SMB3 sounded fucking great - LAN play, being able to control the spin of the ball, a return to the totally skill-based courses of the first game. Then it goes AWOL, and in it's place we get lazy ports, the bastard-child DS version, and now this by a different developer and one with a dodgy track-record.

The next game with monkeys I want to see is SMB3! If they moved it so Amusement Vision could take advantage of Revolution's tilt-controls and LAN/net-play then Sega will be forgiven all their sins with the franchise in recent years.

I'm not feeling too good about this one, right off the bat. Not by Amusement Vision? Not on Gamecube--or X360? (ie. the consoles with awesome analog stick precision) It's enough to make me a bit nervous, for sure.

Of course, but then this isn't SMB3 is it, it's something else that... might just work.

Let's see some more concrete info and most importantly vids on this before we start spouting how shit it is.

the basic idea of turning it into a platformer, i like. the PS2 does not have lot of real platformer, it's mostly 3rd person shooting/slashing platformer wanabe. I would personally like to see genki stop making night racer and give us a new super magnetic neo.

traveler tale? why not.

PS2? make sense, allow the serie to sell while making SM3 specially for revolution controler.

fuck sega? com'on some of you need to take a good hot chocolate and go to bed early tonight, you are tired.

I predict a nice-looking engine, with monkeys in balls traversing dumbed-down Monkey Ball-style levels, with simplified controls and puzzles a retard could solve. In other words, something more conventional and accessible.

I only have a problem with it if SMB3 was shelved in favour of this, and this is the direction the series is now going to go in. SMB was such a pure skill-driven game I'd hate to think we won't be seeing a 3rd one, as I think there was still a lot they could do with it.

If it's missing from Sega's Revolution line-up, then I think it's pretty safe to say it's dead :(

for the record, monkey ball did not start on the GameCube. There was a Monkey Ball, long, long before the Cube even existed. The Cube however was fortunate enough to recieve a conversion of the arcade game for launch.

AV should bring Ollie King to GCN as well. :)

Well, it's going to use the exact same engine as Super Monkey Ball 2. I mean, Sega is still recycling the Dreamcast Sonic Adventure engine for half their games.

Lord, this makes me weep. Travelers Tales is very anti-Nintendo and usually have someone else put their games on the Nintendo system, and usually does a poor job at it.

This makes me want to cry, really. They arent exactly high up on my beloved developers list either, although lately their track record has improved, I'm just not sure if I can stand for this...

Edit: Hey wait a minute, this reminds me of a poll like what spawned Shadow the Hedgehog. On the Sega of America website, they had a poll on what people would want in the Monkey Ball sequel, and it was these sort of gameplay additions. Then they take it to a low-quality development team and just hope there'll be some holiday sales.

QFTMFT.

Well they seem to be, given that most of their projects were PS2 and XBox bound only. Any GCN port was simply done by someone else (and botched) or was forced to do so (Sonic Gems Collection) They did not seem to be willng to support the system which makes me afraid that this Monkey Ball game is NOT GCN bound, which is very stupid.
