Gaming for Sony has always been a tiresome requirement. A mere neccessity in the ultimate goal of getting consumer electronics into people's homes and hands designed to pipe in the rest of Sony's damn entertainment media. Irritates the hell out of me.

(And I didn't bring up NIntendo except to point to how Sony's PSP launch will be pretty gamer-friendly).

I wasn't really aiming that at you, I'm just er 'discussing' the issue with 5 different people at the mo and was mostly aiming those comments at Gun N' Poops.


The reason the comments rubbed me the wrong way were articulated when I came into this thread

Every god damn Sony product Launch I SWEAR. Kaz Hirai, Ken Kutaragi etc keep on making comments like these at every Sony hardware release and it pisses me off everytime. I *LIKE* Gaming ya corporate tool, you can keep your damn Sony music and Sony movies off my freaking gaming hardware.

I guess I'll explain that further.

1) In this case Kaz Hirai made a distinction between 'portable entertainment' and 'handheld gaming' comparing 'handheld gaming' to a 'ghetto', now certainly I'm making a guess at what KH MEANT when he said that but my reaction that he considers non game entertainment funtions on the PSP to be just as important if not more so is perfectly reasonable especially given

2) the previous comments that KH and Ken Kutaragi have made in regards to PS hardware, once again the 'pleasedontcallps2gamemachine' one. That one has stuck with me like crazy because holy hell that was the biggest WTF quote a gaming executive has ever made, also

3) as a personal preference if I only care about one funtion then I prefer specialised hardware instead of general purpose hardware (for the standard reasons) and so I'm somewhat leery of products with multiple functionality.


Once Again, what I think about what KH *said* doesn't have anything much to do with how the PSP is going to perform, how nice the PSP hardware is (for gaming, otherwise, whatever), how the DS is going to perform, what George Harrison is having for dinner, or the price of CHEESE.

Right, so by saying that sony wants to use the gaming bits of PS hardware as a foot in the door and then use the hardware to provide a range of other media services I OBVIOUSLY mean that they "hate gaming with every fiber of their corporate being". Ayuh, why those things are practically SYNONYMS.
