Next Generation - The Hard Sale?

I don't care what side of the fence you're on, all I know is what I've seen thus far has not convinced me that I need to run out and buy a new console on launch day. For all of the special features and stupid Internet related crap these things are going to do, I don't want a PS3 more than I wanted a PS2. Granted this could change once Koei shows Dynasty Warriors PS3; but for the most part - the impetus to upgrade my current kit is not there. Even then, I expect my general reaction to be - "Wow!" but not run out and buy it on day one.

Microsoft dropped the ball with the Xbox2 reveal. I was never planning on purchasing one, but as a loyal Sony whore; I was almost legitimately scared they would have something to show to back up all of their sound and fury. Turns out it was a bunch of choppy crap.

The Playstation 3 seemingly plans on delivering what I was expecting of next generation, but am still unwilling to believe could be possible.

Still - on-line play? Got it. Movies? Got a whole bunch of DVD's thanks. HD? Fukkin' eat me!

Tell me I'm not the only bastard here more interested in playing PSU than buying a PS3.

I'm still waiting for my PSP to mature and get those AAA titles before I even consider dropping roll for a new console. It'll be fall of 2006 before I join the next gen. By the looks of things, it'll probably be a PS3. Warhawk, GTA, and MGS4 I can't pass up.

Wait until next E3 is all we can say. We know little about the games PS3 or Revolution are offering. All we know is what X360 has to offer so far.

At this point, I have no intention of buying any of the next-gen consoles. I could really care less about better graphics when the gameplay they're providing is no different than what we've been playing the last 5 years.

Hopefully Nintendo have something magical planned with the Revolution that will provide some much needed innovation. If it's just another console with Mario, Zelda, and Metroid games - I'm gonna cry.

Luckily I have my DS to fall back on. It looks to front up some original games that should keep me busy if the new consoles fail to impress. That and the PC has Spore, The Movies, Age of Empires III, etc.

:lol Dumbass.

Anyways, next-gen at this point in time is just potential. All we have to go on is CG targets and stuff running on Alpha kits. I'll wait for more media around X360's launch to make up my mind on whether or not its worth jumping to next-gen so soon, it X360 games close to launch STILL look like crap/run like crap then I'll be concerned. Now? I'm fine with what's been shown, I'm just waiting to see the goods around launch. As for PS3, I'm trying to keep my excitement in check until I see more real-time stuff, while the real-time demo's shown at Sony's PC were nice, they weren't rearly as impressive as the CG targets. I want to see more from them before I get excited about PS3's games, not going to set myself up for a dissapointment if they fail to live up to them.

So far chances of me jumping on next-gen with X360 are pretty high (dependent on launch software and their quality). PS3, as much as I want one at launch, I'll wait for. Sony's hardware is problematic, I want to make sure they work out the kinks (thanks for the shitty square button on the PSP Sony!).

I am going to be sticking with the three current gen systems until the PS3 launches, which, unless the games all somehow wind up looking like Tony Hawk's American Wasteland, and the system ends up costing $500+, will be a day 1 purchase for me. From then, I will get whichever system has the most titles I'm interested in after a price drop or two, and then eventually all three.

The current gen systems just have way too much left in them, imo, and outside of PGR3 and possibly another title or two, I don't see anything in the X360 lineup that will be making me really need one this year. The PS2 still has a shit ton of goodness coming, and Zelda, Fire Emblem, and Conker are pretty much definites for the GC and XB, not to mention a lot of good stuff coming for the PSP and DS, and I have more than enough already on my plate this year and well into next.

I see the greatest launch or 'launch window' in history coming up in November, you are biased.

I do think next gen will be a harder sale than current gen.

Though next gen GTA could be enough to drive PS3 sales to excess demand.

For a guy who can barely pay for rent, you've got an awful goddamned lot of money to siphon into Sony's coffers.

well he did say he is a whore and I guess he gets the money from rich old men he picks up on the streets.

PSU & .hack//G.U. will keep my PS2 satisfied into 2007. Plus game prices for current gen stuff might drop in the meantime so I can pick up games I've passed on up to now. The next-gen can wait.

I believe the question I'm posing here is. . .

If these pieces of kit don't offer anything substantially better than what we currently have, or some killer additional feature (DVD playback this gen rocked); will these companies face a harder time appealing to the mass market?

Will not sell consoles.

The fact that little new content of merit will be released for the current gen will force next gen purchases.

Personally, I think the most popular console brand finally breaking beyond the two controller standard could be a big deal. PS3 also has Blu-Ray movie playback going for it. Wireless standard controllers is attention-catching, but I doubt it's the sort of thing that would make a person tip to "upgrade".

I think the problem is most current gen games are still pretty good looking, even compared to pc games. In past generations that wasnt true.

I sort of agree.
I dont feel like I need a new console.

Unless Sony comes through with graphics or HD DVD makes a huge difference I'll probably sit it out and play PC and last gen games.

Fill that wooded area with shit to fight, and yeah - maybe. As is, it's a dull tech demo. Not an interesting game.

This isn't new.

The Playstation brand has supported Eight Player Games for years now. Micro Machines, Micro Maniacs, gobs of sports games.

I'm glad assholes like Sega, Nintendo, and Microsoft didn't influence Sony to fall into the four player limit ghetto.

It sucks that the PS3 will be losing one player total, but seven is better than four any day of the week. Fuck all those morons pimping a four player limit agenda. Sony has steamrolled your asses.

I don't think anybody is going to be terribly eager to run out and replace their DVD collection on Blu-Ray. Sure, it may not be the next Beta format; but I don't think the format will be widely received. It will just be a nice convenience for asshats like Squeenix to pack full of useless FMV.

What a load of bullshit. :lol

I can't count the amount of times I have had 7 people around saying "LETS PLAY SOMETHING ON ONE TV!"

Actually, I can, that's never happened and we just used to bring xboxs over....

Care to say why you said dumbass, or is it because you're just an Xboy?

I do believe he's saying he's a dumbass for saying something stupid like this:

"but as a loyal Sony whore; I was almost legitimately scared they would have something to show to back up all of their sound and fury."

Do I even have to explain? The statement is retarded to begin with, "oooh, I'm scared of the big bad MS. Don't hurt my precious Sony!!!". And yes, I'm the biggest Xboy ever. SO big in fact that I own a PS2/PSP and no XBox. Try again.

yes, it's a bit disturbing that there are 3 great systems on the market(with 3 new ones on the horizon) and a supposed quantum leap with the PSP- and yet its the "lowley" DS that has all the games I want. Seriously wtf? Next gen is already boring and it hasn't started yet:(

I can't count the amount of times I have had 7 people lug a console and television over my house to play a game.

That's clearly so much easier than using a multitap. :P

Either way, I don't care. The Playstation standard marches on, and hopefully on-line gaming will continue to expand; because instances of friends coming over and gaming are kind of rare.

Eight player Micro Maniacs fucking rocked the house. It's a damned shame they dumbed down Micro Machines on the current generation to the lame ass four player limit. >:(

it's simple really, there aren't any great new software planned for GC and Xbox and the PS2 makes my eyes hurt. Also, Nico turned out to be too ambitious for the hardware it's on.

I'm not ready to rumble on at launch prices simply because you often feel so dumb with the content you have and the premium you pay for it. I've never bought a console at launch (if the PSP doesn't count and that has sort of bit my ass) and god willing I'll refrain again.

That said, can't you condense threads about how cool Sony is and funny comparisons about the craptitude you enjoy and others don't into one massive thread? I've enjoyed your humor but I worry that your spreading yourself to thin on your knees for the Kutaragi USB tower.

Revolution is where my money is going next gen, but definitely not at launch. A chance to download all the games I give a damn about and have them playable on one system? Sold. Then I can sell the NES, SNES, N64, and Cube and run everything I need off of Rev.

After that, I might pick up one of the other systems. I'll get the one that offers the most games that appeal to me. At this point in time, I can't say which that is though.

There's plenty coming out on the PS2 to keep me busy (PSU, Okami, Urban Reign, and plenty of other stuff I'm sure you don't want to see the list). I'd like to replace my Gamecube this Holiday season as well so I can play some of the games I enjoyed on that one, but I'm not going out of my way for that Zelda game. I demand a Celda sequel! >:|

The last two launches I just had to have were the PS2, wanted a DVD player real bad, and the GBA - that one bit me in the ass.

As I was saying, the lack of must have secondary features seems to kick this generation back into the "game machines, get'em as you please" category. I managed to sit out Saturn and Playstation purchases until a while after launch.

Don't you worry yourself about me. ;)

And just to be fair, since the Xbots are on the defense - the PS2 gas station realtime demo won't sell hardware either. :D

I'm pretty much sold on the Revo and PS3. But honestly, all either company had to do was announce 'em. :)

Right now I'm on the fence for X360. If it launches with an arcade perfect VF5 or perfect backwards compatibility with my favorite Xbox1 titles (Metal Slug 3, Street Fighter Anniversary, Guilty Gear X2, Panzer Dragoon Orta and Outrun 2) then I'll get one.

Otherwise, nothing announced for it has really impressed me.

PS3 I'm sold on. I'll get one of those at launch as long as it costs less than 1000 dollars (and I expect it to launch at 300 anyway).

Revolution doesn't do anything for me at the moment. I assume I'll end up getting one for Zelda and Mario, but if that's the case I won't get one until both Zelda and Mario are out, and I'll also be very price sensitive with it.

For Rev, when they said the [second best] magic title - Smash Bros online - I was automatically sold. (Note: The first best magic title is "Earthbound 3" for Rev launch)

For PS3, when they said "MGS4", it was insta-sold.

For Xbox360, when they said "Xbox Live... but more awesome", yet again... sold.
