If they don't play for the whole year, do the players and union think they can ever make that lost money back? An average player making $7500,000 isn't going to get that back even with a $200,00 raise with the short length of NFL careers.

You're missing the point, thinking far too short term.

And screw 10 different women and have kids with them...who was that? It was someone from Denver right?

Travis Henry has like 8, Antonio Cromartie passed him though iirc

Ice cold. What'd he do to provoke that burn?

I don't really care about sports strikes, but I find it ridiculous that the players don't have guaranteed contracts. Who was the union president who agreed to that farce?

it's no surprise that NFL players are screwed in so many ways when you have tons of morons like cromartie who do not understand the concept of solidarity and its importance in negotiations, just making life easy for NFL execs and owners

"lockout preparedness fund?" Is that what the rest of the world calls a "savings account?" Or is it meant for discretionary funds?

Here's the problem. The players don't really have all that much bargaining power because the TV contract is guaranteed, except the players don't have to actually pay the players if they don't play.

If you have HBO you should watch Real Sports with Bryant Gumble that is airing this month (repeats)

It has on how NFL players lose all their money, I mean they showed a Lions player earn 25mil+ and is now on Bankruptcy with 11 children (7+ adopted, I think)

Or another NFL player who is living of disability, get 60k, but 30k is child support.
(Dude lives in shelters, car, etc.)

Crazy stuff man

1 thing they need to fix in the CBA for NFL is these stupid fucking rookies earning ridiculous amounts of money
They haven't earned shit. It's a vicious circle that almost always has the same result.

Rookies come out of colleges, not well off due to NCAA (another atrocious organization), so either they were paid off through underhand deals or their boys had his back financially. Go at least < 4th round, you are getting paid. Thing is, now you owe all those who helped you out, but now with interest.

It's stupid #1 overall gets close 30+mil guaranteed (+ stupid Signing Bonuses)

NFL should take the NBA approach, the only catch, money that was all over the place gets consolidated and guaranteed, and the wage scale is equal (signing bonus is the extra incentive)

NFL Draft:

#1 Gets 50mil
#2 Gets 35mil
#3 Gets 30mil
#4 Gets 27mil
#5 Gets 25mil

Hopefully my way of economic thinking, something along these lines

#1 Gets 3-5mil (Signing Bonus 10-20mil, up to team)
#2 Gets 3-5mil (Signing Bonus 10-15mil, up to team)
#3 Gets 3-5mil (Signing Bonus 7-10mil, up to team)
#4 Gets 3-5mil (Signing Bonus 5-7mil, up to team)
#5 Gets 3-5mil (Signing Bonus 3-5mil, up to team)
etc.

Money saved goes to those that have put in there time

You know players playing now are worrying about themselves, not what they agree on now, and how it will affect future players

If there's a lockout on both NBA & NFL, Good Lord ESPN will be hilarious to watch.

I've heard a lot that you would be surprised how many millionaire NFL players still live pay check to pay check because of so much stupid spending. They are fucked if there really is a lockout. The league really could have them bent over the sink because of this. Most of these guys can't afford to not play.
So what do you think of the owners? Wouldn't they be fucked too?

I would really like to see a year without the NFL. I don't dislike it, but I think it would be very interesting. However, I don't think there's any way it will actually happen. When the serious realization sets in, something will happen. America couldn't handle losing its football for a year.

I'm sure something prevents the owners from just getting scabs, right?
Even with scabs next year I promised myself I will not watch that bullshit.

I've heard that the owners already have received their guaranteed teevee money, so they can wait it out as long as they need to.

Listening to the players and the union leaders... man, some of these guys just don't realize that fans do not care about how *hard* it is for these guys to earn 6 figures for an average of 3 seasons.

Hey, it may be the only chance the Buffalo Bills have of winning the Super Bowl in my lifetime.

For the uninitiated, what is the most point of contention here? I mean, I know it's money, but are there any more specifics than that? Any good place that will neatly summarize this for those of us who don't keep up with it?

I know one big point is that the owners want to extend the number of games in the regular season. Owners want an 18 game season, but the players are concerned about potential injuries.

- Contract Guarantees
- Rookie Wage Scale
- 18 Game Schedule
- Player Safety
- Health Benefits

Simply put:

Owners: Play More Games (18, rather than 16), Make Less Money, adding only 2 new players to roster (so from 53 to 55), Rookie pay-scale, and those extra revenue streams through it be luxury boxes, vending/food, etc. = Owners Only

tl;dr - PLAY MORE!, Make LESS!

Players: Season as is, Concern for Injuries piling up, Guarantees in contracts, More money for players, add 5+ men to roster, meaning from 53 to 58, not in favor of Rookie pay-scale, but its being used as a bargaining chip (give and take device, owners get it, but have to give players something good in return)

tl:dr - Play Same, More Guarantees, & Health Benefits

What the players are asking for doesn't sound very unreasonable. I saw someone mention a Sports with Bryant Gumble earlier. That sounds pretty spot-on.
I saw a documentary a few years ago about how there are hundreds of retired players that are totally disabled and completely broke. Most linemen have serious brain trauma by the time they retire, even after only 3-4 years.
I'm pretty sure the new helmet-to-helmet rules are a response to mounting pressure from retired players who want/need health coverage. Many of these guys are legally retarded because of their former career and are now left to fend for themselves because the NFL gives them the big Fuck You after they retire/are cut.

How I think it is going to go:
Owners get:
Rookie pay scale(I think even veteran players think rookie pay is total bullshit)
Extended season
Non-Guaranteed contracts

Players Get:
5 extra roster players
Keep the money or make a little more (other then rookies)
Sightly better health insurance

Owners are going to win but the players will get some small victories.

Another giveback the owners want is to decrease the players' share of the revenue pool.

Forget that extended season crap, it was never get past the players. There isn't a single one of them that wants it (I don't either) and it's not a point they can be threated and financially choked into excepting.
