The government of Niger has cancelled at the last minute a special ceremony during which at least 7,000 slaves were to be granted their freedom.
A spokesman for the government's human rights commission, which had helped to organise the event, said this was because slavery did not exist.

It is not clear why the government, which was also a co-sponsor of the ceremony, changed its position.

At least 43,000 people across Niger are thought to be in slavery.

Between this and the constant e-mail scams, Niger gets my vote for most unintentionally hilarious African nation. Ya know, except for the whole human bondage thing.

Yeah, I think you're right. You always hear about Nigerian e-mail scams. But if people from Nigeria are Nigerians, what are people from Niger called?
the N word? :lol

I dunno.... good question

The CIA World Factbook says Nigerien, with an "e" instead of an "a". Nigerois, of course, being French for Nigerien. They need to have some major ethnic cleansing or something so the networks can get together and decide what to call them. I can't see Dan Rather talking about the Nigerois blood bath.

Next up: People from the Democratic Republic of the Congo vs. People from the Republic of the Congo.
