Well, I graduated last May and finally got a real job last week. I was all excited because I'll finally know how I'm going to pay the rent and all that garbage. Yay 4 paying the bills, right? Wrong. I crashed at 11:30 last night. I haven't gone to bed that early since I was like 14. Plus, I was tired as fuck this past weekend, and my Pabst tolerance is decreasing at an alarming rate.

Oh well... I know I should be happy I found a job in this shitty economy. The costs of financial security are staggering, however.

Try working 4:30pm to 12:30am Mon-Fri. That's been my shift for the past 3 and a half years. Although to be honest I have left early during certain times when it's dead. Can't complain though, good job while I go through school.

Yeah. I guess it is just a shock, having to dress up everyday and go to work after doing shit for a few months. I'm not complaining about the job as much as the sudden 180 my used-to-be worthless life has taken. Responsibility and accountability suck! Gimmie more college!

Honest to god, if there's any job out there you think you'd enjoy, or even know you'd enjoy, do your best to get it. I just cannot cope with a 9 to 5 job that I don't like, which is why I'm changing jobs all the time.

I can only hope that one day I find somewhere I want to go to in the morning. Fuck the money, as long as it's enough to live on I don't give a crap about that, it's finding something you like that matters.

I realise that's not always an option before people jump on me, I don't have a family to support or huge debts or anything.

And just think, you've basically got a lifetime of this feeling in front of you!

What kind of job do you have?

I'm an assistant in the products group of a fairly new and rapidly growing company, so I basically do a shitload of stuff that more or less nobody else wants to or has time to do.

Secret Service for me. I want to be a field agent. I couldn't stand having a desk job staring at a computer for the rest of my life. I'd shoot myself before I get a job like that.

Not necessarily. As long as you do what you like, and have the good sense to make sure the job doesn't unnecssarily make you wear a tie (I get to wear a t-shirt* and jeans to work, five days a week), you should be okay.

(*And not the preppy, buttoned-collar t-shirts either. Normal ones.)

Sadly, anything I want to do requires natural skills (ever told a careers counsellor that you want to be a footballer/author/whatever?). So I just try things I haven't experienced and hope I find something I like. I'm thinking of trying to get a job in a zoo next (not with the public), but I'm not sure if I'll need certain qualifications. I'll look it up sometime.

Well I'm an aspiring screenwriter, so I'm just going to work until that works out for me. And if it doesn't, then I still got work and maybe someday I'll have enough money to start my own company or something. Right now, I gotta pay the bills.

Boo hoo....let me know when you work 12:00am-8:30am, 6 days a week...and then right around 6:30am when you're at the home stretch and you think you'll finally be leaving that hellhole, you get slapped with an announcement stating MANDITORY overtime(2hr minimum, typically 4hrs though), so your ass is stuck there until 12:30PM, oh, and you're standing on your feet the whole time and you only get 30mins for lunch...then you get to go home, try to get some sleep, but remember, you're on a different clock than the normal world, so you don't get quiet nighttime sleep, you get construction going on a couple of blocks away from you sleep....Lather, Rinse, Repeat(&try not to kill someone along the way).

So you stare at a computer screen in your free time? 0_o

I'm so glad I'm not stuck in the working world yet.

By the same token, it really sucks having no money and no income at the moment.

9PM to 7AM, guys. Ever wonder what it was like to be tired all the time no matter how much sleep you get? <points to self> Ever wonder what it was like to have your motivation stomped on when you're arguably having more opportunities than ever before in your life?

I got a buddy who is starting a night job sorting bio samples like blood, semen, and urine and stuff. I think it is something like 11 pm to 7 am.

Sorry guys, I ain't got shit on you. Hopefully that type of dedicated work experience will lead to awesome jobs later.

I did the overnight shift (10:30pm-6:30am) at Wal-MArt for three months a long time ago. The pay was lousy, they treated us like shit, it was hard labor, nd when i'd get home i'd crash immediately and sleep for way too long. Ugh, that sucked.

9:30am to 6:00pm at Monolith. I was working 8:30am to 8:30pm but they ran out of things for me to do that would require 60 hours a week, so until they get really swamped, it's not that bad for me right now (everyone else there is working 60+ hours a week). I am not completely used to it yet, I have been sleeping in until noon everyday this summer until I got this job. It's a cool job with a lot of cool people, so I am very happy about it. Plus there is someone else here who works at Monolith.

You people with the 40 hr work weeks should stfu. You have nothing to bitch about till you're doing 60 hour weeks and weekends. Then you have something to cry about.

Well I generally enjoy working at Circuit City, but recently they have had this "funny" habit of sticking me with the lovely 9:30 AM-9:30 PM shift. I get one 30 minute break and they actually had the nerve to give that to me twice in the same week and still only had two days off.

I have enough work to do to fill a 60 but I have to get supervisor approval to work those extra hours, and as far as I can tell overtime will not be in my immediate future. Just cram time.

How much do you get paid? I've been wanting to work at a place like that.

EDIT: 30 min break? Damn. At my summer job, we get an hour....but they usually don't enforce it, so I at least take off an hour and 30 mins.

wooty woo, I'm starting my apprenticeship as a union organizer next week. I've been told to expect 12-14 hour workdays and only two days off a month for the first three (that's right, no weekends).

I would be really pumped except for the fact that I'm starting at a local in Ohio after requesting to be placed outside of the Midwest because I'm from Chicago. Oh well. I'm sure there's some interesting people in Columbus, Akron and Cleveland :). Err, I hope.

My brother just got a district manager position with a retailer selling consumer electronics. He's basically in charge of 5 of these stores and he is working 10-12 hour days Monday to Saturday and his "off day," Sunday, he works for 5-6 years.

No sir. I do not envy him, except for how much money he is pulling down. I envy that.

Pattergen, did you have a part time in college? Just curious.
Christ I did a midnight to eight am shift last summer, pulling 40-56 hours a week, and sometimes they'd put me in the other two shifts, and that was a breeze compared to college with a part time job.
I haven't done an actual 9-5 yet, granted, but I've worked 40 hour weeks with crazy ass hours, but after years of class/part time job a 9-5 seems almost appealing.

I worked 208 hours the 4 weeks prior to going on my japan trip. That sucked ass, and shifts over 12 hours should be like illegal, I worked 15.5 hours one day and then had to come back into work 9 hours later. Stupid I tells you, all to run this disgusting mint water that only elderly folks with no tastebuds actually drink.

People in the US can prolly find this shit on store shelves, it's called metromint.

7am to 5pm for SIX days, then 3 days off.

8am to 6pm for SEVEN days then 2 days off.

8am to 6pm for SEVEN days then 3 days off.

Then it starts over.

My last paycheck was for 109.33 hours..granted I worked an extra day ;P

Anyway, I win. (as do 3 other members here since they work the same schedule as me ;P)

1:00PM-9:30pm starting next week. I'm going to school at the end of September from 8:30am-10:30am, so my day starts at 8:30am and ends at 9:30pm. That isn't so bad though as I have 2 and a half hours between school and work to finish my homework and do whatever I want (mainly surf the net). This will also give me a chance to scale back my cable as I wont be watching much TV. Plus I'm getting my saturdays back :D.

Same (2 weeks).

I'll trade you the extra 10-15 hours more you may or may not work for 2 days off a week.

Either way, we both work too much

Freelance.

I work when I feel like it. When I get called in I bill hourly.

Bragging about working over 40 hours is seriously crazy. It's like people bragging about how long they've spent in jail.

Oh I've done that. But the best thing about it was that it was contracted, so I got no overtime. I took the job fully expecting this, so it's kinda like volunteer work :p It's cool when your hands split open without bleeding from all the damned chopping, hot pan handling, and dish washing. I seriously had gaps in my skin.

Ha! 8pm to 7am. Actually, I put in 150 hours on the last paycheck (75 hour, two weeks in a row).
