TOKYO--Team Ninja is best known for its Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive franchises, two properties that the Tecmo Koei-owned development studio has strongly supported over the years.

During its pre-Tokyo Game Show event in Tokyo today Team Ninja announced the continuation of the Dead or Alive franchise with the announcement of Dead or Alive 5. The team showed a brief pre-alpha version of the game and revealed it will ship in 2012 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

During the presentation, Team Ninja also revealed more details about Ninja Gaiden 3, showing off a new trailer focusing on three strokes concept first revealed at E3 this year. The first stroke (detailed at E3 2011) represents the katana; the second stroke, revealed at tonight's event, represents consequence. The trailer detailed protagonist Ryu Hayabusa's struggle with doing away with his own agenda to do what he is assigned to do.

Team Ninja also showed off a new demo of the game, which focused on the new Play Style system, designed to accommodate for both experienced players and those not familiar with the past Ninja Gaiden games. The system features two playing styles: Ninja, which focuses on action gameplay; and Hero, which focuses on story and supports auto-guard and auto-evade. The demo focused on the Ninja style and followed Hayabusa through a number of gory encounters through the streets of London (and included some particularly bloody finishing moves).

Team Ninja also revealed Ninja Gaiden 3 will not use the same kind of dismemberment system the past games have used because the developers wanted players to feel what it’s like to “cut someone down”. The developers didn’t shy away from making the game violent and wanted players to feel the consequence of this violence.

The concept for the online part of the game is "a world of ninjas", with an eight-player multiplayer mode that will see players challenge other ninjas in the world to become number one.

Ninja Gaiden 3 will be released early 2012 and will feature PlayStation Move support. The game was first unveiled at TGS 2010, Ninja Gaiden 3 will feature close-combat fighting, online multiplayer, and both cooperative and multiplayer experiences.

Team NINJA's explaining about the NINJA GAIDEN 3.

There are 3 strokes which represents the key elements of NINJA GAIDEN 3. http://t.co/N2rDhL5

During E3, Team NINJA focused on the first stroke which we called the SWORD, that represents the Katana and the killing element of Hayabusa.

Now Team NINJA will focus on the 2nd stroke, which is Consequence. This represents the inner struggle and consequence of Hayabusa's action.

That "I'm a Fighter" poster looks nice. Do want.

Ninja Gaiden 3 is definitely high on the wanted list for me. I hope we get a demo too.

THIS DOESN'T MAKE ANY FUCKING SENSE

Isn't this saying that dismemberment IS in the game? It's just not the same system as before and appears to be more brutal... Or am I reading that wrong?

From gameplay footage, he cuts through torsos and causes a lot of blood to spew out, but no heads or limbs will fall off.

The good news is... The terribleness of this will make Itakagi want to make Devil's Third awesome to shit all over it.

When's that getting shown at TGS anyhow?

It's just crazy. I mean, the one thing that was added to NG2 that was an improvement to the series, completely unique to the genre and not screwed up is now taken out. The dismemberment system is brilliant. It's visceral, functional and balanced.

It boggles the mind. I continue to believe that the people in charge of this game have never played other action games.

DMC does combos
GoW does violence/mainstream
Bayo does crazy
NG does enemies

They've taken everything that was unique about NG out and put in crappy versions of things that have been around for years in peer games.

If Itagaki said dismemberment was Ninja Gaiden 2, now we are doing something different. People would eat it up

If Itagaki said we are putting in a better story. People would eat it up

If Itagaki said the MP is about a world of ninjas. People would eat it up

so, what you're saying is that Itagaki earned the respect and trust of consumers, but Hayashi hasn't?

Now the question is, would Itagaki say that?

So Ninja Dog mode is now an option built in and no dismemberment. Bah, no thanks.

hand holding mode confirmed. destined to fail.

It just baffles me on how people react to this.

They won't force you to play on Very Easy mode guys, if they wanna have this so more people (less skilled or those that don't wanna be punished by a relentless difficulty) can enjoy it, so be it.

"Wah wah wah Ninja Gaiden has always been a hard game!"

Yes, so far, but have you played AND completed Ninja Gaiden 3 already that you deem it an easy game? I don't think so. If it ends up being a piece of cake, bash it until your heart worns out, before the game is even out, should just spare us of this pointless rant.

The more I read about this game, the sadder I get. This is NOT Ninja Gaiden.

This is NOT Itagaki's Ninja Gaiden you mean. In which case, I wouldn't know what to tell you, just to look forward to Devil's Third maybe?

lolololol

Wait, wait

People are actually bitching about there being an easy mode meant for people without skill like Bayonetta's Very Easy or Devil May Cry 3's Easy Automatic?

Wow.

If ANYTHING superior to the previous two games was shown at this point of NG3, I would be willing to give this game the benefit of the doubt. I have a vested interest in the series, and I'm more apt to give it a break. When NG2 was introduced, dismemberment was HEAVILY featured, and it turned out to be a GREAT mechanic. It satisfied a bunch of design aspects.

So far, the trailers for NG3 have shown, forced stealth, intrusive onscreen button prompts, ridiculous, slow environment interaction minigames, braindead enemies and completely vanilla bosses. That's 0/5 for me. This is coming from someone that actually likes NG2 Sigma.

I actually said in the trailer reveal thread that the direction was compelling. I don't know if it will be good. But, it has me interested.

The multiplayer section in NG2S for me is subpar. Team Ninja now has to prove that they can do multiplayer right.

Honestly, the dismemberment system in games tends to make it cheesy and cartoony. It tends to emasculate the enemy from a formidable foe to a pull-me-apart toy for you to try to disassemble as much as possible before it expires. It can be done well (and I do realize that there's a history of flying limbs in samurai movies... which by the way are very different weapons from ninja swords,) but unless there is consequence or unless disarming is part of the strategy balance, I'm fine with just blood but no bouncing meat.

Did you play Ninja Gaiden 2? Formidable foe is an understatement.

A big NO to the second one.

The other two are true though. Because Itagaki made better games, duh

Dismemberment should be handled to that of Ninja Gaiden, only every once and a while. A body part shouldn't fly from a body after every single slash of a sword, however I do feel that no dismemberment at all is unrealistic, there should be a balance.

Sigma 2 had purple flames
this has no dismemberment

I seriously think they're trying to ease NG into a T rated series

I can give you a breakdown of the dismemberment system in NG2 if you'd like. It is the opposite of what you're describing.

Just the opposite, really. You have to suspend your disbelief for the adamantium limbs that can resist cuts from a sword that slices through metal like butter.

Makes absolutely no sense to me.

are we hating on difficulties now?

As Cliffy B said, the easiest mode, can never be too easy. Everyone should be able to finish your game.

Because if there's one thing I've always wanted from Ryu Hayabusa, its remorse, soul searching, and self-reflection ._.

But we have already seen dismemberment and want something new. Namely playing MP to unlock SP weapons.

I don't think that's even the case. Single player is focused on the steel-on-bone gimmick, which is only for the sword.

It seems only MP will have different weapons based on previous interviews.
