Nintendo Dream's Kobayashi/RE4 Interview Translated!

chespace

It's not actually trolling if you don't admit it
Well, at least the first couple pages of the 7 page interview for now, thanks to Novery (and neo2056 for the scans). It's a bit light on the meat so far, but more to come tomorrow and the day after.

HK: I think it's best described as a 'masterpiece' that transcends all video game genres. It's a game unmatched in quality.

I thought that part was kinda amusing... Kobayashi calling his own game a masterpiece. I'm not sure even Kojima has done something that egotistical. But I don't doubt he's just as big-headed. :)

Would it be okay for someone to post it here? For some reason I can't access 1UP.com on this computer (never could).

HK: Also, you know when you break a wooden box with a few quick slashes from your knife? That was something we changed.

ND: Uh, what?

HK: In the demo version, players had to open the suitcase and switch from their gun to the knife. But we changed that in the retail version, so players only have to hold the L button to slash with the knife.

Let us give thanks.

Awesome work, looking forward to the other pages

Putting the knife function as the L trigger was a great idea. In the next RE, we should be able to map buttons to various weapons like Zelda so we don't have to go into the menu selection all the time. Or at least make a button for grenades

He seemed pretty self-deprecating in my (hugely limited) experience with him, so I think the quote's intended with a healthy winking smiley.

on a complete side note, does anyone else have any problem accessing anything at 1up.com while using firefox? i cant ever get it to load in firefox, and always have to switch to IE to view stuff there..

I can't get it to load in neither IE nor Firefox. It won't load at work either but it will on my parents' computer.

Just thought I'd point out that Novery is the man. I'm merely hostin and boastin.

Novery you da man!

you da man for hosting
neo da man for scanning
novery da man for translating

you all 'da man'!

Sorry guys. I didn't have time to transcribe the whole thing yesterday. The day started off as a lazy Sunday and the translation was going swimmingly, but then I got involved in an episode involving an old japanese man, a turnip, and a stapler. Not pretty.

More Kobayashi interview text tomorrow!

HK: Also, this might sound strange, but you should do a little practicing. Practice shooting and aiming so you shoot exactly where you want. Also, players should have a surplus of ammo, so bold play is definitely OK, too. But if they want to finish the game with "total clear" (note: is this the RE4 equivalent of an "S" rating?), then they should be concerned about their accuracy rating.

WHAT? I hope he's saying there's something hidden when you get a high hit ratio. I'm actually working on a 100% hit ratio run

That would be interesting, wouldn't it? How far are you in with your 100% run Wario64?

Wario64, are you some kind of RE4 savant? :)

Cuz I seen your insane scores for Mercenaries too...

It's definitely possible to get 100% hits though... just do everything point blank.

Interesting stuff, especially about the sound and awesome gun effects, which to me Capcom really nailed incredibly well in RE4. But that aspect of the game turns out more a matter of Capcom choosing the best sources:

HK: In fact, we outsourced a lot of music and sound effects to an American company to get that Hollywood feel. In Japan there aren't a lot of resources for authentic gun sound effects.

nice. MORE MORE MORE.. :rolls on floor in ectasy:

:)
but I am not wet.

Is there a S class in RE4? I sure hope there's something special to be had.

I wasn't sure how to translate what Kobayashi calls "Total clear" (in katakana). I just assumed it meant an "S" rating of some sort.

I just love the game, that is all :P It may even be one of my favorite games ever

I just got to disc 2 (ch 5-1) on my 100% hit ratio run, so I should be finishing it up pretty soon. Clocking at around 2 hours and 30 minutes, so it's kind of a speed run as well. Of course I'm using the uber weapons...I have no idea how you can get 100% hit ratio with the regular weapons. I still have trouble at some parts, even with the almighty handcannon

The weird thing is that RE4 doesn't have a ranking system like other RE's. Maybe they omitted it in the U.S. version?

How do you deal with the Regenerators? Are you still using the rifle for them?

I haven't gotten to them yet on this run, but you can kill them with the uber weapons. I did it on my previous run with the chicago typewriter...no need to use the infrared scope :)

wha? damnit that kinda sucks i suppose :( but that doesn't change the fact that the game is damn near perfectly awesome. perhaps something else needs to be done? it does seem weird that they keep track of all of that, and not have anything unlocked afterwards...

I'm thinking Capcom screwed U.S. gamers up the ass and included a ranking system in the Japanese version. I still don't understand why the game does not give you a grade at the end, like all other RE's

What makes you think it's in the JP version if it's not in the US version?

John, in the interview, Kobayashi talks about a "perfect hit" percentage grade -- or at least that's how Ryan is interpreting it in his translation.

OK, back.

No idea. :)

Seriously tho, my interpretation is that he's simply talking about finishing the game, or perhaps finishing with a good accuracy rating? It doesn't sound like he's referring to a specific term within the game, at least, but I haven't played it much yet so I dunno.

I checked with someone whose Japanese is perfect and he said it's vague in the Japanese as well.

Thanks for checking on that, John. Just curious, but have you heard a developer use "total clear" like that?

And Wario, too bad about not getting anything cool for your awesome run. Mad props though.

No problem. And yeah, I've heard it used before, usually to mean finishing a game completely, i.e. getting a 100% rating, or collecting all the doodads, or unlocking every secret, or whatever. It varies by game, which is why it's kinda hard to tell exactly what he's talking about in this case.

Wario... is this on professional or normal?

Still insane, either way.
