Let me see if I can get this right...

Nintendo claims 6M DS shipped by March 2005...

What are the odds of Nintendo hitting that 6M units figure by the end of March? 3.2M as of the end of January...roughly? Can they move 2.8M more by the end of March? BTW, I know the 6M is a shipped total, but they'd obviously want to sell a lot of those unless they're just trying to showboat for the annual report. At the current rate in Japan, they're not gonna move more than another 300-400k by the end of March. And that's assuming they have a nice late-March rally. I just don't see what's on tap there. And here, the numbers should be higher in February, but could they pull another 750k or so out of the hat by then? And what of Europe? What can they sell there in a few weeks?

It looks to me like there's some discrepancy between what Nintendo expects to sell, and what they're on track to sell.

It was after we finally got the NPD figures for the DS, and I was trying to figure out how they planned on selling that stock in reasonable amount of time. I see it the way sonycowboy does. Nintendo wouldn't need to claim a larger number than they plan on shipping. But it could be a DC/GC-esque situation, where they oversell, and then their shipping figures remain relatively flat for a few months while stock sells-through. It's a nice PR move to pad the fiscal report IMO. But we'll have to wait and see. For all we know, Nintendo fans might actually be right, and Nintendogs might actually end up being a killer app. :lol I don't think so, but who knows? But whatever the case, sell-through is gonna full at least 1M short IMO. I don't expect them to break 5M sold-through unless a miracle happens. They are a long was away from it right now, and that's with one month left. They have to hope for a big month in the US for February, and then hope March is good for all territories. They're 1.75M short of 5M right now, so some work to do.

I don't think MC gets the full amount of sales. And neither does NPD. Don't they all extrapolate their figures? Doesn't matter anyway. Shipped = sold to the manufacturer. It's not like they're gonna get returns. So unless MC is somehow 100% accurate, then there are 300K units sitting on shelves in Japan, since Sony claims 1.18M shipped. I doubt there are that many considering that's like 40% of the figure MC claims are sold.

AFAIK, Sony doesn't need to lie about shipments.

How accurate are trackers? Aren't their numbers extrapolated from much smaller sampling sizes? When did Media Create the favored chart? I don't even remember Enterbrain back then, I thought it was Media Create, Famitsu and Dengoku or whatever the hell that last one was called. Famitsu's numbers were always lowest, but they seemed to track everyone evenly, and were considered the most reliable. But I don't think any of these trackers have ever been very reliable or accurate. I think gamers just picked one arbitrarily based on consensus.

I'm gonna ask again. Has it ever been resolved as to the accuracy of the sales trackers? Sony's shipping number have always been higher than what shows on the charts. I use Sony primarily b/c as the big seller with the best-kept shipping figures, they are kinda the standard here.

EDIT: BTW, for that tracker stuff, I said it for MS and Nintendo too. Everyone should probably be affected proportionally by the percent error in the charts. It's been something that's never been answered since these sales threads started.
