Nintendo showcases how the mouse controls will work on the Switch 2 home screen

My hand hurts from just watching this... Many children will have medical problems as a result. It is simply too unergonomic.

I ready to be surprised but yeah it looks worse than a regular mouse.

I do wonder if you were able to use the joystick and face buttons on the non-mouse joycon instead of the mouse joycon it may alleviate some issues?

I don't really care for this specifically. But I have to say it's really nice how they've implemented the feature on a system level and how accessible it is at all times. Just turning the JoyCon2 on its side and the system instantly changing the control method is neat.

I tested it months ago by gliding a Switch 1 joycon and pretending the trigger was the mouse button. It was surprisingly, not as horrible as I thought. In a pinch, way better way to play Doom than leaving it attached and using the stick, that's for sure. When not in a pinch -I'm sure there will be attachments, and some games will allow normal mice as they already do on NS1.

It's simply a net gain IMO

It's funny that both of the Switch 2 gimmicks (mouse and videochat) are stuff that have been around for ages and nobody really cares.

Nintendo fans never asked for this. If they left both off, they maybe could have sold the S2 for less.

In typical Nintendo fashion they'll add this cool new feature....but won't put a browser on there...
Serious question, why would you even need a browser? Everyone has a bunch of other devices already which include them. Isn't it just easier to whip out your phone to do whatever you need to do, and not interrupt the gameplay?

In docked mode it just seems cumbersome and in portable mode.. Well if you're not at home on Wi-Fi, what's the point? I guess I'm missing something here but it just seems like such a non-issue.

Mouse controls are great if you're sitting a desk. This isn't a PC though, it's a console that I'll be playing in a loungeroom where there's nothing but space between me and the TV.

There's no surface for me to move a mouse around on. Unless I can use a joycon mouse on my leg, I will never use it.

No one is using this

(cue for the dumbasses that will point out to me I was wrong because 100 people do or whatever....)

I expect accessoires for it. There was a ton of crap for the Switch from golf clubs to pistols. Maybe they'll even add a real mouse later.

"You have to create a new claw-like way to hold your hand."

I had assumed that generally while using the mouse, you would not be using the face buttons on that Joycon, rather the triggers like mouse buttons. That is why I wasn't worried when I tried sliding my old Joycon around. It was actually OK. Indeed, if you need to manipulate the face buttons, that would result in a crappy, claw-like experience.

I remain skeptical. In Metroid, you use a left shoulder button to toggle the right joycon between normal stick and mouse mode. Perhaps, those face buttons aren't deactivated, but I suspect they aren't expected to be used while aiming and shooting that much demanding a claw hand either. We will see. I have this kind of suspicion that this guy just kind of demo'd the way it felt to hold and use the buttons without necessarily a gameplay example. Like the B button on a sideways Wiimote, a second class citizen.

Edit: I just pulled out my old R joycon again and uh...it's honestly not that bad hitting the face buttons? It's like hitting the buttons on the left side of my gaming mouse. Yeah, it's thinner and not as ergonomic (duh), but it's not like I'm contorting my hand into a different shape or taking on new muscle memory. Basically my fingers on the right side scrunch a bit to make up for the lack of mass. I'm not saying that's wonderful but it's not some new claw thing.

Final edit: now the LEFT joycon, striking the buttons on the RIGHT side, with your thumb. You got me!!!

I use a vertical mouse, so this doesn't look too uncomfortable. But I am hoping someone makes a shell that adds some volume to it.

I feel like the opposite is true, because most of your hand can remain curled, which should relieve at least some stress from your wrists.

it seems like your hand is also slightly tilted similar to the hand position of some ergo-mice.

Watch them not supporting other mice as options... 🤦‍♂️
this is naturally the default option because it is included in the hardware, but supporting any other mouse should be the upgrade option. Mice look like they look for a reason. normal, cluttered gaming, vertical, trackball, all have more width and overall volume (and even those I find too small), joycons are way too small to use for long time periods, even if it is okay for a minute or two.
