NintendoDS.com says that it will go online.

Gahiggidy

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
WIRELESS NETWORK

With Nintendo DS, you can connect with
a local wireless network of up to 16
players. The wireless range is an
incredible 30 to 100 feet (depending on
circumstances), and multiple players
can play multiplayer games using just
one Nintendo DS game card.

Nintendo DS technology also provides
for a wireless LAN connection, which
could allow a theoretically infinite
number of players to connect at a hot
spot and compete at a central game hub
on the internet, even if they're
thousands of miles apart.

Note that Nintendo DS wireless
communication, including PictoChat, is
not privatge and is not monitored by
Nintendo. We recommend that you
never reveal any personal information
or arrange to meet a stranger.

Found that under the "wireless" section.

Hope it's more than just "in theory".

Yeah, sure, it's old info, but it's speaking in number of players, not whether the process itself is theory.

Awesome, I can theoretically connect with other players on the internet! Just like with my GameCube broadband adapter!

Yeah, Nintendo isn't officially "online" until they engineer an elaborate pay to play, peer to peer network and force developers and consumers to comply.

I still feel it's safer to go with the "I'll believe it when I see it," approach, but I do think the DS has a much more likely chance of going online, if not by Nintendo but definitely by more third parties than just Sega. the out of the box Wi-Fi functionality really helps. I'm still going to wait until it plays out though.

It'll be cool to bring the DS online, but I mean, it's only the DS. I would've prefered bringing the 'Cube online (moreso...).

The Cube IS online. Online support is another story alltogether. :)

It's said that on Nintendo's website ever since the DS was announced. Don't hold your breath.

I haven't seen them come out and say they are NOT going online either like they did with the Gamecube from the start. Take that for what you will.

I'm gonna bet on yes, expect something at E3 or even beforehand. They didn't include IEEE-standard Wireless protocols for nothing.

GI: When do you think we’ll see games that can be played online via internet hotspots?

Kaplan: It really depends on what the developers want to do. It’s an open book. They have the tools now if they want to pursue that then that’s something they can definitely do.

GI: That was the same line that was used for the GameCube.

Kaplan: You’re right.

GI: But nobody did it… besides Sega.

Kaplan: That’s not to say it won’t happen here.

It depends on developers = screwed

Didn't they say they had a mic in development for it?

Anyway, wireless online multiplayer port of Beetle Adventure Racing plz. And Snowboard Kids.

Oh, and it needs a headset. You can't be "online" without a headset

I like this man's sarcasm. :)
