"No European X04 event" - Microsoft

New events unlikely to showcase next-generation hardware.

Microsoft will not be running its traditional European Xbox press event this year, a spokesperson for the company confirmed to gamesindustry.biz this afternoon. Instead, offices in individual territories will run their own smaller events to showcase games to each country's press and trade.

"We officially won't be doing a European X04 this year," a spokesperson for Microsoft UK told gi.biz. "Instead we'll be focusing on individual countries. So in terms of UK we'll have a showcase event with our key games - Halo 2, Fable, Jade Empire, Forza [Motorsport] - but we won't have one big European event."

Previous X0- events have seen Microsoft transport journalists, publishers, developers and trade figures to glitzy locations in Europe, where the platform holder has unveiled new software, studio acquisitions and made other key announcements, as well as inviting attendees to try out new software.

Microsoft has yet to finalise details of the UK event, indicating that it wasn't too far along in the planning stages yet. However, we were told the platform holder would probably hire a venue rather than invite trade and press to its headquarters.

Microsoft has not finalised the UK date, either, but anticipated something "later than X0 events previously were," which presumably means October or even later in the year. Microsoft also admitted today that events in individual territories would not necessarily take place on the same date.

The latter point in particular almost certainly rules out the new format as a launch platform for Xbox 2, currently codenamed Xenon, adding weight to suggestions that the next-generation platform will be unveiled at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas on January 6, 2005, when Bill Gates delivers the pre-show keynote speech.

Over the weekend, senior industry sources, speaking to this website, indicated that it was extremely likely that Microsoft would use CES 2005 to unveil Xbox 2 - having used the same show four years ago to introduce the world to the original console.

Sony also cancelled the show in Europe, right? The "Playstation Experience" or whatever it was called, it was part of ECTS. But that's next year anyways.

well they did a couple where they'd just showed Halo2 and more Halo2. Or was that E3?

Halo 2 was behind closed doors at E3...remember? If you cant troll well dont troll at all.

Saw the "no X04" thing coming when they announced that they'd have stuff at the Gamestars event this summer, kinda sucks but nothing ever really happened there anyway besides the rare deal being announced, other than that it seemed to just be an E3 re-run.

I would hardly call Halo2 e3 showing a closed door event; went all the net hours after it was shown; and by your logic, x04 is also closed door cause its not open to the public.

so yeah. I stand by my remark.

E3 isnt open to the public, Halo 2 wasnt on the show floor, hence behind closed doors. x04 would have been invite only so yes it would have been a closed doors enviroment, but i never claimed otherwise.

You are saying that because people who played were allowed to post impressions and make 30 second video clips that Halo 2 wasnt behind closed doors?

Is it true that several companies like Sony and EA are gonna skip out on E3 next year? It seems like big trade shows are becoming worthless since it's usually two or three games that get all the coverage. Though this is different from E3, so I'll stop typing...

I've heard that EA is going to bail (which is not surprising considering that they really don't make types of games that get good coverage on a show like that), but I didn't hear anything about Sony.

Can they go through one Microsoft article without referring to them as a "platform-holder"? This is the third article I've seen that refers to them like that..I think they were all GI articles too. Not that it's incorrect..just repetitive.

I thought I remembered reading it somewhere. It sounded ridiculous at the time, but when you think about it, it makes sense. Publishers should start holding regional exhibitions every three or four months rather than gathering in the same place to show off the same games each year. Other than the portable hardware, this year's E3 seemed like a repeat of last year. I can only watch so many videos of GT4, Halo 2, and Half-Life 2 before I think "can't they just finish the F$%@ing games already?"
