Adopt an alien creature and explore the universe side-by-side in the Companions update! Take care of your new friend as they find hidden resources and protect you from hostile aliens, or genetically modify their eggs and breed unique, never-before-seen creations!

Patch Notes

I really appreciate how Hello Games just STFU and got to work.

No excuses, no "roadmaps", no BS, just hard work.

They delivered late, but they did, and kept working hard on it to improve on it. To this day.

Improved PS4 Loading times too (I think that the benefits from their PS5 optimisations are being passed onto PS4, think Oodle Textures maybe).

Oodle decompression is taxing on the PS4 CPU though. See how Days Gone load times actually increased after the move to Oodle.

You can decompress with GPU shaders too, but fair point. Did the install size on PS4 decreased after that patch?
Yes, the install size decreased.
It's interesting to see PS4 games adopting Kraken and Oodle (and some already used it before, like MK11 for example). But keep in mind, even if running a game in BC mode allowed the data to be decompressed through the fixed function decompression block, there are factors impacting the load times beyond the decompression itself.
So far, most next-gen games are just enabling ray-tracing and little more too, load times in third party games still have a long way to go before they get on par with the likes of DS or SM.

I think I've tried to get in to this game after every update...but never seem to last more than a few hours. I think its time to admit defeat and move on, For whatever reason, it's just not my bag.

How many of their trailers largely consist of a guy running with cool looking shit in the distance? Says it all from a gameplay perspective.

HG keep on winning with this game. Gonna have to fire up the old Xbox save and see what's going on.

Also, if you have the opportunity to try this in VR... do it. Boyhood dream level stuff.

This update greatly decreased the crashes that I was having. I play the VR version on PS5, much sharper since the previous patch.

No Man's Sky is a game that just gets better the longer I avoid playing it.

I think I'll continue to do so until their final update.

It makes me wonder...

Had the game launched like this (which I know is impossible, but just play with me here in fantasy land), how different would the reception have been? Would it have been a GOTY contender? Would it be one of the most popular games out there, to this day, had it launched with all the stuff it has now?

That's actually an interesting thought.
Speaking of possibilities, one could also think that a full-featured No Man Sky would have had much smaller legs, as the drama-and-redemption arc surely boosted its popularity considerably over time. Still, it would be a dangerous game to play intentionally.

can someone explain me, how the dev keeps making the game better? where does the money come from?
i remember being super hyped, buying the game day1,seeing people returning their digital copy on steam and whatnot and sean murray being radio silent for almost a year.
how does he keep delivering with his team?
i dont understand the business model nor do i understand, why other companies dont do something similar.
instead, we keep getting yearly releases of shitty sport games.

I gather that word of mouth followed by goodwill makes the money, people are still buying it.

Also, there used to be an old thing in gaming called 'a passion for your project'

I guess these guys didnt get the memo on 'thats such an 80's frame of mind'

Tsk.

They've never published exact numbers, but they've said the game jumps up on the charts every time an update is out.
Also, it's a small dedicated team, so their cost for operations shouldn't be unbearable, when you have an at least decently selling game to support you.

Are all these updates free, or are the paid DLCs?

All 100% free, no microtransactions, no nothing. It's incredible really.
