No more gamestore employees at E3?

My producer just got off the phone with e3 registration and they said that there would half as many people this year as last year because they have made it near impossible for gamestore employees to attend. If true this would make it so much easier for those of that have work to do there, but it sounds suspicious given their lax track record. Has anybody who works in retail been able to successfully register yet?

they should just emulate the TGS formula

Have days where it's exclusive for people who are there to get WORK done and then open it up to the public for a day or 2

I think I read somewhere that they were going to start making it more difficult for GameStore employees to get in.

Fine by me, I've got plenty to do at E3, and this one in particular is sure to be hectic due to all the new next-gen games and the unveling of playable PS3 and Revolution titles.

EDIT: I feel bad for developers though. From what I hear, they don't get to have a good time at E3 because they get caught up in administrative meetings and stuff.

Ohhhhhh, SNAP.

Now watch the mass exodus of EB/GameStop employees who quit their jobs because the E3 pass was the only reason they worked there.

About f'n time. Last year I had to wait nearly 30 minutes to play New Super Mario Bros because one of these dudes was just playing the demo in every possible way through, with no hurry whatsoever.

That sucks, I was looking for a job and was thinking a gamestore for e3, oh well that job fucking sucks anyway.

That's my big problem with the show lately. People just playing games at their leisure as if no one is waiting behind them.

They should never, ever even consider this. TGS is brutal enough, and the general public there is exceptionally polite and considerate, even when moving in large groups. E3 open to the American public at large would be nightmarish.

I doubt there will be much of a drop in game store employee attendance, though. Every year there are more and more people in my way on the show floor with "Best Buy" on their damn badges.

Actual work does happen there. Some of our people had 12 hours of meetings a day last year.

I'm sure they did. I'd take 12 hours of meetings concerning games and things gaming related vs. 12 hours of coding or meetings regarding oracle software projects though.

You live in Finalnd right? It must be a massive pain to come all that way to work and be flooded with fanboys.

Despite all this, I for one am still pleased that they are going to have the two-hour "media only" event the morning of the first day.

Well, I do realize that I'm really lucky to get to go there and play all these awesome games. Hence I feel that having too much of an attitude is wrong.

In fact, having retail staff there doesn't really bother me unless people take extensive gaming sessions. I would actually be fine with anyone there if there was a, say, 5-10 min limit for the games.

You and me both buddy, I'll able to get stuff done without any hassle.

I wish I had your patience.

I don't have to do work at E3 but I have a fuckload of work because of E3. Screw you media guys, if I'm going to E3 I'm going to chill out from E3 there and check out games.

Hey, he was doing critical research for his borderline minimum wage job! How else is he going to barrage walk-ins with pre-order requests with a clear conscious?

I wonder if it does any good.
In fact, by letting retail employees going there, it give more chances for the customer to receive info/impression on games and well, they may just buy more.

Good. It should just be managers from retail and that's it. No common sales associate and their punkass girlfriend who goes "is this all pokeymans?" and their lame Powerman 5000-looking friends and shit, all standing around hogging the fuck out of kiosks.

Nah, I'm pretty sure they'll just continue to ignore customers while playing on the only demo kiosk that isn't broken. It is a sacred way.

The past 2 years of E3 have been extremely crowded. Nearly every other badge was something like EB Games and Walmart or Circuit City or some shit like that.

Last year, I only got to play *15* games during 3 days because of the insane crowds and people hogging the koisks. That's absolutely RIDICULOUS.

While retail is an important part of the industry, I think retail employees should be allowed to attend the show in limited quantities. Hurray for this news.

For the final nail in the coffin, get rid of the swag. Attendance would plummet to never foreseen lows :)

I don't know what annoys me more: retail store lackeys taking up space or swag hunters who are there just to collect stuff for ebay. Last year at the Mario Kart DS set-up, there was this trio of swag hunters who coordinated their placements in line so that they would be playing in the tournament simultaneously. How did I know they were doing that? Because they were talking in Chinese, probably to avoid suspicion, and I overheard. It was an 8 person tourney running every few minutes and the winner got a Mario Kart RC car. Obviously if you have three friends in the same tournament with you, there's a good chance one of the 3 would get first place. After they finished the tournament, they got back in line and repeated over and over. I saw them in line at noon one day; I checked out MK DS and left, then came back near the end of the day and saw that they were still at it. They must have collected a dozen RC cars.

That's not the problem. It's the bastards there who don't even play games. Just for free stuff.

yep, I bet he's able to convince me now that I need a strategy guide to go with it.

As well as an awesome Gamestop-branded additional controller.

Wow, first babes, now this. I might be tempted into going to E3 yet again, then. Last year sucked due to the crazy amount of people, who apparently go there only to annoy the *real* media crowd. Great news.

This is absolutely fantastic news.

Less people at E3 is desperately needed.

That the cut people are gamestore clerks is just icing on the cake.

The media pass requirements are pretty strict this year.

E3 Media FAQ said:
To qualify as online media, provide:

* A copy of your driver’s license or government issued photo identification clearly showing your name and date of birth (no one under 18 will be admitted), AND
* A copy of your business card with name, editorial title and media outlet's logo, AND
* A PRINTED copy of your online publication with your name and title appearing in an editorial capacity, including a bylined interactive entertainment industry-related article from your publication written by you and published within the last six months (the copy must clearly show the name of the publication and your byline), AND

That looks the same as last year...

Well, the point is most "little fan websites" don't have any kind of tax ID, how high the E3 reg folks actually set the bar in terms of site quality and site relevance is anyone's guess, although both are pretty subjective.

I honestly suspect that register jockeys at the expo are a much bigger issue, though.

As he said, its the same as last year. People that want to get into E3 will get in regardless. They've been really lax year after year and every year there's a thread like this one. It simply remains to be seen if there are any major changes this year but I doubt so. :lol

thats just for media registration, most of the people we complain about are the best buy/EB/gamestop people who attend in large quantaties. I dont know what their requirements are to get admitted though.

BTW, this isn't exclusive to gamestore employees. Employees that work at stores like TRU, BB, Frys and whatnot are also excluded from attending.

This will be one interesting year. With no more store clerks or nearly naked booth skanks, I wonder if there'll be a noticable decline in attendance.
