No showing of PS3 before E3?

But SCEE this morning has officially played down the talk.

"We've already said that the first showing of the next generation PlayStation will be at E3 this year," said a spokesperson.
"What I can say is that I'm not going to Japan next week," said a very senior PlayStation development source, speaking off the record to GamesIndustry.biz. "I would be cautious about running that story."
"Why would we want to confuse the message about PSP with a product that's not coming out until 2006?" a SCEE source added.

Sometimes I wonder if SCEA, SCEE and SCEI communicate at all, given the earlier talk about a certain unveiling before E3, in march.

Did they?

Even if they did, they also already said the first showing will take place in March, so they'll have to forgive us if we don't believe them outright.

if true, SCEI seems to be backing out of its PS3 Premier event that was supposed to take place *before* E3. well, that's fine. gives them a couple extra months to decide what PS3's spec will be ? I don't know, too many things to think about.

Gonna be a HELLUVA E3 this year.... I predict this forum will not make it through E3.

Yes I also agree. Is there a reason to keep an archive of 500 pages? The old forum with only 20 pages was better.

But that would mean that posts only two hours old will be off the archive...

Its a clever move. If they were going to show the PS3 now, then MS and Nintendo could have adjusted their specs. If they did show it now however, most of the gaming world would have been all over it and it would get a lot of attention since nothing this big would be around, but at E3, there are going to be two or more consoles being shown their at nearly the same time, so their might be less buzz.

I hope this news didn't come from a senior source at NewsCorp or Eidos.

I think they're trying to smother talk of PS3 at GDC and somehow the message got confused. SCE has been fairly consistent thusfar in saying that PS3 will first be unveiled before E3, probably March. Although we do have that talk that the March presentation will be more cell-centric that PS3 also..

March 1999: The final spec of EE & GS in the PS2, and visual demos
September 1999: The official name ("PlayStation2 PS2"), DVD support, controller, case design, and games

So you won't see the actual PS3 until at least E3, that's for sure.

No one's really expecting that, but a premiere event ala the PS2's "A Glimpse of the Future" should be forthcoming.

doesn't contradict an event like PlayStation Meeting 1999 (Mar. 1999).

I guess that's one interpretation, sure. Although I'd be a little surprised if we saw the final hardware design so early. I just hope we get more info this month! :)

I think people are making a mistake when they're looking for an event at which to premiere it.

I'd be very surprised if they unveiled it at an event where there is a whole lot of other stuff to "steal the thunder".

It's much more likely they'll just have a separate press conference/event.

As for those comments from SCEE "spokespersons", I don't trust it at all. Kaz Hirai said that it'd be in March as late as CES, Kutaragi said March in July, and these anonymous spokespersons don't hold a candle to those in terms of credibility.

Hell, even Chris Deering, CEO of SCEE has made some pretty darn stupid comments.

I'm still expecting a Playstation Meeting 2005 style event in the last week of March.

UK sources urge caution on imminent 'PS3 unveiling'
by Patrick Garratt

Rumour that Sony is to make a major announcement in Japan next week has arisen from Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, coupled with the inevitable leap of logic that PlayStation 3 is about to be shown.

A senior source close to Sony privately let slip today at the GDC that senior staffers from SCEE are to make the trip to Tokyo next week to "the PlayStation 3 unveiling".

Further chatter has emerged from developers at the event that "something" is occurring with PlayStation 3 in Japan next week, although they've fallen short of claiming the console is about to be shown for the first time.

But SCEE this morning has officially played down the talk.

"We've already said that the first showing of the next generation PlayStation will be at E3 this year," said a spokesperson.

The view that E3 will indeed house the first showing of the machine has been corroborated within the industry today.

"What I can say is that I'm not going to Japan next week," said a very senior PlayStation development source, speaking off the record to GamesIndustry.biz. "I would be cautious about running that story."

Talk has been doing the rounds in the UK for some time that Sony would announce PlayStation 3 - or "next generation PlayStation," as Sony currently goes to great lengths to call the machine - at an event in Japan before E3. PlayStation 2 was announced in this way in late 1999, just before Tokyo Game Show.

But a pre-E3 showing of the machine seems unlikely now, given the comments made by SCEE and senior sources today, and the fact Sony is about to roll out PSP in America and Canada - now confirmed as March 24 - and Europe at a later, unconfirmed date.

"Why would we want to confuse the message about PSP with a product that's not coming out until 2006?" a SCEE source added.

it makes sense. I feel that Sony announced the 'next-generation' Playstation technology too early, in march 1999, about a year and a half before U.S. release. it was no doubt in response to the ground-well of support for the newly released Dreamcast in Japan.

Sony could have an 'PS3 event' in Japan just days before E3, in May, while nearly simultaneously showing it at E3 in the U.S. a few days later. this way, Micrsosoft will probably not be able to adjust Xenon spec after learning what PS3 spec is.
