And, yes, I know you all want to know about THE WINDS OF WINTER too. I've seen some truly weird reports about WOW on the internet of late, by 'journalists' who make their stories up out of whole cloth. I don't know which story is more absurd, the one that says the book is finished and I've been sitting on it for some nefarious reason, or the one that says I have no pages. Both 'reports' are equally false and equally moronic. I am still working on it, I am still months away (how many? good question), I still have good days and bad days, and that's all I care to say. Whether WINDS or the first volume of FIRE AND BLOOD will be the first to hit the bookstores is hard to say at this juncture, but I do think you will have a Westeros book from me in 2018... and who knows, maybe two. A boy can dream...

The other Westeros book is a history of the Targaryens:

Speaking of fake history... regulars here may recall our plan to assemble an entire book of my fake histories of the Targaryen kings, a volume we called (in jest) the GRRMarillion or (more seriously) FIRE AND BLOOD. We have so much material that it's been decided to publish the book in two volumes. The first of those will cover the history of Westeros from Aegon's Conquest up to and through the regency of the boy king Aegon III (the Dragonbane). That one is largely written, and will include (for the first time) a complete detailed history of the Targaryen civil war, the Dance of the Dragons.

At this point I'm just waiting for them all to be finished before reading the whole series in one go. Worked for The Dark Tower. That way if Martin dies first it won't hurt as bad.

It's impossible to measure but I wonder how much interest The Winds of Winter has dipped now that the show has surpassed its timeline. I know I, for one, care much less. As in, I don't really care at all anymore.

Not really a surprise. I'm sure he actually has more fun writing fake history than trying to tie up all his plot threads.

Boy, I wonder if there will new kinds of posts and insights in this thread instead of the same complaining we get every other time GRRM is mentioned.

Lets find out.

In the meantime, the Book of Swords anthology sounds badass. I can't wait for that.

May be I should just give up on waiting and start watching the show again. I stopped a couple of seasons ago when they started going off book.

I cared until I realized I'm going to have to re-read all five books again to unlearn the TV show.

Reading his post, the title of the OP seems inaccurate. Seems "Maaaaaybe late 2018, probably 2019" since he cant say whether Fire and Blood or Winds will hit first, and Fire and Blood is late 2018, early 2019.

I don't even care at this point I already have a general idea of what happens from the show and if it ends like I think it will I'll throw my books in the toilet.

I remember in 2014, I was discussing this with my brother, and I said "It's not gonna come out anytime soon, probably 2017 or something" like it was some far away time. Ahh, that innocence.

Because it rarely is just old news. GRRM always tries to coincide his "I got nothing to say on Winds" posts with new stuff. In this case, Fire and Blood and the new anthology book The Book of Swords. But that stuff is always ignored in favor of more whining.

He probably shouldn't bring up his main series then, if all he's really writing is his procrastination projects.
