NOM 151 - Miyamoto, DS, IM programs, third pillar

Miyamoto said:
"The DS may look like a Game Boy but, in reality, it's Nintendo's third pillar. What we mean by this is that the DS will allow us to create software that we haven't been able to produce on any Game Boy before, or even the Gamecube. It's going to have software that's never been seen before on any system."

Miyamoto said:
"Well, our target user is everyone: people aged from 5 to 95. And if you look at that wide user base, you have children who see their parents with PDAs and so on. So there's a lot of appeal for kids to use the DS and the stylus for its chat capabilities.
And it's possible for someone with a wireless router in their home to potentially link up the Nintendo DS to that router, their computer and the Internet, and then to potentially link up to other instant messenging programs."

NOM admit they don't know much outside of what Miyamoto has helped to fuel here, and they simply say they'd expect news to come around E3 time. They are interesting words given the DS=PDA and DS-online-imminent rumors.

By the way a few European launch titles get a right scathing: Ping Pals and Sprung being the worst. The latter "is only getting above zero percent because the dialogue is occasionally funny". Oh dear.

Rayman gets 70% - "The analogue control is better than Mario" but "The dual screens are awash with brown and the whole thing suffers from pretty horrendous slow down". Good to see they're not polishing the turds.

It's wrapped up in packaging because it comes with a DVD. Underneath all that, there's no clutter on the cover. Just "Nintendo DS launch Collectors Edition", the NOM logo, a DS playing Hunters on it with Samus standing on top of the machine. The Nintendo DS logo and "Touch Me" slogan at the bottom.

The hardware overview is great but their graphics comments made me laugh: better than N64 almost outdoing Gamecube? I think not. They give good examples of improvement to look for in Mario though.

There are some comments from people at the recent Touch Me tour, all positive of course. Actually when they mentioned the Internet stuff they said turn to page 74 to learn about possible future applications including Internet apps, a camera and so forth, then didn't mention the camera :\

Every launch game is reviewed, and the summary boxes are done using Pictochat. The ping pals one just has "POINTLESS" scrawled in it really heavily :lol

It's an alright issue, but there's no Quill letters section and things like that for example. Nothing of interest on the other console fronts.

Well, our target user is everyone: people aged 95.

The interview NOM are using was from last years NDS E3 roundtable.

Question: With the DS' chat and instant message capabilities, are you competing with mobile phones? What direction are you going with this?

Miyamoto: I think there are two ways of looking at it. Our target user is everyone: people age 5 to 95. And if you look at that wide user base, you have children who see their parents with PDAs and such. So there's a lot of appeal for kids to use the DS and the stylus for its chat and IMing. And it's possible for someone with a wireless router in their home to potentially link up the Nintendo DS to that router, the computer and the internet and then to potentially link up to other instant messenging programs. I don't know how Microsoft will see this or if anyone will put anything out for this, or we may put something out independent as well. But maybe since Microsoft isn't making any cellphones maybe we'll be fine. (laughs).

I guess Nintendo had decided to turn the thing into a PDA device 7 months prior to launch, those evil b'stards. :P

NOM has to use a seven month old round table for it's DS launch interview?
That is astounding! What's going on?

Perhaps it's proof Miyamoto is dead and has been replaced by a bot?

hav'nt you realised what applications this has for gaming, this is a show of internet connectivity,

once nintendo get a live game service up and running, this can be one way we will be able to get our handhelds online at home, and outside at hotspots- where a online DS service should be available....
