Ok, I'm fairly new to this PC building scene, I think I've done enough research to build one though.

But since you guys are probably more experienced at this than I am, does this PC look good and should everything work with each other? Thanks in advance

Am I to assume that with that much money you would be fine building yet another computer in six months? Because that's what you're going to want to do.

I'd say just wait. At least wait for Conroe, if not waiting until DX10 cards to come out.

Nah, not too interested in Conroe, since AM2 just came out, I'll be sticking with AMD, and about the video card, I thought about it and once the DX10 cards come out, I'll upgrade, that's why I decided against the 7900 GTX

Go with a:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4500+ Dual Core Processor Socket AM2 Windsor 2.2GHZ 2X1MB 89W 90NM Retail Box

Also, get a 500w or better power supply.

Worth the extra money.

Why are you getting a cd-rom drive?

I was thinking about it, but that would put the price over 2k, I think that would be better spent on a monitor, which I desperately need.

Why are you getting a cd-rom drive?

Mainly so I can burn a CD directly from the drive and so I can play games and stuff while i'm burning cds/dvds

AMD X2 chips will be price cut by literally 50% in about 5 or 6 weeks I found out a few days after I just bought mine hehe. oh well.

I just built a similar machine to what you have listed.

Asus a8n32 sli deluxe mobo
corsair 2gb pc3200 ram
athlon 64 X2 3800+
enermax 500w modular psu
coolermaster praetorian aluminum case
2x seagate 300gb sata drives
evga gforce 7900GT
nec 3520 dvd r/w

all that came to a little under $1600 from Newegg, with a few mail in rebates.
works like a dream. been playing HL2 and Dawn of War with all setting maxed (other than keeping aa and af at reasonable levels) 60fps+ :) :) :) I will probly try overclocking the 3800 soon.

the only thing I am thinking about adding is a soundcard. The onboard sound on the asus mobo is noticeably worse than my previous Abit mobo.

just re-read your post. I may be wrong here as I am not so up to date but I think the ram you listed is gonna be problematic. I think for socket 939 chips all you can use is DDR400. not ddr2.

I think you want lower numbers in the timings also. the corsair I got is like 2, 2, 2.5, 3 or something

IIRC the X2s only support DDR, so no point in getting those 2 ram chips, go for a 400, PC 3200 dual channel set instead. save the cash.
great setup though, similar to mine, except i got a shitty video card on purpose since i only play mame.

It would be a problem if I was buying a s939 mobo, but I'm buying an AM2 mobo, so the only choice I have is DDR2 ram

Nope, it supports DDR2

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=18458&vpn=ADA4200CUBOX&manufacture=AMD

Socket AM2 processors from AMD will support DDR2 speeds of 400MHz, 533MHz, 667MHz and, for AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 dual-core and AMD Athlon™ 64 FX dual-core processors, 800MHz.

Hmm, maybe you should consider getting a dvd-rom drive instead, since pc games are starting to come on dvd more often.

Why the floppy drive if you're getting the DVD-RW/CD-RW???

Floppy drives makes things easier and a whole lot safer when updating the bios and firmwares on various pieces of hardware. Some manufacturers don't even give you the option to do that shit without a floppy drive.

Hmmm, this is kinda putting some questions in my mind about somethings, is the DVD burner able to play DVD ROM?

*cough*WAIT FOR CONROE YOU WON'T REGRET IT*cough*

And it's true, it never hurts to have a floppy drive. They're ridiculously cheap and they don't interfere with anything at all. I rarely use mine except for when I absolutely have to.

Wait for Conroe since AMD will cut prices.

DON'T wait for DX10, that's the weirdest advice ever :lol The 1st generation of DX10-capable cards will not be able to run any DX10 game at a decent speed with full settings.

Is there any reason you are getting a SLI mobo and only one video card? Are you planning to add a 2nd one later?

Logisys CS-51WBK 51W Black 450W ATX Tower Case 4X5.25 2X3.5 5X3.5INT W/ Window
Your case already seems to already include a PSU, why are you getting an additional (and weaker) one?

Don't bump the CPU from 4200 to 4500--the increase is minimal and not noticeable in any real-life app. I.e. 20fps versus 22fps does not make a diff., and neither does 95 vs. 100 :) Instead, invest in a top-quality power supply (like Enermax).

No soundcard?

What are you basing this on? The Radeon 9700 was more than capable to run dx9 games when it came out. The 1st generation of dx10 cards will easily be able to run the first generation of dx10 games very good, othewise they would piss off a lot of people.

GSG, may I also suggest ditching the CD-ROM drive and getting a DVD-ROM drive instead? It never hurts to have two DVD readers in your system. Especially if you backup a lot of movies. Make sure it's a lite-on. I don't like their dvd writers (I use NEC), but as far as reading data goes, if a lite-on can't read a damaged disc, NOTHING can. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827106028

Your DVD writer seems fine, BenQ are among the best (along with NEC and Pioneer, and of course Plextor).

Well, if I did wait for conroe, I would have to order my PC in July but I won't have any time to assemble it until atleast late august and with my family that's unacceptable :).

And yeah, I'm only getting one card for now, it's already so expensive with one, plus the SLI was just a bonus for me, the real reason I got this was the integrated wifi in the mobo (even though it doesn't say it on the name, it's there)

Oh and the PSU that comes with the case is apparently really bad (it was a $50 case after all), that's the only reason why I'm getting another. I might keep the one with the case as backup.

And soundcard will come later as well with the rest of the accessories, I'm sticking with the mobo sound for now

Yeah, no issue there.

Phew, thanks, I was getting bit worried there. And the CD drive I got only costed me about $20, so it wasn't that big of a hit on my budget :)

That's actually a really good idea, I might ask the place I ordered from if I can exchange it and pay the difference.

so who here has a nice rig currently but will still upgrade to conroe? Is it really worth it at this point? I just got this rig 3 months ago, having known nothing about conroe, and it was an impulse thing..a little pissed now, but what I have is pretty good for my needs, since I'm not a PC gamer.

not true. you can pretty much burn what is on a floppy to boot on a CD. Asus allows bios flashing in windows.

get this PSU

With AMD, you might wanna go with Crucial memory instead of Corsair.

Corsair's advertised timings are for Intel systems and when coupled with AMD they default to slower timings.

Conroe ftw.

When I build my new PC in the next year or so it will probably be Conroe, unless AMD has a better alternative for the same price
