Now You're Playing With Logic Puzzles!

All this Psychonauts stuff made me remember a page I wrote for Nintendo Official Magazine UK a while back. It was logic puzzles featuring Mario characters. As it turned out, they only had space to run the first puzzle (read the second and you'll probably see why), so I figured I'd post them both here for you puzzle fans.

Note: I know these are not especially difficult. Remember that the magazine's readership skews young.

Note #2: Don't be a jackass and post the answers; it's not a competition and you don't win anything. I'll put them up in a while if people want to check their results against mine.

Now You're Playing With Logic

Are you ready for some serious brain activity, Nintendo fans? The Mario crew have gotten themselves into some heaps of trouble, but this time you won't be able to jump or race your way out of it! You've got to use logic to solve these puzzles. Maybe you're really smart and can do both of these while standing on your head – but if you have trouble with the first one, don't even bother with the second! Can you figure it all out?

Enemy Evasion!

"Your Highness, it's awful!" said Toadette as she arrived at the palace steps, completely out of breath. "Everyone's in big trouble! I was walking back from gathering Super Mushrooms with Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, and Yoshi when we were attacked by Morton Koopa, Jr! I barely escaped!"

"Wow, Toadette," said Princess Daisy, "you sure are completely useless. I wonder if they're going to be okay?"

"I don't know," said Toadette. "He had four friends with him – a Pirana Plant, a Little Goomba, a Yellow Koopa Troopa, and a Tweeter! As I was running away I got a good look at the fighting. Everybody had paired off for one-on-one fighting. I think I remember hearing Toad yell out, 'It's mushroom versus mushroom!' so he must have been fighting the Little Goomba. He's so brave."

"For a mushroom, yes. Do you remember anything else?"

"Yes! Peach definitely didn't tangle with either the Tweeter or the Yellow Koopa. Oh, and neither Mario or Yoshi was fighting the Pirana Plant. Yoshi couldn't do anything against them anyway."

"Toadette, this doesn't help me figure out who was fighting who."

"I'm sorry, Your Highness! I'm sure I can remember something else if I try… oh, wait! I remember noticing as I ran away… it was kind of funny actually, but nobody was fighting an enemy with the same first letter of their name!"

"Hmmmm," said Princess Daisy. "You know, Toadette, I'm surprised. You're not completely useless after all. I think I've figured out who fought who, and I bet they'll be just fine. In fact, I think I see them coming up the walk right now, and they don't look too happy with you…"

Can you figure out which hero fought which enemy?

Lunchtime Logic!

"They're coming up the walk right now!" announced Princess Daisy. "The heroes have returned from collecting Super Mushrooms and fighting Morton Koopa Jr. and his evil crew! Prepare the dining room tables and set out their luncheon!"

Suddenly, the kitchen door burst open with a loud bang. "I AM RUINED!" shouted the royal chef, a tall, slightly French-looking mushroom.

"Jesus Christ," said Daisy. "What is it this time?"

"Some IMBECILE threw out all of my notes," said the chef, looking furiously at a terrified young assistant. "Now I have no idea what the heroes have asked for for lunch! I barely had time to look at the food and drink requests and I remember nearly nothing!"

"Get a grip, Chef," said Daisy. "What do you remember?"

"Well, I'd laid out all the day's food and drink. There's manicotti, pork chops, tacos, lasagna, and for some reason somebody just wanted yogurt. To drink, they asked for tea, lemonade, yellow kool-aid, pomegranate juice, and milk. One thing that I know, as the royal chef, is that Toad and Yoshi are severely lactose intolerant! So that rules some possibilities out."

"Hmmm," said Daisy. "This is a real head-scratcher. Well, one thing's for sure – the Mario brothers definitely ate Italian food. In fact, I've never seen them eat anything without tomato sauce smothered on it. I think they had cake with tomato sauce once."

"Ah yes," said the chef. "But one thing Luigi stays away from is any drink colored yellow. In fact, Yoshi's the same way. I think it's some childhood fear they have. Maybe Mario used to make them eat yellow snow when they were kids. And Chain Chomp urine tastes awful."

"How do you know?" asked Daisy.

The chef was unable to speak.

"Well, that's sick," said Daisy. "But we can't solve this puzzle yet, and they're almost here!"

"I… think I know something!" said the tiny assistant, who suddenly seemed to regain his confidence after the chef's humiliation.

"Wait, let me guess," said Daisy. "Nobody's food or drink began with the same letter as their first name?"

"Yes," said the assistant. "But not only that – nobody's food began with the same letter as their drink!"

"Brilliant," said Daisy. "Now I know exactly who ate and drank what. Help me set these plates out… our new head chef! And you, pee-drinker – don't let the drawbridge hit you on the ass on the way out, you sicko."

Who ate and drank what at lunch?

Oops... I realized I was being a jackass by posting my answers... I figured out #2 as well.

That was pretty fun. :D

Considering the target audience and how closely they tie in with the material and characters I think these puzzles are quite excellent. Definitely a good job Kobun.

I'm going to e-mail these to my girlfriend's niece and nephew to see what they think of it.
