Nvidia Releases GeForce Now App for the Steam Deck

jshackles

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

The app is now available, and gamers can stream titles on the Steam Deck at up to 4K 60 frames per second — connected to a TV — with HDR10, NVIDIA DLSS 4 and Reflex technologies on supported titles. Plus, members can run these games at settings and performance levels that aren't possible natively on the Steam Deck. To top it off, Steam Deck users can enjoy up to 50% longer battery life when streaming from an RTX gaming rig in the cloud.

This is very interesting for playing the latest graphically intensive games that the SD can't really handle. 60fps with ultra high end settings. No installation or messing around with settings.

You do have to buy the games. So they stay in your library for the future which is nice. And if you buy them in a Steam sale you can easily get the costs of the streaming service back.

Wouldn't mind playing Cyberpunk, FF7 Rebirth and Stellar Blade this way.

Sadly most of those games are not in the service

Is there a comprehensive list of games that are available on GeForce Now?

Never mind. I found it. Pretty good list of games. Might try this out. xCloud blows.

I've only heard good things about gfn. Don't have any reason to try it other than curiosity.

Looks like there's a free tier. I can use that to check it out. I find the streaming services pretty interesting. Got stadia for my dad because he was interested in playing games and it was actually pretty good for the situation. I had already set him up with a chromecast anyway because he was watching so much youtube on his phone. They games play and look great.

I hate the idea of a future where we get stuck with streaming-only for a number of games, but I'd live.

I'm more interested if Nvidia puts it on Switch 2, either way any cloud device over wifi is meh. Geforce Now though over ethernet, perfection.

geforce now is really the best but native is still way better. id take the hit on performance. iv tried on mobile 5g connections and it sucks.

I'm curious what results you get. I did Alan wake 2 on my gaming rig through this app and then tried on my 3080. GeForce blew it out of the water visually and performance wise. Truly amazing tech!

This is great, and kind of brings PC Game Pass to the Steam Deck in an easier fashion for subscribers. I gave my Steam Deck away and got an Ally X for Game Pass and GFN, but if they release Steam Deck 2 I'll definitely be paying attention. I love GFN, it's probably the way I play the most now, even on PCs capable of running natively. Excited to see what the next 12 - 18 months brings. Hopefully Microsoft bring a better OS for gaming.

Shit when path tracing path drops next month for dark ages I may pay just to try it on deck and my PC. Great title to test this with,

Can this be tested for free?
Yes. They have a free tier, but honestly in most cases you're probably better off just running the games natively on the Steam Deck, if you're able to. The free tier is limited to one-hour sessions, long wait times (sometimes 40+ minutes to start a game at peak times), and only their "basic rig" that has no RTX and a high-end GPU.

But if you want to test it out before subscribing to see how the latency is, it's an option. They also have a "day pass" you can get for a non-recurring $4 to try it out for a day without the limitations.

Doubt I'll ever use it, but glad to see more of their services hit Linux.

Now if they could bring over Nvidia Broadcast to Linux, I'd be psyched.

Yes, most (if not all) PC Game Pass games seem to be on GFN. Could be wrong about the percentage, but never found one missing yet.
Yeah I believe Microsoft and Nvidia have some sort of collaboration for PC Gamepass, they probably know that xcloud ain't good enough for PC gamers by being based on Xbox.

Yeah, I am not a cloud gamer, but for funsies was gonna just see what its like on the Deck.

A little off topic but I'm curious about steamdeck. I game mostly on GFN but want a steamdeck for the games not on GFN. How does steamdeck handle being docked to the tv. Can I basically play all the games on my tv no problem with my controller?

My biggest problem with Geforce Now is the price: $100 or $200 a year to stream games that you also have to buy seems like a waste of money. A Gamepass Ultimate sub would be a better value, or just saving up for a better GPU.

Yes. You buy a separate adapter. I think they have an official one now but I got a 3rd party one before they were available that works just fine.

you just connect the Steam Deck into a usb adapter or a dock, and then connect the adapter/dock to the tv and the power outlet. 45W is enough for high end gaming on the Steam Deck while charging it

Then just connect the standard controller to the Steam Deck (wired to the adapter/dock, or wireless bluetooth etc)

Free tier isn't really representative of the service sadly you will probably get a bad impression of it. You need ultimate but maybe free will show you that the connection is ok

Damn well that's sucks. Guess I'll have to buy a month if I'm ever that curious.
They also sell "day passes" for a couple of bucks to try out the higher tier for 24 hours.
