Nvidia's NV50 canned

New things to come

By Fuad Abazovic: Friday 03 December 2004, 13:57
WE ARE told that Nvidia's next gen chip NV50 has been canned as well as the NV48 chip we reported on earlier in the week. I guess both were not fitting well into Nvidia's picture.

We don’t have any idea as yet what lead to such a decision, but Nvidia does apparently think it's now time to make its next breakthrough chip.

All we know is that Nvidia made a huge u-turn or a right turn in its roadmap as Intel describes it, and we don’t yet know where that leads.

We also know that Nvidia is very dedicated to win the graphic fight and to move away from the deadly embrace with ATI. In the current generation, it's not important what you get as both Nvidia and ATI cards are performing almost identically.

Nvidia still strongly believes that SLI is something that will become very important in the future. µ

Inquirer HAS been wrong before, but they're not that bad, like Spong is. could it be true?

I suppose NV50 might end up like R400 did. the NV50 tech that was good will be moved to NV55 or NV60, or whatever.

hmmmm.

Maybe Nvidia is working with Sony afterall?

Nvidia CELL PC GPU? naaaaa

what seems clear, is that Nvidia will push SLI with NV4X for the forseeable future.

??

This might be erroneous, while I'm graphic card agnostic I would like to see some heavy competition in the sector to keep things interesting and hopefully cheaper.

Maybe this is an extremely wise move on Nvidia's part.

Considering that it doesn't look like Sony is going to contract with Nvidia, they really need to do something special to differentiate themselves from ATI. Simply competing with ATI like they have been won't cut it, especially with ATI getting additional revenue from Revolution and Xbox 2.

I think this is almost make-it-or-break-it time for Nvidia. They're still profitable, but if they don't get something awesome for the next gen PC cards, they're out of the game.

I don't keep up with this stuff at all. Was this the chip/card that was supposed to be able to run in SLI mode? And now it's just completely gone kaput?

I donno about that. The 6xxx line of cards is great, (the 5xxx were awful), and ATI now seems to be the ones slightly behind the curve. Look at the clock speed of Ati's latest chips. They are pretty damn high for parts that barely outpace Nvidia's on some games.

I think they have a little wiggle room.

Oh BTW I'm an owner of a 9800 so don't give me crap for being an Nvidia fanboy.

6600GT can allready run in SLI mode.

So what about the next gen GPU they were supposed to introduce in spring 2005?

you mean from Nvidia? what next gen GPU was due from Nvidia in the spring 05?

certainly not NV50. because NV50 wasnt supposed to be out until late 05 at the very soonest. and probably, not until spring 06.

I've read that nVidia and Ati were both supopsed to unveil their next gen GPU in spring 2005.Maybe it's NV45?
6800 series is NV40?

ok, NV45 would be a refresh, a souped up NV40. I suppose Nvidia could call it 'next gen' being that they are known for lying, cheating, hyping, etc :D

SLI is completely retarded. Unless they let you do it with 2 $100 cards that gets better performance than a $200 card, fuck that. No one has $800 to spend on 2 $400 cards.

I think it's good to have a longer production cycle and then release something that does not need a supersonic turbine for cooling and still is hot like a lavapit. They need to make the chip fast AND cool AND silent AND not too expensive. That takes some time. I never ever want to see a nividia chip/card like that GeForceFX 5800 Ultra (aka leafblower)

Maybe they will use SLI on the same board.
3dfx had a multichip solution on the same board with their last Voodoo series.
