read that earlier today... and the way I see it, if there is a "fierce battle" there will be mild success for both formats (not even close to VHS or DVD, but better than SACD and DVD-A), perhaps on the level of Laser Disc in a couple of years...
what I can possibly see happening is manufactors making players that can read both formats (maybe not Sony or Toshiba, but maybe like Sanyo and Samsung)...
Sure the majority of people aren't gonna give up regular DVD anytime soon, but I see a place for these players because of the rising rates of adoption for HDTV, the forced standards coming from the governments on the sale of HD-compatible TV's and network content...
everybody was happy with CD because nobody really had the equipment or really cared about improving the level of music listening to the same extent that is happening with video...
a huge success, probably not... but if the prices ever get cheap enough and both sides stick to their guns, then I think someone will eventually come up with a player that can read and write both, kind of how the CD and DVD -/+/r/rw drives eventually just did everything to make it easy on casual customers...
