"Clearly, this is just evidence that Trump has done nothing wrong. It's all Jr's fault, and every previous shady thing was just Jr doing it and not signing "Jr' at the end so we have all been wrongly accusing Trump senior."

That's exactly what I'm thinking will happen (if it exists).

Putin will keep it until he thinks he has exhausted all whatever leverage he could get out of his pupet, then he'll release it for the pleasure of embarassing a sitting US president on the global stage.

Nah. Just another piece of evidence and a path to follow. Slow and steady. And at the risk of sounding like a skipping record...the fed doesn't move until they have you dead to rights. This is quickly approaching that.

I was going to say: Jared could always pretend that he didn't really know what the meeting would be about, but it looks like Don Jr. forwarded him the email chain before it took place. Oh well, he'll just say that he didn't read it.

Still probably the next person to go down.

There's something just plain weird about this whole thing...

It started with 3 people in the whitehouse leaking. Then we have this lawyer, who works for the Russian government, coming out and happily saying that she tried to give Clinton info to Trump Jr for various embargoes to be lifted... and that not only was Trump interested, but he was "desperate for it". Why is she being so forthcoming? This is obviously the Russian government telling her to disclose this stuff... why are they doing this?

And now Don Jr releases his emails that show he was directly colluding with the Russians.

What is going on??

So here is my guess as to how this whole thing went down.

Manafort was the one who setup this deal with Russia. They would collude with the Trump campaign to try and bring down Hillary through hacked DNC and Podesta emails. They would also use disinformation (read: literal "fake news") and large social media botnets to influence the US electorate. In return, they get the easing of sanctions, dissolution of NATO, changed stance on Crimea, etc. etc. etc.

With the deal in place, Manafort then brings Kushner in as a co-conspirator with Russia. Manafort and Kushner become known as the main Russian points-of-contact within the Trump campaign. Don Jr. knows about this, of course, but likely isn't involved with most of the high level communications going on.

Until he receives this email. These contacts are one Don Jr. has known from the Miss Universe Pageant and are likely outside of the already-established Russia-Trump communications. He excitedly thinks he has something big here and makes sure to loop in Manafort and Kushner.

(You will note that the email refers to the "Russian goverment's support for Mr. Trump" and it is stated as a known thing and one that Don Jr is not at all surprised by. This is a very strong implication that the Russia-Trump connection has already been established and is well-known amongst campaign officials.)

The meeting being outside of the usual communication channel is likely why we even know about it. My read on Manafort and Kushner is that they are smart enough to know not to coordinate potentially illegal meetings via email. But Don Jr. clearly is not. And now his clumsy attempt at trying to setup a secret meeting of collusion could threaten to blow this whole thing wide open (well, more wide open than it already has been, anyway).

A someone who thinks a lot of the past smoking guns have been "nothing" (I think they're all 100% guilty but that nothing would stick to them), this is definitely "something".

A senior campaign figure setting up a meeting for intelligence obtained by the Russian government to try and help swing the election.

The really mind-boggling thing is Trump Jr tweeting it himself. Now, every news story isn't going to start with "The NYTimes is reporting that...", it's going to be starting with "Donald Trump Jr confirmed...". Why? All just to spite the NYT from getting an exclusive? How is this "getting in front of" the story?
