DOHUK, Iraq — American military forces bombed at least two targets in northern Iraq on Thursday night to rout Islamist insurgents who have trapped tens of thousands of religious minorities in Kurdish areas, Kurdish officials said.

Here we go.

Edit: it seems the Pentagon press secretary is currently denying US involvement over twitter. Reports of air strikes seem to be certain though, and Kurdish officials didn't even leave open the thought it could be a group other than the US. Is the US trying to keep this hush hush? Is this Iran or Syria? Further clarification still needed.

Pretty much all of my family have some connection to Dohuk. Never thought what was once such a small village would be this important.

There are mixed reports.

Rear Adm. John Kirby ‏@PentagonPresSec 16m
Press reports that US has conducted airstrikes in Iraq completely false. No such action taken.

Couldn't the US just deploy a few drones to bomb the shit out of the ISIS in the area? No American lives have to be put in danger.

This is the perfect opportunity to attack ISIS without getting involved in the political strife, I hope we are ready to do what we can without sending in ground troops.

I said this in the other thread... I'm not sure how to feel about this. On one hand I want to help the innocent people. One the other... I know full well that every time the US gets involved in the ME things just get worse.

This time I am actually in for the war. ISIS is dangerous by itself, but the more pressing issue of 40,000 people that get's starved in a siege of hatred really disturbs me.

Completely approve of this. These innocent people who are being slaughtered need help and no one has stepped up to do a fucking thing until now. ISIS needs to be stopped and if it needs to be the US then so be it. Fuck that sickening regime. I hope they are completely wiped out ASAP

Endless war...

Here's a little context.

President Obama is considering airstrikes or airdrops of food and medicine to address a humanitarian crisis among as many as 40,000 members of religious minorities in Iraq, who have been dying of heat and thirst on a mountaintop where they took shelter after death threats from the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, administration officials said on Thursday.

Maybe you still disagree with the possible strikes but do attempt some critical thinking if you are going to post a response.

Why? Is it our obligation or duty to be world police and save people just because we allegedly can?

Because US foreign policy measures are one of the main reason why Middle-East is descending into chaos and total anarchy. So the United States should take an active role in cleaning up this mess, and if you ask me, rebuilding the infrastructure as well.

I hope it's true. Not every military action is the same. The last time we were in Iraq it was a travesty from top to bottom, but we did a good thing in Libya and we can do a good thing here.

So you want 40,000 innocent people to die? Okay.

Why do you think 40,000 people dying is better than trying to help them?

Are they Americans?

This is the perfect opportunity for the Iraqi government to step the fuck up.

So doesn't that make it our responsibility to try and fix it?

No. Why? How much money do you think it will take to "fix" Iraq? How many more years? How many soldiers have to come back maimed and mentally damaged with PTSD?

How do you think the chances are if we stay another 10 years? Do you think that it's a lock that the Iraqi government won't degrade once again into sectarian divisions?

How many tax raises are you willing to vote for to continue funding this attempt to "fix" Iraq?

I don't "want" them to die, I don't believe we have any obligation to prevent it from happening. The Kurds are already attempting to save the group from what I've read.

It's not the US' job to intervene in every country that has a problem. And while one could argue the root of the problem lies in the US invasion of Iraq, I don't believe that means we must go back and "fix" this. It's not the US' fault that Malaki is a fool.

Because ISIS actually has the capability to harm the west given how many of their members still retain citizenship in other countries. Can't just let them have their own terrirtory to train, plan, god knows what else.

And here is some for you, you pretentious bastard: http://coursesa.matrix.msu.edu/~hst306/documents/indust.html

Still waiting for the critical thinking part.

When has this ever worked out to the benefit of civilians in the Middle East or US foreign policy?

This is a valid point, as long as the US government and electorate takes responsibility for these civilian casualties I am fine with total withdrawal and only working through UN.

What does "taking responsibility" entail other than bourgeois message board shit-flinging?
