Oblivion Achievements' teaser and other Xbox.com Updates

It appears the xbox.com page for Oblivion was just updated with a bunch of different goodies.

First off, there's some brief talk about the achievements here, which appear to be set in stone:

Oblivion's Goals
It's becoming a common theme for games to fully embrace the achievements system with up to fifty goals, and The Elder Scrolls® IV: Oblivion™ is no different. Much like Condemned: Criminal Origins™ or Kameo™: Elements of Power™, Oblivion is fully a single player experience, so you'll find its achievements spaced out between the natural course of the storyline as well as more specific faction goals that not only round out its achievements, but also help push you in new and interesting directions. Here's a comprehensive breakdown of what achievement goals you'll find in Oblivion.

Main Story
Throughout your quest to allay the fears of the doomed emperor Uriel Septim, you'll find yourself passing through various major plot points; many of these will net you an achievement for your trouble. For example:

The first hour or two of the game has you uncovering the basic foundation for the story as you follow (albeit in a roundabout way) the emperor through the network of tunnels and caves underneath the dungeon in which you were held prisoner. After finally making your way outside to freedom, you'll unlock an achievement.
You'll receive another achievement for the first Oblivion Gate you close. Also, though this may be a story point, in true Elder Scrolls fashion, this moment isn't scripted. In fact, you may choose to go your own way the first time an opportunity to close a gate finds you, allowing for this achievement to be unlocked at an entirely different time.

Factions
Much of the side-stories and quests found in the world of Tamriel stem from the various factions you'll find throughout the land. Within each faction (e.g. the Thieves Guild) are different ranks. You'll unlock an achievement for each rank you find yourself promoted to. Not only does this offer much in the way of variety, but you'll find you won't be able to join each faction in one play-through. Therefore, you'll not only find different achievements when you play through as different characters, but also entirely different chains of quests and storylines. The different factions are:

Fighter's Guild
Thieves Guild
Dark Brotherhood (assassins)
Mage Guild

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion offers a unique experience with each character you play with, and you'll find the achievements for Oblivion encourage you to experience as much of the game as you can. You'll find that the reward for each achievement isn't just found in the gamerscore points you acquire, but in the experience of getting them as well.

There's also a new interview. Nothing major, but I found this part quite tasty.

Xbox.com: Anything you'll be able to do with the game on Xbox 360 that just wouldn't be possible anywhere else?

Howard: Hmmm, I guess it's more about the fact that we can do it all and not really have to cut corners. So for instance, in the PC version, depending on your PC, there's a part of it you won't be seeing in all its glory, but on the Xbox 360, you get it all. Please, everyone, buy an HD set ... just please.

Lastly, this is just awesome:

Xbox.com: The absolute coolest part about Oblivion in your opinion would be? And any specific neat touches gamers should look for?

Howard: Poisoned Apples are my new favorite. You get them from the assassin's guild and can slip them into taverns and watch people come to eat and drop dead.

Read the rest here. There's a ton of info about character creation and such there too.

March can't come soon enough! Hopefully the full Achievements list goes up soon.

Most painful game launch wait period ever.

ES4 and it's hot sex can't come soon enough.

Achievements are good reason to get 360 version over other versions of games! :D

I don't compare myself with gamer points, but they are extra goals to accomplish, givng you more motivation to play games. Love 'em. Probably take me over 200 hours to get most of the Oblivion achievements.

God, with GRAW, MGS3: Subsistence, and this coming out in March, my wallet is going to hate me.

Bring on those poisoned apples.

I agree. The wait for this game is killing me inside.

The achievements sound fucking great, though, and now I may actually find a reason to raise up in all the factions (although with less than half of MW's factions, that shouldn't be too hard).

I'm wondering where the Arena Guild love is, though...

Achievements and Leaderboards are killing me. I suddenly found this dormant competitive edge in me...

My buddy: "Hey I got the 75,000 point Time Attack Achievement in Hexic."
Me: O RLY
Him: YA RLY
(4 hours of playing later)
Him: D'you get it?
Me: Go to hell asshole.

God, it's like I'm back in gradeschool or something.

I take it the PC version will be exactly the same but without the achievements (obviously)?

PC version is modifiable, like its predecessor was.

Xbox.com: One of the coolest parts of the game is the hyper-intelligent NPCs. Mind describing a few characters we'll meet and just how smart they are?

Howard: I wish they weren't so smart, actually. We spent forever making them really smart, and probably the last few months making them dumber, because they like to go off and do things that really mess the world up. A few weeks ago there was an instance where a player dropped the "Skull of Corruption," an artifact that when used on an enemy makes an evil clone of that enemy. He was just testing and wanted to make sure the object used the physics correctly when dropped. So he drops it and an NPC runs up, grabs it, and shoots the player with it—creating an evil version of the player who starts killing everyone. It was hilarious.
:lol I can't wait for a bunch of these type of game breakers.

That's awesome. :lol

I can't wait to mess with all the NPCs. From the poison apples to this (even if they cut this specific one) they sound amazing.

What's the phrase Peter Molyneux likes to use? "Emergent gameplay"?

I think Oblivion might be the first game to actually achieve it.

I have a few ideas for achievements aside from the obvious ones like “Thief Guild Leader” and “Completed Main Story.”

Advent of Oblivion:
Player has decided to unleash the scourge of Oblivion upon the world.

World Explorer:
Player has explored at least 95% of the overall map.

Dungeon Master:
Player has explored at least half of 95% of the dungeons.

Weapon Master:
Player has fully mastered all weapon sets.

Master Thief:
Player has successfully completed 200 stealth kills.

Scholar:
Player has read at least 300 books.

Birthsign of the lonely nerd:
Player has played 400 hours.

etc. etc. etc. etc.

With a game like Oblivion you literally have hundreds of achievement possibilities with the ridiculous amount of collectable items, terrain, and monsters in the world. I'd love to see Bethesda take advantage of it and provide acheivements for the mundane and those for incredibly difficult side quests.

Moved all eating implements in the game into your home and lined them up by size, colour and material

Nice new interview over on IGN.

I've never played Morrowind so I don't know if it's already established itself as such, but it looks to me like an RPG GTA. I'm looking forward to the "Show Us Your Character" and "Show Us Your House" threads. And also, you know, playing the ass out of this game.

Daedra Heart Quilt
Player has successfully made a quilt on a bed out of Daedra Hearts.

I did this back in Morrowind in my Hlaalu stronghold :lol I also had shelves lined with one of each of the various helmets in the game, and my downstairs table had one of every sword on it.

The great thing about Oblivion is I don't have to buy anything else that is coming out in March. I'll be so buried in this game I can wait until games like GRAW and BF2 are budget priced....

I'd say I would kill a man to have this game....but I already tried it and it didn't work. Prison time I'll ttyl. :*(

Can someone please speed time up so I can get this game quicker?

"I'm on it!

If this turns out to have the same flaws Morrowind has, I'll :lol at all the bitching and whining that'll take place on these boards. It sounds like they've eliminated most of the problems, but we'll see in a month or so won't we?

It also seems like Bethesda are snubbing thier noses at the PC version a little bit which sucks because that's the version I'll probably get (no 360 for me for the moment, maybe not ever). I hope the PC crowd can mod these achievements and we can implement them into the game... unless they turn out to be really lame of course!

I wonder if the gamer points will be insanely small or else they'll allow like a 2 or 3000 limit.
Eh? There's a 1000 point maximum for all games, 200 points max for Live Arcade titles.

Yeah, the point was whether they'd make an exception in the event of a massive amount of achievements for a game like this. If they stick to the limit, I'm expecting a ton of 5 pt ones.

EDIT: At 5 points each, 200 achievements could be awesome (or just tedious). Guess we'll see :)

Well it's not particularly up to the dev. MS themselves set the "rules" regarding achievement numbers, so yeah... expecting a ton of 5 pointers is a given.

That's what I'm expecting.

Just read the IGN interview. This game sounds so ambitious.

This will be my first Elder Scrolls game I plan on playing through. The scale of the game sounds a little intimidating, but I'm looking forward to seeing what makes this series tick!
