South Korea and US fares much better.

Only 31 percent of Japanese feel an affinity for China, a Mainichi survey shows.

Young people in particular felt strongly anti-Chinese, with more than 70 percent of those in their 20s through 40s saying they didn't like China.

In contrast, 65 percent of the 2,418 respondents had a favorable impression of the United States and 44 percent felt a liking for South Korea.

The Mainichi conducted the survey from Sept. 2 to 4, canvassing 4,550 people from across Japan about their affinity for the U.S., China and South Korea, and receiving 2,418 valid responses.

From Mainichi article:

When it came to China, the impact of anti-Japanese riots on the Asian mainland in April seems to have had an adverse effect on the way Japanese view Chinese. Only 4 percent felt a "strong" affinity for China and just 27 percent said they have "a certain degree" of liking, making a total of a mere 31 percent with a positive outlook toward Japan's massive neighbor. In contrast, combining those who felt "absolutely none" or "very little" affinity toward China reached 68 percent of all respondents. By age, some 59 percent in their 70s, 65 percent of 60-somethings and 69 percent in their 50s had no liking for China. The dislike was even more pronounced among those from their 20s to 40s, topping 70 percent for each age group.

What the hell do they mean by "affinity for China"?

I won't deny the liklihood of the results, but what were the survey standards? The Chinese government? The people? Same for Korea and etc. If someone said they hated the government but the people were fine, where does that slide? Certain degree of liking?

The survey is not very specific, maybe the Japanese article is better written?

I think it's simply a lazy survey. I mean the example of government as supposed to people is valid, and should have been the first thing factored in.

Only because Chinese food actually have a wider palette of taste than just salty or spicy.

I love my thai spicy fried rice too. :D

Is Chinese food in Japan different from the kind from America?

My local Mandarin-style restaurant's owners actually moved from Taiwan to Japan right after WWII when they were kids and owned a restaurant there. Then when Japan refused to grant them residency in the 1970's, they moved to America. It's interesting since their menus are written in Chinese, Japanese and English. I *assume* they've kept their Japan-style Chinese food, although since it's been thirty years, they adapted it for Americans since then.

I like Japanese food better overall, but there are definitely some Chinese dishes that are out of this world. I was in heaven while in Taiwan over the summer :D

Chinese food is better than Japanese food.
I love sushi. But the variety that Chinese cuisine offers is unbeatable...

Anyway, that's too bad about those Nips hating on the Chinks.

I'd take a frickin' truckload of sashimi over chinese food anyday. But I will agree, Chinese food does take the cake in variety. O_O I can't stand MSG though, which is why I prefer homemade Chinese food to restaurants (usually). It doesn't leave a crappy feeling. :P

SO...What was this thread about again? :lol

Chinese food totally owns Japanese food in every category. I'm not talking resturant style Chinese food either, I'm talking home cooking yo.

I guarantee Chinese resentment towards Japanese people is a lot stronger. With regards to food, I love 'em both, but Chinese food does have more variation. Good food is good food though, no matter the country or continent.

As someone who doesn't really eat vegetables, Chinese food is infinitely worse for me than Japanese food. Interesting.

Eating chinese food is like going to McDonalds, Japanese food on the other hand is like dinning in an expensive French restaurant in Paris.

Panda Express = McDonalds?

Sure.

Yoshinoya = Expensive French restaurant in Paris?

Probably, if expensive French restaurants in Paris serve poop.... :lol :lol

Japanese restaurants in general are more expensive than Chinese restaurants. You'll never find a (relatively) inexpensive Japanese restaurant (where a meal for 4 will cost less than $50) but you'll find MANY Chinese restaurants that are inexpensive.

Japanese food seems to have developed out of necessity. Some of the stuff is just plain nasty. If you have to get used to something before it starts tasting good, then something is wrong.

Chinese food is so varied that everyone is bound to find something they like. Besides, the Japanese stole half their food from the Chinese anyway.
